Bad Publicity For Celebrity

Why does the media feel the need to condemn a specific cruiseline...for goodness sakes, this would have happened on any cruiseship.

I'm sure careless husband (or other family member) received payment from TT as well a refund from the cruiseline.

In response to the report on Today Tonight we sincerely believe we have done our best for Mr and Mrs Arnold. We were very concerned about Mrs Arnold’s wellbeing. She was found upset and disorientated. She was alone and she was travelling in a cabin with a balcony. Our medical team and our Care Team did everything they could to help Mrs Arnold. They could not reach Mr Arnold who was not on the ship. We transferred her to hospital and our Care Team followed up with Mr Arnold. We are providing a refund for the remainder of their holiday with us. We are sorry their cruise holiday ended this way but we believe we acted in the best interests of Mrs Arnold.

Agree. The media will do anything that they know will interest the general public and generate more money for them! For once, it was not P & O in the firing line!

Well, he did say after having been on a P&O cruise earlier this year they decided they wanted to try a nicer ship. ;). :p

Who , What , Why, Where and When ....

questions that are sadly lacking in the young journalists of today. They, the Media , are only interested in grabbing your attention so you look at their news item . They tug on heart strings so they can go back to their advertisers and charge them more money because they have reached more people.

Anyone with dementia can not be left alone at any time.

The lesson from all of this is quite simply ...

get out there, book your cruises now

and enjoy them while you can.

I saw the segment and changed channels after deciding the report was biased and full of lies.

Today Tonight or "Barcelona Tonight" does seem to have a propensity for telling lies and seems to have a hatred of cruise ships. During the Brimble coronial inquiry they fabricated a story on P&O about crew members delivering drugs to a reporters cabin with the envelope "complements of P&O cruises" stamped on it.

There has to be more to the story that they are letting on and Celebrity cant breach their privacy by revealing the full details apart from their statement already. I have seen on many cruises that the staff go above and beyond to look after passengers. They even escort drunk passengers back to their cabin who have lost their way.

I recon there is much more to this story than just getting lost on the ship. For her to be seen by doctors it had to have been quite serious and the line quite rightly disembarked them to hospital. They are not a nursing home and do not employ nurses to look after passengers. There would be almost 3000 passengers and crew on that ship for the small medical team to look after.

Watching that story last night had me thinking.

My wife and I have taken my mother on two cruises who has all the tell-tale signs of dementia. First one was fine - a little disorientated for the first few days, but settled into a routine and could find her way around the ship easily. Fast forward 18 months, and while everything seemed fine in the home environment, we felt confident she would be OK on a 20 day cruise from Singapore to Sydney. Alarm bells started to ring, when she had no idea that we were in Singapore (thought she was in Sydney - starts with an S I suppose) and very disorientated on the ship with no sign of improvement after a week or so. My wife being a nurse and working with older people strongly suspected the advancement of some earlier signs she had spotted relating to the onset of dementia. We ended up not leaving her alone for the rest of the trip, but would escort her to shows, etc that she wanted to see and pick her up afterwards.

Seems so sad that to think we will not be able to take her again - the body is physically capable, money is not the constraint it once was when struggling to bring up a family but the mind is not. The mother in law is the complete opposite - sharp mind, but physically not able.

I think Channel 7 need a good kick up the backside. Celebrity should report them to the Media Authority. Irresponsible reporting.

I place fault for this incident purely on the husband of the dementia patient, for leaving her behind on the ship.

A good comment on FB by Celebrity, concise and to the point.

Remember my quote..'Adventure before Dementia.' How appropriate to this matter.

Yes, I don't know what exactly X could do differently. They are taking a beating here that I feel is undeserved, there are plenty of things that they could be criticised for (website issues that continue) but I feel this issue is not thier fault, it lies with Mr Arnold. :D

IMO definitely the husband to blame no matter what he says, he new the warning signs were there. Why would anyone want to go on a tender for one hour?. I thought the original story from the Cairns newspaper said that he returned to dock to find his wife with the suitcases and did not return to the ship. I don't think it would matter which cruise line they were on as the captain would have reviewed the situation and make the same decision. There are no second chances when it comes to ship security as it is their responsibility for the safety of all passengers and crew aboard.

His story didn't add up. That scenario was shown as a 're-enactment' of the episode on the TV, but he spoke of speaking to the doctor who could hardly speak English, being literally frog-marched of the ship... and yet they were met with their bags on the dock by a staff member & sent packing??

And it seems mighty unlikely he was gone for just an hour, when you consider the tendering operation. Perhaps the cruiseline should publish his departure and return times.

Today Tonight should not be reporting stories unless they can have both sides put forward their case.

It looked to me as if they sat there and believed every word that came out of the husbands mouth.:(

He has a lot to answer. One wonders just how much 'caring' the wife gets by him at home.

Not to mention the "cruise bashers" who watched the program who will all be saying "see, don't go on a cruise, they've all got dementia".... and so the rumour will begin. :(

Jill:)

I have learnt two valuable lessons from this story.

The first is when being a complainant, you should always write down exactly what happened so the story is straight and cannot be twisted.

The second is to never watch Today tonight again as they are just reallly crpa at journalism and present dodgy stories for the sensationalism.:D

Mr Arnold's story doesn't add up, but I don't think it would be wise for Celebrity to engage in an argument on exactly what happened and how long he was ashore. People who want to believe the worst of the cruiseline will do anyway and no amount of pointing out the inaccuracies in the reporting will make any difference. Celebrity have issued a statement and it is probably best if they leave it at that so it will die down quickly.

The family is lucky she didn't manage to get off the ship while lost. That could have been a serious issue!

I hope the cruise line did consider other options before offloading such as shifting cabins (anyone with an inside want to swap? :), securing the balcony door and banning both of them from leaving the ship and requiring the husband to agree to supervise her 24/7. It's possible they did and he rejected them.

Agree totally. And I am sorry to say that it is not just TT that does not let the truth get in the way of a good story. Australia's national broadcaster did a similar thing a while back in one of its main programs - not interested in hearing what the actual facts were.:( Seems rather a common trait in today's media.

Unfortunately it is not limited to one station, it abounds in all of them. Thankfully, there are still some shows that provide unbiased news and journalistic stories of quality presenting both sides of an argument objectively. These are becoming rarer though.:D.

Do you know the unwritten motto of all journalists????

NO NEWS -- IS BAD NEWS!!!! Quick - we better make some up!!

Good news doesn't sell media stories. The first 5 minutes on domestic tv news is always a series of bad news even if some of it is quite petty.

Just saw another promo for TT about another grumpy old couple being bumped off a bus trip. Oh dear.
