No smoking on balconys?

Recommended Posts

This whole thing seems painfully simple to me. If you place a high priority on being able to smoke on your balcony book with a cruise line that allows that. There are a number of companies that have not banned smoking, so there's no need to sneak around and no need for potential confrontation with other guests, fines, debarkation, etc.

People choose their own priorities and then can go and choose the product or offering that best suits them. If it's not Royal Caribbean, no problem, others offer what you want. If smoking on your balcony is not as high of a priority as other features and amenities of Royal Caribbean, book an RCI cruise and don't worry about it.

Everything else is just mental stroking and a waste of energy.

It doesn't screw the air up for all the other cabins, just yours. Each cabin has its own thermostat so it can't affect another cabin.

Well I have seen plenty of posts in the past to the contrary.

No matter how many smoking threads I read , and I do find them entertaining so I read a lot of them. I am just always amazed with some of the responses

First off I am a smoker. I only smoke in designated smoking areas, and I do think smokers who smoke in non smoking areas are wrong.

But come on with some of these posts . "You need to accept that it is my right to report you" "I have no problem marching to the front desk or calling security" "I don't know if it is a real cigarette or an E Cig , I will just report you" "If you light up in front of me it won't be pretty" There was a thread one time where someone said they would walk around the ship with a camera and take pictures of offenders.

It's like some people are going on vacation hoping and praying someone smokes so they can report them and then be able to come back here and report they got someone fined $250 . Or they will complain that no one on the ship did anything and who in the cruiseline hierarchy can they write to start more trouble.

I think some people think the cruiseline will reward them with half the fine money for every offender they catch.

If you smoke in your cabin or on your balcony you "may" get a $250 fine, you may even get that fine everytime you do smoke in a non smoking area and then again you "May" not.

I have been asked many times when I did smoke to move to a smoking area but I was never fined or charged

The fact is a $250 fine imposed by a cruise line has nothing to do with the health or safety of other passengers, its a cleaning deodorizing charge:D

I have vaped in RCI inside cabins and in front of staff while in inside areas, RCI cannot charge a $250 fine for vaping because that fine/charge has no justification.

Holier than thou individual staunch anti smoking campaigners do not have a leg to stand on in this respect. If seen vaping you "may" be asked to cease in that area and that is it, no more no less.

I have yet to be asked not to vape in a non smoking area on a cruise.

The anti smoking advocates re vaping have no "real voice" on the issue and this makes them Pis##:D:D:D Thus the posts

Well it's not true and not possible.

To prevent getting this thread too far off topic, I won't go into an explanation of a ship's A/C. All I'll say is, you are not correct. Yes, an open balcony door in hot weather can and will affect your neighbor's A/C.

I find that hard to believe. I've never seen a system that would act like that. The only way I see it happening is if a zone got overloaded causing the cooling unit or similar system for all cabins in that zone to crash. But fluctuations in one tstat in the zone should never affect the others.

I have no problem smoking in the designated areas but it drives me nuts when I'm in my designated smoking spot and a non-smoker decides to sit beside me and ***** that I'm smoking. Really?????

I'd also like to know when are the cruise ships going to put a ban on that stinky cheap perfume that so many people love to bathe in? One whiff of that crap and it's migraine city for me. :(

I'm glad RCI has gone non-smoking. There were certain public indoor areas I couldn't go because of the smoke.

I guess they don't want smoking on balcony in case people take it inside the room. It is very hard to get smoke out of a room.

I am the same way with certain scents even though I ma a smoker. Places like Yankee Candle and perfume counters bother the heck out of me . I just avoid them. easy enough.

I just pay no mind to the people complaining about smoking in a smoking area . The have 95% of the world (or ship) to roam about. I don't invade their area , don't invade mine.

There is still public indoor area for smoking, the casino allows smoking, even if there is supposed to be non-smoking area you can't avoid the smoke. Used to be non-smoking out of UK but it will not be this year.

I have moved away from people because the scent they are wearing bothers me.

I have also gone out on the "smokers" side of the deck with my husband and listened to the people complain about the smoke. I have felt like telling them to go to the other side of the ship if they want to be in a smoke free area. As a non-smoker, I do smell the smoke also, however it is not like being "trapped" inside of a small room filled with smoke. It is minimal. I often wonder how some of these people would have "survived" just twenty to thirty years ago when people smoked at work, in the grocery stores, restaurants, and just about everywhere else. Heck, when we first started cruising 13 years ago, people smoked in the inside cabins. Ours came with an ash tray,(but my husband always went outside on deck to smoke). While I'm on a semi-soap box, I'm sure some of the complainers have fireplaces (so I have to keep my windows closed or choke on that smell), drive cars everywhere (polluting the air I breathe), and others live in big cities, by choice, where breathing the air is like smoking a pack a day only to complain about someone lighting up in a smoking area. Enough said.

I have been working in the same place for 30 years. Back in the early 80s the smokers smoked right next to the non smokers and you NEVER heard a complaint, a cough , nothing.

As soon as all the no smoking laws started and the signs went up . All the theatrics, coughing, arm waving , "I can't breath" "My eyes burn" "I wanna throw up",

But another thing is , you are not supposed to leave the balcony door open because it screws up the air conditioning for all the other cabins on that line, so that is a no no too

Nope that is a myth. Each room has a self-contained system that is not affected by an adjacent room.

This was verified by myself on three different classes of ships by engineers on the ships.

Also, when you open your door, the A/C and heating system is turned off anyways. There is a magnetic switch in the door that knows whether you have your door open or not. In fact on the Liberty when I went on a behind the scenes tour, they showed me that they can monitor not only the door position (open or closed), but the temperature of each individual room.

That logic is SO insanely flawed.

Swap out smoking for treating women like some men did.

I have been working in the same place for 40 years. Back in the early 70s the men talked like sexist jerks right next to the women and you NEVER heard a complaint, a whine, nothing.

As soon as all the sexual harassment laws started and the signs went up . All the theatrics, whining, indignant attitudes , "I can't work like this" "No you can't smack me on the butt and call me sugar" "I wanna throw up because he talked down to me like that"

You cannot say that because something was done a certain way in the past that, because it is seen in a different light today, that the conduct is acceptable.

I grew up during the time when smoking was everywhere, and I suffered. Complaining did no good, because at that time smokers had more rights than those who were bothered by the smoke. I stayed away from optional places where smoking was prevalent, and dealt with headaches and nausea when I had to deal with it. I am one of those people who is very, very happy that the tide has turned.

This worked out great.

We just came off the Oasis 2 days ago. No problem with smoking out on our balcony. Nobody complained and the gentlemen next to me was smoking cigars on and off all week. I also brought my smokeless ashtray which worked out great.

So you bumped this thread that died 2 days ago only to brag that you are above the rules. Classy.

the reality of smoking on your balcony is you can unless someone complains. I only smoke cigars and pipes but no one has ever complained. but, it's boring out there and I would rather head up to the smoking area by the pool and shoot the breeze with the other out-cast.
