MITSUGIRLYS DAWN TO BERMUDA NOVEL (or review as some may call it)

Ok, checked out Comfort Inn Midtown and it won't work for us for several reasons. First there is no parking. Second they want $319+ per room/family. Not within the budget we want to pay at all.

Holiday Inn is pretty much the same thing...$336+ for each room. Nor really what we are looking for.

I think anything within this area or close by is going to be a little more expensive than what we are looking for. I will probably have to stick with an area around NJ with a longer driving distance to get a decent deal.

I was trying to help you stay close to the cruise port and save money on transportation within Manhattan, but also position you so you could enjoy Manhattan and do something cool with Sakari like take her to see her first Broadway show or Central Park or the Statue of Liberty. I was thinking you might grab $1 hot dogs for lunch from a cart or go to Katz' Deli for the best sandwich you will ever have in your life. I would not advise bringing a car into the area due to the general lack of parking and the high cost of parking at the port. It's just that this departure port is really different than the others. There is so much to do in and around Manhattan, even just walking around and looking at all the buildings and people is fascinating, so I was thinking you wouldn't want to pass up the chance to explore the city. You can do self-guided walking tours like these:

https://www.citywalkingguide.com/newyorkcity

Anyway, these ideas might not be of interest to you at all. Just a thought.

scratch my question Kim

I looked at the website and see they do not fly into Westchester.

Any way to get a connecting flight on another airline into Stewart Airport? It puts you an hour away from the pier, hotel prices much cheaper, but does leave you with needing a mini bus service to the terminal. (depending on the head count, limo can do 6-8 with luggage)

You could fly into Albany but that leaves you with a 3 hour trip to the terminal and the cost of transportation would be high (can you rent a mini van with drop off in the city maybe?)

In all honesty, that just sounds like too much work to me. I don't really want to have to fly in to someplace and then have to change air lines or anything. The reason we fly with SW is because it's always cheaper for us and no luggage fees.

Definitely not interested in a 3 hour trip to the terminal at all.

I appreciate your brain storming, but I would much rather be somewhat closer and pay a little more than the hassle of doing all this. LOL :)

Thanks so much, this does help a lot. I am going to print this out so I will remember where to find the miniature setting!

You are very welcome. :)

Sorry for the delayed response - you probably already have your questions answered, but I didn't want to be rude and ignore.

I consider midtown to be both where the cruise port is (albeit all the way West rather than centrally located), as well as where many Manhattan attractions are (ex: Times Square). Definitions of midtown will vary depending on who you ask. To me it is pretty much anywhere from 23rd Street up to around 60th Street, give or take. All in all, Manhattan is a small island and pretty easy to navigate, so where ever you want to go is fairly easily accessible. I recognize that "easy" is relative, especially when you have small kids in tow!

Although some people complain about Newark, I find it to be the easiest airport. Some of that may be because I live a stone's throw from the Holland Tunnel, making it a particularly quick trip (early morning without traffic it is under 30 min). But really, from the airport to any place on the west side (such as the cruise port) is a pretty easy trip.

Thanks for the response and that's what I figured you meant but wasn't sure. :)

I've never read one of your reviews from the Pride of America. Have you cruised Hawaii? A picture person like yourself would be in heaven in Hawaii.

I apologize if I missed a review.

bruce...

No, I forgot about the POA. It hasn't really been one that I have considered or thought about so I have a tendency to forget it's part of the fleet. :p It's just so darn expensive I hear.

Oh I completely understand and I really appreciate it. It's just not something that would work for the entire family this time around since half of them are driving in. They will definitely need a place to park.

I would absolutely love to come and stay a few days to explore, but my work would probably have a fit to allow me off any more time. I have a huge patient load that they already have to find coverage for and since this is my 3rd week off this year, they have a tendency to cover their eyes and look the other way when I walk in with...yet another time off request. LOL They say "Another one?!?!?!?!?" LOL So us getting there at all different times and some driving in, there probably won't be much time to explore too much.

Is there any exploring to be done over in Elizabeth NJ? :p Is there an easy way to get over to some of the places to see in Manhattan? What type of transportation would you need or use?

In Elizabeth, NJ, you might take Sakari to Field Station Dinosaurs if she likes that sort of thing:

http://www.fieldstationdinosaurs.com/about

I was dinosaur crazy as a little kid - so that's why I thought of this attraction!

