Just curious about make up of repeat cruisers

I have found that they do announce it on most ships. It is funny, to pass the time waiting for my next cruise I lurk on these boards. So many people are repeat cruisers here that I always find it surprising how many people are first time cruisers on the ships.

I agree with that statement, though it can vary from ship to ship or itinerary. Oasis and Allure drew in a lot of first time cruisers. My one cruise out of San Juan seem to have a lot more repeat cruisers. On occasion in the Welcome back parties they will casually mention the stats for that particular cruise.

I always though that HAL had the highest number of repeat cruisers? I wonder if anyone has compiled this information?

There is statistics compiled for everything now adays....so I expect it can be found somewhere.

Not that I would be the one looking for it.

I wouldn't judge by the welcome back party. People who cruise RCCL a lot don't always go to those parties. It gets same old, same old, they are all alike. Usually mostly a pitch for new bookings.

Good thing not everyone invited comes. Not sure there would be any place on board big enough! :). ...Back to topic....

At the welcome back event you usually get information on upcoming things happening in the Royal world...I don't describe it as a 'sales pitch for new bookings' but some might feel that it is.

I have also met some nice people at those gatherings that are avid cruisers like we are....so it depends upon your outlook.

Really can't provide any hard data about what cruise line has the most repeat cruisers, but Carnival's revamped loyalty program was supposedly in response to their fast growing number of past guests. According to Carnival, they had so many people that qualified for past guest perks (like the past guest party, unlimited free laundry, and free casino tournament entry), that they had to find a way to limit the number of those who qualified.

The way to do so was to create a new level (red) with less perks. Basically, they downgraded a bunch of people that used to be gold and took away their past guest party perk. The only perk for them is now a voucher for one free drink . Then, they grandfathered people that used to be Platinum under the old rules, BUT they took away the free laundry, the free casino tournament entry, and the guaranteed dinner time preferences .

The result? A bunch of pi$&@ off past guests, and many of them branching out to new cruise lines. Carnival is obviously still filling up their ships, but they now seem to gear their marketing towards the new, first time cruiser rather than retaining past cruisers.

In the newer markets, e.g. Asia, the proportion of first-timers would likely be much higher.

When we sailed on the retrofitted Legend out of Singapore, the Diamond Lounge was such a pleasant place because it was always almost empty. Fewer than 40 Diamonds on board.

When my parents sailed on the Mariner, again out of Singapore, they closed the Diamond Lounge! Too few Diamonds. So they got to use the Concierge Lounge instead.

If I recall correctly, when we sailed out of Sydney on the Voyager of the Sea (Dec 2012), there were fewer than 400 C&A members on board. This is a ship that can carry up to 3,800 pax.

On another sailing on the Celebrity Silhouette, there were 700 pax doing B2B.

It is generally accepted that new cruisers spend more on board than seasoned cruisers hence more profit. New cruisers tend to go for photos more; try the upcharge restaurants; cruise-line excursions; bingo; cruise-line souvenir tat etc..

They have not worked out the good and not so good value items. Also they do not cost in terms of past passenger perks.

We have noticed our per-day spend on board is getting less each cruise (particularly on upcharge dining - not so much on booze!)

Very true. The new cruisers go 'wild'. Want to try everything as if it would be their first and last time they ever cruised.

This is the most accurate response to your question regarding the "make up" of returning C&A guests - Allure June 29.

Out of 6300+ total guests:

...

2264 C&A members = 35 percent

I attended the Welcome Back Party on Allure May 4th, 2014 sailing and similar numbers were reported for that cruise (2400-ish, IIRC). For some reason, I really expected the percentage would be much higher (like 50% or more). I know there were a lot of first time cruisers on that sailing - there was a large contingent who had "won" the cruise for doing well in some kind of home business. I figured that was impacting the numbers, but maybe not.

I'd be curious what an older/smaller ship's numbers look like. Allure is kinda the flagship of the fleet and is likely to draw new cruisers.

I have yet to attend one and know many other people who don't as well.

We usually go but we meet people on every cruise who do not. I think if they took the sales pitch out and made it more about the cruisers, they'd get higher attendance numbers. But, honestly, most I've been to have been pretty packed.

On our very first cruise on Navigator in 2003, we were waiting on the pool deck for our number to be called to leave the ship after a wonderful cruise. People were lingering around, looking over their sea pass bill....when a couple was nearby and literally unrolled a ream of paper which was the itemized charges on their bill.

Gosh only knows what that added up to. All we could do was laugh (just not to loud)....although maybe their were still too drunk to realize what it was.

Next summer we will sail RCI for the 6th. time going on the Oasis.

We have sailed Mariner, Freedom x 2 and Allure x 2.

Prior to this we have cruised Disney (awesome, but pricey)

For us, we are happy with the RCI experience right now.

And we have been able to coordinate sailing with others on most of these cruises.
