Smoke smell

Be that as it may, and I'm sure you are correct with the facts, no cruise line and no ship has been able to go fully non-smoking.

To me, that says that the cruise lines do in fact need the smokers for the bottom line. Don't you agree? Why else would it still be allowed?

I think cruise lines need non smokers for the bottom line. I don't think they need smokers. Why do you think the smoking areas become more restrictive every year?

Also I don't think a cruise line or ship should go fully non smoking. All inside areas, smoke free casino should be non smoking. Areas should be provided on the outside but not on the balconies as that impinges on an amenity that people pay extra to enjoy.

The cruiselines won't be smoke free until passengers vote with their feet. A few fanatics posting on a forum won't bother them. In the meantime why don't some of you try a land based holiday and see how you get on with "smoke free":)

Pretty good actually. I was in Ireland last year and all the pubs, restaurants, and all the hotels we stayed at were non smoking

To quote multiple posts,

click the middle icon in the lower right corner of a post (where there are " ). It will turn orange. Click the ( " ) for the next post you want to quote and it, too, will turn orange.

Then click "Post Reply" in lower left corner of last post in the thread and your two quoted posts will appear.

You can do about three quotes in one message..... it may vary how many but usually I've found it will handle three at a time.

Thank you!

Soooo, smokers pay the same price as non-smokers for their cruise but we should not be permitted to have a bar or indoor area where we can enjoy a ciggie? As I said earlier, some very selfish people on this forum.

Decision made, it won't be the Rotterdam for Indonesia - I'll be on land (which I prefer anyway).

Aside, why do they sail Indonesia in the rainy season anyway?

I agree will you completely. Another reason cruise ships probably won't go completely smoke free is because it would be near impossible to get crews to work on them. A high percentage of the crew are smokers. I believe the inability to get a sufficient number of crew members was one factor in the demise of Carnival Paradise.

And that reminds me of another reason they should provide some smoking areas. It will be a lot easier to enforce the restrictions if there is some areas for smokers to smoke. If they go completely non smoking they would have passengers sneaking places to smoke. Completely non smoking would likely be a headache to enforce when 20 per cent of the population still smokes. You really don't want to be kicking people off every sailing for violating smoking restrictions. They were doing that on Paradise.

I will continue to cruise with HAL as long as they allow balcony smoking.

When they don't I will look for an alternative or stop cruising altogether.

A hermetically sealed interior area would not appeal to me at all as I like to be able to step outside and have a cigarette when I want.

I think it should be possible to group balcony smokers together in one area of cabins (maybe aft) and leave the rest for the non smokers. Hotels manage to do this so I don't see why cruiseships can't.

Actually, here is the USA some states have passed laws where the hotels are all non-smoking. That is the case where I live as well as other states I have traveled to. However, you can go outside to smoke.

And many of the major hotels have voluntarily made their hotels completely non smoking. All the Marriott and Westons for example. I read somewhere that 62 per cent of US hotels are currently completely non smoking. That per cent will continue to go up.

Just off the Westerdam. Had a suite with balcony. Any time we went out to enjoy the views and fresh sea air on our balcony we were inundated with second hand smoke. Not enjoyable.....Wish Holland America would change their policy.

Don't hold your breath! On the other hand, holding your breath might be the way to deal with HA smoke because HA seems to have little interest in the subject.

We have just paid our deposit for our cruise from Los Angeles to Sydney on the Volendam. After seeing the list of where smokers are allowed to smoke in side, as non smokers I am worried how the ship will smell, will it be that bad that we wont be able to even go in the casino etc because of the smoke. Can any non smoker please tell me what it is like, do they have good ventalation in those areas.

Hey, I am an ex-smoker and I have probably been on the Volendam more than any other DAM ship. The ship does not have oders from smoke. Believe me there is no one as anti-smoke as an ex-smoker and I have been off them for almost 21 years.

Oders remind me of a story from my childhood. It seems in the 1940's a woman from North Oak Park, IL got on the old Chicago Avenue street car to go down to the Lake Shore Athletic Club to play bridge with her rich friends. Someplace along the line a garbage man with all the oders of a Chicago alley in July got on the street car and set next to this woman. She said: "My you smell!" He said: "O no lady, you smell--I stink"

I beg to differ, there were odors on Volendam. On deck 5 from the casino they seeped out to the nearby lounges.

We were last on the Volendam December 2011.

On Deck 5, because of the smell of smoke from the Casino, we avoided the area from the central elevators through to the Atrium.

If that area no longer suffers from the smokers smell, we will be very pleased during our next cruise.

The better the hotel the more likely it will be all non-smoking. I looked at a smoking "rights" website -- interesting, they track smoking availability around the world. I checked my hometown of San Diego, CA. They list 30 hotels that have some smoking rooms, and 119 with no smoking at all.

The lower priced the hotel the more likely they'll offer smoking. The demographic of smokers tends toward the less affluent. I'm sorry if some take offense to this, it's just a fact. With each level of education the % of smokers decreases, likewise as income goes up, the % of smokers decreases.

Motel 6 and Carnival will be among the last to have serious smoking restrictions. It's surprising that HAL is lagging behind the times.

Some of the Finer Hotels do not even allow someone to stand outside the door and smoke in the doorway. We were at a Four Seasons for five days last June and never saw a person on property smoking.
