Cash Vault casino game - anyone ever win?

On the Sapphire Princess' Hawaii 15 night cruise this month the Wake Show winners were given vouchers for the Cash Vault casino game. Each "play" was valued at $1.00. We of course lost all our vouchers (won the Wake Show trivia question three times and got two vouchers for each win) It sure looks like the game is impossible to win.

While it was fun to hear our names pulled during the Wake Show, I think I'd have preferred no prize than to have wasted my time on the Cash Vault.

Are they giving out these vouchers as prizes on other ships? I miss the good old days of coffee mugs and umbrellas.

When we were on our 28 day trans-atlantic this past fall, for some reason my husband and I had our names picked for the Wake Show trivia about 15 times. The Cruise Director and his assistant were apologizing to the passengers that they picked our names so many times. I just wanted as many vouchers for the cash vault as I could get.

When we were in Europe the top prize was 250 Euros. When we started to cross the Atlantic they changed it to $500 US and an Ipad.

Needless to say, after all those chances, I was close, but no cigar.

I have seen a couple of people win.

It is like the arcade game with the crane and teddy bears, it will only pay out after a certain number of games have been played. In the case of the 'crane' usually every 15 or 20 games.

The vault game is probably every 300 or so.

So is it truly a game of skill where you have to get it dead on through the keyhole to win or is it a scheduled payout like you said where it really doesn't matter if you performed well or not?

I've seen these machines on land as well (typically called KeyMaster, and offering no cash but a number of other prizes.) Apparently the payout can be set by the operator, and it defaults to 1 payout per 700 chances, but can be set as low as 1 payout per 9,999 chances. More here:

So no matter how many times we would have won the Wake Show trivia (we won twice) there was mathematically little to no way to win on the Vault machine. At least we only lost a couple of additional dollars after using our vouchers. We won't do that again.

Only if you were player 700 (or whatever it is set to)

Also like slot machines, you could play one for hours, give up and the next player hits the jackpot on the first spin.

Correct. in most cases, by law, mechanical gaming (slots, etc) must be set to pure chance with no skill component. Even bonus games have output predetermines, which box or whatever you choose has no real impact).

There are two types of settings, average payout as percentage, or sequential win. Most slots use a payout range and randomly generate amounts to stay within that range over a bank. Games like cash valult are usually sequential range (for example set it to 1 in 700 and your actual range is 1 in 680 to 720 so that someone can't sit there and count 700 players...)

Gee, and all this time I thought it was just me, not lining the key correctly to go into the lock. I really thought this game was more skill than how many times it was played.

Me too... so the machine won't "allow" folks to win no matter how well they line up the key??

I have seen two people win on this machine on the Royal Carribean FOS. Was quite a bit of excitement when the young man won the $800. The other person won $100 later in the cruise. Those machines had a lot of play.

It is entertaining to watch. People try so hard to line up the key, thinking it's a game of skill.

I would love to see someone win!

I was on the Coral Princess Dec 7th for the 11 day trip to the Panama Canal. The won the Wake Show trivia contest 2 times. I received a Princess lanyard and a coupon for the casino vault machine. So I had 2 vouchers to work with. I watched a few people try the machine. Now I am not a gambler but I was surprised by the number of people just start playing the machine and never read the directions. You need to move the lever to get the key in position and push the blue button to move the key up to the opening. People never read that the minute you release the blue button the game was over. Then I saw 2 men working together to play the machine. One on the side of the machine to see when the key was level and tell the person to release the blue button. There are 3 rows of prizes. The bottom row has $100 dollar packets. The middle row had $200 and the top $500 and IPAD"S. The middle row was the best chance since it was closer to eye level. The bottom level was too low and the top row to high for me AND you have only 30 seconds to complete the task. With that being said I had nothing to lose since I won the two chances. The two men stayed to guide me. I actually thought I might win since everything went well but the first try I was barely tapped the bottom of the key entry and the second try I barely tapped the top part of the key opening. They said try your own $1 now. I said no. That is how they get your money. One gentleman came by and said he had stopped there everyday to check the machine and only 1 prize was missing the whole time and that might have been from the last cruise or a year ago. I did have fun meeting new people but didn't think it was a machine you had a chance with.

I really hope it's not rigged, but from what that website says, it sounds like it is. On one of our cruises, 2 prizes were won within the 7 day cruise. It seems unlikely that the machine was played 700 times x 2 to win 2 prizes since the casino was usually empty, but you never know.

I have to stop lurking and comment.

My husband WON $500 plus an IPad on that machine last September! He was using a free pass given to him by the internet manager! We were on the Coral on the 3 day repositioning cruise From Vancouver to LA after the final Southbound Alaska cruise.

He had to take me to the casino so I could see what all the fuss was about...

btw, even after he won, we put no $ into that machine. It sure LOOKS easy yet he was supposedly the first winner in many cruises. A real money maker for them!

I'm still miffed that this is a game of chance and not skill. Thankfully I never put money in the darn thing, but I assuredly thought about it (never had a $1 in my pocket when I was wandering through the casino :p ). On my last cruise, the top prize was $1,000, no iPad. Someone apparently did win the intermediate prize...
