Did You, Are You Change Cruise Lines?

Hi all,

I'm sorry to barge into your board but hope you don't mind. :o

I asked a question on the HAL forum and it was suggested I ask it here and NCL forums, as well.

I know we've all had threads about smoking and many are tired of them but I have a question we had not had asked or answered, so far as I know, until I asked it today?

Did You/Are You Switching Cruise Lines?

"Don't shoot me but I'm really interested and, therefore, asking.....

Have you or are you planning to switch to HAL because you can no longer smoke on your favorite cruise line's verandah?

Have you or are you planning to switch cruise lines because you do not like that HAL continues to permit smoking on verandahs?

Do you have friends or family who are doing one or the other?"

Thanks."

Of course, the question here is If you book verandah cabins and you are a smoker, will you begin to sail HAL as one of the few remaining cruise lines that permits smoking on verandahs?

I'm a frequent cruiser on both Carnival and NCL. I am actually happy that there won't be smoking on balconies. While we don't book them often, when we do it is because we intend to spend a lot of time outdoors. Nothing ruins that for me than inhaling second-hand smoke.

I don't think we are HAL type cruisers but knowing that smoking is allowed on balconies, I wouldn't waste my money of one.

I am in charge of planning a HAL cruise (17-night) for a family member, and booked an OV rather than a balcony as she is sensitive to smoke. No point spending money for a balcony if she might not be able to use it. So HAL lost some $ from her, but may sell that balcony a smoker instead. She loves HAL otherwise, and hopes they follow the rest and ban balcony smoking.

I'm just as curious and want to hear from all the posters that said they cancelled their Carnival cruise and booked with NCL ... Now what are you going to do?

BTW, does anyone know if NCL offered the same "you can cancel with a full refund if you're not happy with their smoking rules"?

Ditto!:D

By the way, I just got off a 3-day cruise to Mexico on the Carnival Inspiration and smoking was allowed on the balconies and on other areas of the ship. So unless this is something Carnival is going to be changing in the near future...according to the Fun Times or our cruise this past weekend...smoking was not prohibited on private balconies.

I wouldn't be surprised if HAL doesn't follow the smoking ban soon. It was only a few weeks ago when Carnival smokers vowed to sail NCL from now on, only to be slapped with NCL's ban a few days later. :o

I won't cruise HAL because I am too young for that crowd. That being said I don't see the point in ever booking anything other then an interior cabin from now on. I have no reason to splurge for a balcony now

That's why I came here to ask and plan to go to the NCL forum.

There have been times we could not use our verandah the whole cruise due to smokers on both sides of us and I'm wondering if HAL is one of the few that continue to permit smoking, will smokers from Carnival and NCL move on over to HAL?

Thanks for the responses.

To the OP and Tapi:

NCL has followed Carnival's lead in not allowing smoking on balconies effective 11/1/2014 across all ships.

BTW ... All Carnival Inspiration/Imagination sailings will continue to offer smoking on balconies through October of this year and that is why you did not see any change as of yet on Inspiration/Imagination for your 3 day trip.

We would change to HAL but we are to young for that crowd. Sailed once before and didn't fit in. At this time we are booking with Carnival or NCL for out Nov cruise, may take a land trip somewhere.

I suspect this change was actually driven by insurance companies, and as such I would be surprised if HAL doesn't soon follow suit.

After that Star Princess fire a few years back I'm mildly surprised that any cruise lines allow smoking at all.

It is taking place in October. Along with an increase of the gratuities to $12.

just was on the Glory 2 wks ago and saw the same

I guess they are just giving people a little time to get used to the idea.

Not being a smoker I can only imagine that HAL may be making a target of themselves if is perceived that this is the cruiseline that smokers might tend to choose because of their smoking policy.

I think that as fewer people smoke (at least in they West), the cruiselines will all find that they can more easily change smoking rules to the benefit of their clients and employees.

I was quite surprised how little smoking there was in the public areas where smoking is permitted. This was definitely noticed in the casino. I realise that just as a matter of chance there may have been fewer smokers onboard to account for this. Although if this is a trend I am sure it would be welcomed by many.

I would never switch cruise lines or cancel cruises due to a smoking policy, unless the entire ship was non-smoking (remember Carnival Paradise and that failed try at a non-smoking ship?). As a smoker, I hope HAL follows the rest of the company policy.

Besides, if I need a tobacco nicotine "fix", I know how to smoke in my cabin without ever being detected, but I'm not telling the secret!

Real tobacco aside, if you smoke e-cigs on the balcony, no one will ever notice- same for in the cabins!

I have no idea smoking was not allowed on balconies on Carnival or NCL. however if that in fact is true I think it's huge benefit. We often book after balconies are extended balcony cabins it's been quite a bit of time out there and if I know I'm not going to be bothered by other people smoking next to me so much the better

My cruise ship is the one that I can afford at that time.

If HAL lowers the price I might consider cruising there.

NCL- not a chance.

But No i will not be changing cruiselines because I cant smoke on a balcony.

You must have missed all the latest info....Both CCl and NCL are going non smoking on balconies. CCL will be non smoking on balconies on cruises that leave after Oct 9 and NCl I believe starts in Nov.

Yes it is allowed now....but not in the near future.

We sailed on HAL last year for the 1st time, and we were in our 30's and early 40's. We didn't consider ourselves to be "too young", but it's definitely a different vibe. There were plenty of young people, singles, families, and married couples,

If you believe that a more polished and sophisticated ambiance is only for old people, then yes, HAL may not be for you. But IMHO, you're never too young to appreciate nicer things. Not all young people are entertained by a hairy chest contest or a bartending competition. :)

Personally, the change has made no change in either direction for me as to which cruise line I will choose to cruise. Happy sailing

After sailing on our first Carnival ship during spring break, we vowed never to sail her again - but we did and we will continue to do so.

After surviving the poor service on the American-flagged and crewed NCL Pride of Aloha, we vowed never to sail NCL again - but we did and might sail her again.

Would love to sail HAL - for their exclusive continuous promenade deck and other reasons.

So we will never 'switch' cruise lines but will always try new lines.

Now, how to afford the luxury all-inclusive lines like Regent Seven Seas.....

As a soon to be Diamond Plus on Royal Caribbean I have to say that I am glad that Carnival decided to implement the no-smoking-on-balconies rule. So much so that I booked the March 2, 2015, 12-day round-trip out of Galveston sailing.

What is the date i October that Carnival will no longer allow smoking. I sail October 26th and was under the impression it would be no smoking - please please. My last cruise was seriously hampered by the chain smokers next door.

The new policy is effective Oct. 9th. So yes, on your cruise, no smoking will be allowed on balconies.
