So I was reading A thread on here someone complaining about her neighbors and she said when she was in line at guest services 20 people in front of her were canceling there pre paid gratuities .. I m new to cruising Why would people do this ? When we went We had excellent service and provided an extra tip at the end 11.50 a day is hardly enough for all the staff it extends too ? I Have seen this mentioned before as well Do they wait to see if service is up to standard ??? Im just curious

1. gratuity - a gift of money, over and above payment due for service!

For reasonable people that would make sense to receive the service before paying. Prepaying gratuity, isn't that an oxymoron? I think they are removing the auto-tip, which is added each day, but for our family of four that almost $50 per day, $350 on a 7 day cruise. It's recommended not required so it's really up to one's conscience. They are really two different things.

You are confusing pre pay with auto tip.

Pre pay is actually paying tips before you board the ship, usually made around the time you pay off your cruise.

Auto tip is where they charge your sail and sign account, and you don't actually pay till after you get off the ship, unless you are paying your S&S account with cash.

Some people just like to tip with cash.

Any option is acceptable, and is up to the individual how they wish to extend tips.

For some reason, how others tip seems to irritate others, who start calling people names if they don't tip in the same manner they do.

You would think they would be more interested in finding out why they paid 25% more for their cruise than their neighbor.

Some people think they should pay a wage like that what is paid in the US or Canada. If that happened cruising would become the purview of the very rich and famous. The mass cruising like it currently exists won't exist.

This also applies to all inclusive resorts in Mexico and other Caribbean countries. I have family that thinks a tip in restaurant ( four people for supper) should be $2.

Simply the tourist industry as it exists now won't.

Thank you and as ALWAYS some did not read the OP post before responding....shm! Many may do auto tip but not necessarily pre pay gratuity. On RCCL we were required to pay the gratuity upfront for anytime dining but could auto tip for traditional dining. With such haste it's hard to believe who really tip at all

Logic and common sense doesn't work on these boards....especially the Carnival forum....

But that is the real and only answer.

Saw that post to. Would like to know how that poster knows that the 20 people in line in front of them was removing their tips.

Folks also mistakenly believe that prepaid tips are paying for something before receiving anything. They don't seem to get that when guests choose to prepay for their own convenience, the crew does not receive the tips until after the cruise.

Of course, the fact the anti group prepays for the cruise before " receiving anything" does not seem to penetrate.

Unfortunately, some do not realize these are not traditional tips as we understand it in the US.

Cruise lines use the word gratuity and handle it this way in compliance US labor tax laws..but make no mistake, this is not a tip. It is their salary.

Personally I wish they would call it what it really is...a service surcharge.

NCL has already changed their verbiage to Service Surcharge .....

IF Carnival included it in their price, then there would be tax implications ....which we the customer would ultimately pay in higher cruise prices.

As long as people want the privilege of cruising, then they should follow the protocol. Cabin stewards and wait staff should not have to work for free....because someone does not like the way cruise lines handle their salary.

Must agree that the definitive answer is CHEAP!

Followed by overextended financially for whatever reason!

Evil/Greedy may apply to some, too.

The cheapest 3-4 day cruises will attract those with less disposable income and will be more likely to remove their tips.

Must disagree with the notion that gamblers are broke as a reason. There are, believe it or not, people who like gambling as a form of entertainment, the chase, the thrill, whatever. And they are not broke, but may be Cheap, too!

Disagree with partiers having drunk all there money too. Maybe some do, but most people who pay for a cruise and all that that entails, including some drinking can afford it. They are also cheap!

We drink & gamble and tip above and beyond the auto-tips, some more than others depending upon their service AND attitude, helpfulness, etc....

Btw, it is not hard to hear folks removing their tips....

Some "say" they are paying in cash. I assure you (according with the many staff I have talked with) that is not the case.

Way to many are getting stiffed!

Privilege? Anyone can cruise. And anyone can tip, along the lines of how they tip anywhere, based on service.

And they are tips just like in any service industry, except these individuals get room and board.

And MOST important, anyone taking this job gets explained to them EXACTLY how their "pay" works. Then they decide.

I asked this question maybe a month ago and was terrified to post again for two or three weeks. :-) I have concluded that some people just spend more than they expect or lose a few hundred at the casino and cancel tips. The weirdest justifications are that the company, not the passengers, should be paying (if they built it into your fare would you be saving anything?)

It's funny reading here that people are cheap when the rest of the cruise world thinks Carnival cruisers are cheap, or like that 'other' place. One kind of cheapness verses another kind still spells cheap. I wish they would include the tip/charge in the rate and be over and done. If Carnival does this (but the other lines don't) the fare would be higher and we would be cheap no more.

If you cruise Carnival = cheap

If you cruise Carnival but don't tip = cheaper

If you book the cheap fare, don't tip and don't spend any money = cheapest

This would only make sense if tips were still in cash.
