Cruising and Ebola

Is anyone else afraid that it is only a matter of time before the first case of ebola breaks out on a ship and that is the end of the cruise industry?

Since the US is welcoming 150 travelers a day from W. Africa with open arms, it is only a matter of time before it becomes more of a problem than it already is.

I'm terrified!

As well you should be. Ebola is now in Maine, let's hope that this is a coincidence and has nothing to do with the creator of Project Blue, and that it's also just a coincidence that one of the treatment centers is in Nebraska. If Abagail Freemantle, Randall Flagg or Charles Campion are shown to b connected with or control efforts, I'll freak.

Ebola is NOT in Maine. A health care worker who returned from West Africa, and who is not symptomatic, has been asked by the state to quarantine herself. She is fighting this, as she is self-monitoring her health, but the state may look for a court injunction.

You are correct. And I truly wish her well and hope that her health remains good. I was reacting to the irrational fears that my bully Governor and other politicos are playing to.

I should have peppered my post with ;) ;) ;) ;) and   :

Guess the literary references were too esoteric . . .

Not too many Stephen King fans around here I guess.

 Huh?

I googled to see what that abbreviation means, found "fixed that for you" but don't understand what you mean.

I added the word "FAR" in bold-face/underline before "more deaths from influenza than..." also all caps, but the forum software removed that, which was odd.

So I "fixed" the sentence. Forum humor from another site (Ravelry), may not translate across the platform-change!

With a bit of the post snipped out from the whole and multiple posts in this thread by the person who wrote that post, it wasn't clear to what you were referring. Of course, I noticed your emphasis on FAR but had no idea what needed correcting. Actually, I still don't. :D I didn't feel like going back to read each of the complete posts made by that person in this thread.

But to get back to the original point of the thread, I haven't really been keeping up with the Ebola news of late. Up to a fortnight ago, there were two people who had caught Ebola in the USA. How many is the total now?

I am not sure of the number diagnosed with ebola in the US, but we remain at one death

Sorry for distracting people. All I was trying to agree to and say was FAR MORE people die of influenza ("the flu") than Ebola. Annually worldwide, 250,000 to 500,000 people, compared to something under 5,000 so far from Ebola. In the US alone, with modern medicine at our fingertips, from 1976 to 2007, anywhere from 3000 to 49,000 Americans PER YEAR have died of the flu. A disease with a vaccine!

Numbers from Forbes, just two days ago.

Carry on with your discussion! I'm planning a cruise!

He was not form here and had only recently got here from a poor African country so he probably had not had proper nutrition. Americans have a lot better chance of beating it because we have better nutrition. If an American dies from this you can be pretty sure they have a compromised immune system. As in elderly or with a chronic disease such as diabetes, lupus, Addison's,etc. -the same groups more apt to die of the flu.

<sigh> It is "colloidal" silver. It is the mineral you are familiar with, Colloidal just means "particles suspended in a liquid". Nothing to do with a plant.

Here is a wikipedia article on medical silver http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_uses_of_silver, and here is some actual scientific information http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/consumer-health/expert-answers/colloidal-silver/faq-20058061 http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-779-colloidal%20silver.aspx?activeingredientid=779&activeingredientname=colloidal%20silver http://nccam.nih.gov/health/silver

Snake oil won't help for Ebola. All it'll do is make hucksters money.

Yes,someone explained to me it is actually little particles of silver. I know silver is a mineral not a plant. I was not sure if it was actually silver or simply the name.
