We have used the cheers program in the past and never got close to the 15 limit (one sea day I made it to 11) and at the end of the cruise when the slide your statement under the door I did the math and we saved considerable $$. After about 6 drinks in a 24 hr period it worth it In my opinion

Hi Rh2458 :)

Thank you for the info concerning the Cheers Beverage Program price

change as of October 25th, 2014. I'm not sure if any restrictions have

changed, but here is a link to the Cheers Program with detailed info.

I don't think it is all so random. I am sure that these 'free' or low cost cruises are based on a spending pattern or some other basis.

Right. It is all based on the current marketing strategy. Casinos do the same thing. 'Free' offers are sometimes sent to those labeled 'defectors and decliners'. Those that came, spent money, and then did not return for a pre-determined time period. They are worth luring back. At the opposite end are those that spend so much that giving them 'free' rooms and meals does not cost the business a penny.

I sail next Sunday and had my budget all set with a 37.50 price. Back to the drawing board.

We had just decided that we WOULD buy the Cheers program on our next cruise. But someone said with taxes it was $900 for two and there is no way we can justify that amount just for alcohol.

Pretty sure that was for the Breeze 8-day - not that it will be THAT much less for a 7-day!

i just got off both the Glory and Conquest and what I can say, the abuse was maybe part of the decision to raise it back up. Like all things, a few ruin it for the rest. In the Alchemy Bar, people would order two drinks, leave to have a smoke in the adjacent smoking bar, then come back and order two additional, leave and come back and order again, etc. No way they were drinking that many drinks and still be able to walk. They could order drinks in that lounge, but then someone would be watching. Ordering drinks and giving them to NON-cheers participants etc. Also,Another very simple reason, is that Carnival is now getting into their high season. Its all about profit for Carnival. At $ 37.50, it didn't work. At $ 42.50, it maybe was a break even, at $ 47.50, a profit.

What you say may be true, BUT the limit is still 15 drinks per day and Carnival is not loosing money in either way. Especially when they force you to pay for each person in the cabin and the other person may not drink that much at all.

Carnival is not in business to break even or lose money. Nobody is forced to buy the package in the first place.

It is not unusual to read on CC and other places of people who work the system, aka cheat. Part of the price has to account for those who abuse the program.

Anyone else miss the old drink coupons? We aren't big drinkers by any means so we would buy 10 of them and between me, hubby, and my mom, would have a few over the course of the week. It was perfect. Hubby drank beer and we would have our foo foo drinks.

I wish they would bring them back or offer a card that gives you up to 15 drinks a day to be used by anyone. Why should it matter who drinks the drinks if it's cutoff at 15? And that way you don't have single people trying to get their money's worth as I bet a lot of people that buy the card would be couples like ourselves. Just MHO. Carry on.

True no one is forced to buy the cheers package, Also no one is forced to spend money on the ship once they board. Imagine all the people that received the free cruises that didnt spend money after they board, how long would carnival stay in business.

my wife and I were on the glory last spring.....we got the cheers program. Granted it was a good amount more over the fare, but whatever. As mentioned already in this thread it doesn't take long to reach the break even point. If you want to drink a few day and it doesn't make sense, but I feel like most people are towards the upper limit, or the low limit.

I drink a good amount anyway (not cruising) and the 15 drink cap was harder to hit than I though, especially on port days when you're ff the ship (and likely taking advantage of cheap beer, like in Cozumel especially. During the couple sea days I think I got to 13 or 14. It was nice to just belly up to the bar and order something without worrying what the tabs going to beat the end of the cruise.

Also, if you're a social drinker it makes it more fun too. Some of the people we hung out with were ones we met at the Lido bar or something, gave us all something to do together....Also it's fun when you become a regular and the bartenders learn your name.

Yes your right you are not literally forced, but if you want to get the package then you are forced to buy for everyone over 21 in the cabin. You don't have to purchase I know, but trust me they are not loosing money. Maximum of 15 drinks per day and they have maybe a buck/buck fifty to make a drink or a beer. When they buy that much liquer they get it at a very low cost. So Carnival will not be hurt in anyway.. Two people on a seven day cruise is a minimum $600 and then consider the ones that buy on the first day and they make an extra $100..

Quite a while. Free cruises are a promotion and if Carnival doesn't get the return they are looking for, disappear. Besides, most cruises aren't free, including the "free" ones.

Leaves me out, at $37.50 I was going to do it but don't drink enough to justify $49.50!

Same here. I was going to try it on my upcoming Sunshine cruise which would have been $300 for an 8 night. Now, forget it......I'll stick to one beer a night (if any).

Yes, you cannot get two drinks on one card, but both Cheers participants were present and got drinks every 10 minutes, then went to the smoking room with lots of others. I actually followed them and yes, they were sharing drinks with others. Always those that try to bend the rules as much as they can. We had this discussion with other bartenders, and they said as long as the machine prints receipts, they send out drinks. Between the two, they could get 30 drinks and after a full day on shore, it would take more than just one couple to make that happen in just one evening.

Why are you stalking other people on a cruise. Weird

I don't.

Carnival could offer what you suggest but the price would obviously skyrocket to at least double the current price. You would be no better off.

People sharing drinks is not the cause of the price increase. Frankly I'm surprised you took it upon yourself to play Bar Detective and follow those poor people around! The price of the program is already the same as buying one bottle of super-premium spirits per day per person in the stateroom. The marginal cost per drink is minor--what they are looking at is how many customers sign up per sailing. Obviously lowering the price did not goose sales the way they hoped so it's back to the old price.

Early in this thread, someone mentioned regular drink prices went up as well.

Any word on how much? Across the board percentage or just a few here and there.

Was definitely planning on Cheers in 2 weeks but now back on the bubble. We have 4 port days and while I am sure to get my money's worth on sea days, not so sure on port days.

Thanks

It wouldn't take stalking...people watching sure. Why do you have to try and turn this into something that sounds negative? Are you seriously trying to say you've never observed what others are doing?