If you want to go to Manhattan, you might choose to come from Newark Airport and the instructions and costs are here including luggage storage options: http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/newark-airport-to-manhattan/

If you choose to come from Elizabeth, there are 2 train stations in Elizabeth: Elizabeth (11 West Grand Street) and North Elizabeth (1180 North Avenue). The North Elizabeth station is limited to stops at peak times (rush hour) so you want to go to the 11 West Grand Street location where trains stop every 40 minutes. You want to ride the Northeast Corridor Line. Buy your tickets at the station BEFORE you board the train as it is $5 cheaper than buying them onboard, otherwise, you can pay the conductor. Take the train to Manhattan (1 hour ride) and get off at New York Penn Station. Here is the line map:

http://www.njtransit.com/rg/rg_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=LineDetailsTo&selLine=NEC

As you can see, Elizabeth is not all that many stations away from Penn Station. The fare will be around $6.75 one way per adult and $3 for children. Kids 4 and under can ride for free. The train takes anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes to get to Penn Station.

Once you are at Penn Station you can do one of the walking tours. The trains will run all day and until the wee hours of the morning, so it is possible to take in a Broadway show. Look for discounted tickets online prior to going and you will likely be able to get the show of your choice. You might use this site: http://www.broadway.com

Let me warn you that Penn Station serves 1000 people per every 90 seconds, - it is the busiest train station in North America and it can feel quite overwhelming. It would be best to hold hands with Sakari at all times until you get out of the crowd of people a couple of blocks from the station. At the same time, it is an incredible experience. Just in case, I would put your husband's cellphone in Sakari's backpack so that if you somehow become separated, you can call each other. I would tell Sakari, that if she gets separated from you, then she should stop at the nearest street corner and read the street sign for both streets and call you on the phone or if you have realized she is not with you, you will call her. She should stay where she is until you come for her. Tell her not to move even if she sees you on another corner of the street. She can tell you on the phone: "Mom, I'm right across the street, look left" or "Mom, you are diagonally across from me." Tell her, she must stay still so you can come to her. Then it will be easy for you to find her again (even if you have to look at all 4 corners of the intersection.) But hopefully, this scenario will never occur as you will be holding hands. It is just good to have a plan, just in case. If Sakari can't read well enough to read the street sign names, tell her to read the letters to you. It is useful, btw, to use the walking GPS on your smart phone to navigate the streets and get to wherever you want to go. Or you could book a sightseeing tour with a company such as this:

http://newyorktours.onboardtours.com/about/

or this:

https://www.manhattanwalkingtour.com

of this company which you pay what you think the tour was worth:

http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-york-tours/

The first company starts the tour at

W 53rd & 7th Ave

New York, NY 10019

Penn Station is at:

390 7th Ave.

New York, NY 10001

So you would grab a cab from Penn Station or walk 1.1 miles NE on 7th Ave to meet your tour. Or you could even get a tour company to meet you at Penn Station.

The advantage of a tour company is that they can skip the line and get you into various places immediately with little to no waiting at all AND they already know where they are going so you don't have to self-navigate. Because of the large volume of tickets they purchase they also have discounts for tickets at the various sights so it is usually a bit less expensive to enter the sights than if you did it on your own. Because they know how long each thing takes, they can set the pace for the day but make sure you see all you want to see. Skipping the line is important because otherwise you spend you day waiting in line an hour or more at each sight which really cuts into how much you can see in a day. This is actually very similar to the tours you take when on a Med cruise. Typically you take the train from the port into the city and the tour guide meets you at the train and you do a combination of walking, riding in cabs or the bus to see the sights! Without a doubt New York City/Manhattan is very different from any other US city, so it is sort of like being in a foreign country when you visit. It is both awe inspiring and chaotic. Really it's a city of contradictions with so much to see and do it is just an amazing experience.

So either do some research about exactly what you want to see and put together a plan to walk around Manhattan using a GPS on your phone or hire a tour company to do it for you - whichever you are more comfortable with. The other thing is to consider whether or not you want to buy a City Pass. This site has a great explanation of these:

http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-york-city-passes-which-one-is-the-best-to-buy/

If you decide to DIY, then you would do a combination of walking, taxis, buses and the subway to get around Manhattan. If you want to see the Statue of Liberty, but not necessarily pay to go in it, then you might think about taking the Staten Island Ferry - which is free! If you do this with a tour guide, they will explain the history of the statue, or you could just read up in advance. Even if you never go in any of the sights, there is still so much to do and see, you can have just an amazing day there. Whenever I had clients in Manhattan, I would walk around as soon as I got off work just amazed at the place. So don't feel you have to spend lots of money to see things. You don't have to go to the top of the Empire State Building or the crown of the Statue of Liberty. There are lots of things like the Staten Island Ferry which are free and even just walking around in Central Park or the streets is so fascinating.

