This Thread Is To Be Used For All Discussions About HAL's On Board Smoking Policies

 Why all this?

It was a question. I checked to be sure I placed the question mark and

see I did.

I just find it remarkable this 'smoking thread' has turned into a drunken HAL cruiser thread. :D To me, that is about as on point as the perfume posts and overeating comments in a smoking thread especially given how little disruptive drunkedness most of us have ever seen on any HAL ship. Sure, we can pull a story or two out of our mind but it's hardly a pattern.

Thread drift. You've experienced this frequently?

Well, I'm delighted that you have not have your verandah disrupted by anything but smoking.

The point is that some of us have.

As to the 'all this'. You asked frequently when I specifically said one time.

And, as to how little disruptive drunkedness there is, one time is enough thank you.

I hope I never experience it again.

There are a lot of things that can drive us off our verandas

That was my only point and if it digressed from this thread, then I apologize but for some of us there are far worse things than a whiff of smoke.

and no, I won't get started on the perfumes in elevators by people who bathe in it instead of using a dab or walking into the spray as you should do. :p :p:D

It's common on the board. Someone complains about kids bring out the unruly drunks. Say something about smokers, bring out the unruly drunks, fat people, tattoos and perfume. Of course, smelling smoke is also just a whiff. I wish. It's unfortuate that smokers have to quit smoking before they find out how bad smoke smells.

and unfortunate that actual experiences and feelings are discounted.

No need to embellish them. I didn't.

Sorry I posted. Obviously nothing makes people leave their balcony but smokers. so be it. mea culpa.

I'm quite sure it did happen. I'm just saying that posters are quick to point fingers at others and what they do. I've had my share of loud folks on hal. I don't think they were drunk just very, very loud.

While thread drift is a normal result of a discussions of negative behavioral aspects of any activity, we created this thread to combine all discussions of HAL's on board smoking policies.

While excessive drinking and other behaviors of other passengers can be problems, they are not the subject of this thread so it would be appreciated if discussions of subjects other than smoking be the topic of other threads and not discussed in this thread.

Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

I've followed the smoking discussions but really haven't taken part until now, when I have a question I haven't seen.

We've booked a Lanai cabin to Bermuda. What is the situation about smoking outside these cabins?

Smoking is no longer allowed on Lower Promenade Deck.

You should have no problem sitting outside your lanai cabin.

I saw officers smoking on the promenade deck on Prinsendam in July. Also we saw a crew member carry one of the ash boxes away, presumably to empty it. The box was back in place a while later. I think smokers, crew and passengers, know smoking rules are not enforced. It's no wonder smokers are flocking over.

They were smoking on the Veendam last time we were on her last December on the lower promenade deck.

Which does not change the fact that it is a non-smoking area now.

If someone is smoking there, and it is bothersome, report the situation and have a stop put to it.

I'll be in a Lanai cabin on the Veendam next week. Who should I report smokers to? I expect that this issue is one that the front desk will not move up the chain of responsibility. Is there an officer that would handle smoking issues?

for what little it is worth, we were on the ship for 30 days (just got off Oct. 21st) and didn't see any smoking there by anyone.

If you don't think the Front Office would be active in addressing the matter, have a word with Security if the smoke is bothering you.

People obviously adore this thread! Over 30,000 views. What will we do if we can't attack smokers? I agree with Kazu that I've been more bothered by people who have indulged too much in drink than smoking. But then again, we've smoked on our balcony, and maybe we don't notice it. But we're really considerate of other people who don't smoke. We always make sure the neighbours aren't out if we light up. I do totally understand their point of view. I just wish we could get a bit more understanding. I'm bothered more by the smells of heavy perfume, body odor, rude behavior, etc., but to me it's just something you move away from and accept accept when your on a cruise. Granted, on a balcony you cannot move away, so I would just hope that smokers will be considerate of their neighbors. Until then, I hope HAL changes their policy (I can't believe I'm saying this!) to only having some balconies near the rear of the ship for smokers. Honestly, I think most smokers don't want to be a cruise spoiler for others. We just want to enjoy our balconies, too. We already feel like pariahs for this nasty habit that we can't seem to shake, without feeling like others are judging us. I would never make that "cough, cough" remark around someone who doesn't smell good. I would never look at someone who's pretty tipsy and not behaving normally and make comments. We're just all on a cruise to have fun. I think MOST people recognize this and are tolerant. :)

This is not true on the Noordam. They are even enforcing no smoking in areas where the policy says that smoking is allowed, ie Sports and Observation Deck.

Just report it straight to the front desk. That's what I do. On the other lines, on the rare occasion someone breaks the rules and lights up on their balcony, I'm relentless. I get it stoppped immediately. I encourage you to do the same.

No, they are flocking over here because this is the last line they can go where they can enjoy a cigarette on their balcony, they follow the rules, but when the rules make it so you cannot enjoy your cruise on say RCL or CCL you find a line that will accommodate you, or you switch to a different type of vacation.

If someone is smoking in a non smoking area then they should be stopped, but try not to let it take over your whole vacation.

Holland America's published smoking policy is ambiguous. Some would argue that on deck smoking is allowed only on the sports deck and observation deck. Others would argue that smoking is permitted on outside decks, including the enumerated sports deck and observation deck.

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted.

  • Stateroom verandahs
  • Casino (Active players only)
  • Seaview Bar
  • Outside Decks
    • Sports Deck
    • Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only)

Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed and on stateroom verandahs. Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in other public areas of the ship other than on outside decks designated as smoking areas.

Any guest who smokes inside staterooms in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation.

It may be amgiuous regarding other outside decks but it clearly states Sports Deck and Observation Deck and yet these are non smoking:confused:

I think it is deliberately vague and ambiguous. A sort of CYA approach to appease all while saying nothing definitive.

It's only ambiguous if you don't know how to read an outline format. The "outside decks" are listed out under the heading in a fashion as to specify which outside decks have smoking allowed. If the listing "outside decks" meant all of them, there would be no need for the sub-list.

The putrid stench of cigarette smoke ruins aspects of my vacation so if someone is smoking in an area not allowed - such as on balconies on all the other cruise lines - I will make it a point to put an end to it.