The only other thing to keep in mind is how to find public restrooms: http://www.nycgo.com/articles/public-restrooms

To use a restaurant restroom, you need to be a customer of the restaurant.

I'm not going to bother addressing most of what you said, but the hotels they might be staying at are not near either the Elizabeth or North Elizabeth NJ Transit rail stations.

with so many driving in, Newark sounds good for you and stay in a hotel in New Jersey. Then someone can grab you guys and take you to the pier?

Last time I checked parking at the pier was $35(?) a day plus taxes. That is why we take a car and split the costs. By the time I pay gas, tolls and parking, I might as well have a designated driver:)

The Sunday to Sunday itinerary really cuts down on traffic though.

Good luck with the planning and just tell your work you need to address this terrible cruise addiction you have:rolleyes:

Parking at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal is $40 per day, and has been for quite some time. All taxes are included...and have always been included in the daily rate regardless of what it was at the time for as many years as I can remember.

If you flew into Newark, you could tour Ellis Island - definitely could spend an entire afternoon there. Last time I was there you could also connect on one of the boats to the Statue of Liberty.

Thanks. We haven't decided which flight we will take yet. So, that will depend on if there's any time for anything at all.

Sakari is a dinosaur FREAK! She can name them all. She amazes me. What do most little girls get for Christmas from their big sister? A full collection of the hard rubber dinosaurs complete with a mat and mountains and volcanos to build a dinosaur valley...yep, that's what she got 2 Christmas's ago. :p

If you want to go to Manhattan, you might choose to come from Newark Airport and the instructions and costs are here including luggage storage options: http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/newark-airport-to-manhattan/

A little confused about the luggage storage options? We would have our luggage in our hotel room.

YIKES...that is way too expensive. I'm seeing tickets for over $200+. That will never work for us. Just too expensive. We are paying a lot for the cruise to begin with. :(

Oh oh oh oh...my. Now I'm completely freaked out. The whole part about holding hands (which I would do no matter what), it being so busy, the amount of people, getting separated and so on. That would completely freak me and Sakari out. I would lose it. Like seriously. This is definitely a place I would avoid at all cost. This is probably what my oldest son was talking about when he came back from New York several years ago. He said he would never go back because of the amount of people and the transportation. I think I would have a meltdown.

I really really appreciate the time you took to give me all this information and I know that your intentions are well, but this actually did nothing but make me feel like I want to avoid this entire area like the plague. There's just way too many of us on this trip and with 2 little ones, 1 that is a little unruly and hard to keep track of, this is the last place we need to be. I think we'll stay over in NJ and keep our butts at our hotel until it's time to go to the port and then hope for the best. :o

I think everyone is going to be coming in at the same time in the same vehicle, so this should cut down everyone being spread out. I think we are still flying though.

I do know it's $40 to park a day.

Good to know that Sundays are the least amount of traffic. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Work already realizes my addiction and I've only been with them 9 months and on my 3rd vacation. LOL

Two things:

Your review was fantastic, as always. My inlaws just got off the Sun and were raving about it. NCL hasn't been on my radar for a while now, but I'm starting to rethink that.

The other thing is how this thread has shifted to a NYC cruise. I'm so happy to read all the tips and hints. I'm saving what I can get from here as our bucket list cruise is to cruise out of NYC and spend a few days there first exploring that great city.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for the comments. I'm glad you like them.

We had a blast on the Sun...but then again we had friends on there and we had some of the best port plans ever so that MADE the cruise.

I know...shifting to the NY cruise, but I'm really grateful for the help. I'm getting that we would definitely have to spend a few days there in order to really do anything AND not with the entire family. That's just going to be too hard.

Great review as always Kim!!

When will you sail the new Escape?!!

Thank you.

I'm not sure. Last time I looked, the prices were crazy (as I'm sure they will be for awhile). But I will definitely be checking again some time next year just in case. :D

I don't blame Sakari for freaking out on the jet ski. The last time I jet skied in Bermuda we hit a wave, went flying up in the air and came slamming down on the jet ski. I got a compression fracture in my coccyx. Yes, I broke my butt on a jet ski. (was laid up for a year)

Yikes! That sounds incredibly painful. Hope you are all better now. I bruised my tailbone once and to this day, it still hurts when sitting on a hard surface for too long. I know... TMI.

Thanks. We haven't decided which flight we will take yet. So, that will depend on if there's any time for anything at all.

This all sounds like a vacation in itself and a lot of work.

I was actually thinking about the visit for you, your husband and Sakari - thought you might have some spare time while the others drove in. Anyway, maybe next time because I'm certain once you see it, you will WANT to visit as it is absolutely AMAZING!

Yea, if it was just us, I would try to plan something while there. The flight we were looking at arrives about the same time they would arrive in town as well. Kendra and her family just took a trip about 1 hour away from the port and she is now wishing they would have drove on into NY to visit and she said she'd love to go there for a "getaway" and explore or take a few days before or after the cruise to go over to NY. With her son, I'm sure she'd be 1 less child. He's just NOT the type of kid to take to a place like this.

Thank you very much for your review! It was a great read!

It brings back memories of our trip on the Breakaway to Bermuda. It also brought back memories of Kev. He was scheduled on our Breakaway cruise before he passed.

for the main course...sakari had....a pb&j and chips. Only at the mdr on ncl will you see someone eating a pb&j for dinner! What is this world coming to? I just think it's so weird. I would never feed my child that for dinner...but i guess it's her vacation and when on vacation, i let her eat whatever pleases her for some reason. Still doesn't seem like dinner to me and i'm sticking to that!

I found this very amusing. We had PB&J (DW and I) the other night for dinner in our dining room. Can't say we do this often, but we are in the midst of a kitchen renovation, so easy meals like that are a lifesaver instead of eating out every night. :)

By any chance, do you still have the part of the daily that shows the times for the various dinning venues for the Dawn? If you could post a sample of that, or two (sea day vs port day) that would be great!

Thanks!

Brad

Kim,

I wanted to point out some cheap options:

http://www.parksleepfly.com

Put in Newark as your city.

The hotels near the Newark airport are OK.

Also, it is possible to park at the Manhattan port with a reservation for as low as $24 per day:

https://www.parkjockey.com/cruise-parking?gclid=CjwKEAjwiZitBRCy0pb3rIbG9XwSJACmuvvz-81FeOL_TUn46wh0kpRcaF7u9yZlMLjt3LL9-vb5GxoCb3fw_wcB

The only issue is that when you return from your cruise you will have to take a taxi from the port to the place where the vehicle is parked after the cruise (just a few blocks away.)

Thanks for the info.

I tried the first link and they did not provide any rooms that would allow 5 people booked in them. They were only saying 2 people. Also the prices were more expensive that what I have currently found so far with allowing up to 6 in a room with a separate room and living room. So I guess that's out.

My daughter did find the place you posted for the cruise parking. However, I'm sure it's a different amount to park the vehicle they are taking there, but I will have her call to verify if they can even park something that big there.

Thanks for the information. I truly appreciate all the effort you have put in to helping me out.

Kim, I just wanted to get your personal opinion on the Comfort Inn you stayed at in Dorchester.

I am originally from the Boston area and had made arrangements to stay for the 2 pre-cruise nights before our Dawn cruise, as I didn't think it was a bad area, even though the physical address is in Dorchester.

Now I am reading from people who still live in the Boston area that it might not be a wise choice. Your opinion please?

Dorchester contains a lot of smaller neighborhoods, some peacefully residential and others not so nice. Why don't you let Kim share her impressions since she actually stayed at the hotel in question? Posting every crime in a huge area doesn't help at all.

Thank you !!! These are the types of posts that are making me nervous. If it was just for me - I would use Hotwire or Priceline and get a 4 or 5* downtown for less money than we're paying for the Comfort Inn. Unfortunately, that is not an option for 15+ rooms. As you can see from my signature, this is a group of veterans, most of whom are on very fixed incomes, so it's a fine line between nice and affordable.

When I lived in Boston, this particular area was not bad and was actually considered a part of Boston. We're not planning on staying at the hotel very much, as I was able to organize a very reasonably priced day trip for our only full day in Boston, so we're basically just there to sleep.
