Got a notification of an upgrade...Ah, NO.

Guarantees would get a cabin equal to what they booked or higher, within the category. Shredie is right though... Upgrades within the category booked could still happen... but for an ocean view to balcony.... upsell.

Makes sense. So no more 10-category meta upgrades on a guarantee like I got once years ago...

If you need a handicapped/disabled cabin - always mark this no-upgrade. They have been known to upgrade people to non-disabled cabins!

Though - I have never heard of window suite cabins being upgraded to suite cabins with balconies.

My TA tried, and the computer wouldn't let her mark it No Upgrade. I trust her, she knows I rely on her sight to do my bookings-too chicken due to Legal Blindness to do them myself, but I ALWAYS research comprehensively, before arriving with requirements itemised, so her work is pretty easy. She laughed last week, "It's just as well for my job you won't do your own bookings!" Not in a nasty way, and the staff are looking forward to my reports on the Cruise and the Melbourne hotel which has the best Handicapped Accessible Bathroom I've ever seen. Looks like the building was gutted to a shell, then rebuilt inside rather than modified. I'm a Carpenter's daughter so know a little about renovation.

In approximately 5hrs and 15 minutes by my clock, it will be 64 weeks to Embarkation Day. Each week that passes is a milestone for me.

Perhaps Princess uses a different system for Australia, but US travel agents can definitely mark a booking "no upgrade" in their computers. There is always a chance your TA isn't familiar with the proper code or procedure. You might politely ask her if she can or did phone Princess to do it for her :)?

I would hate to have you disappointed after looking forward to the location you chose. Perhaps there is someone reading this who can speak with authority on Australian booking procedures?

We're usually happy enough to stay in the room we booked. My wife pretty carefully selects them. We've been under the buffet and casino (different cruises) and it wasn't a good experience. The buffet starts making noise around 5:30a rolling cars around. The casino hits the other end and there was a smokey smell.

We always try to find rooms with rooms above and below ours and we're happy to stay there.

are you contacted by phone or by email with an offer (with an expiry date?)...

I have received two Princess upsell offers at this point. Both initially arrived in the form of an email. I was instructed to, if interested, call a certain phone # and leave a voicemail. I did, and received call backs within a few hours in both cases. Princess states that upsell voicemails are returned in order. I believe an expiration date was given, but I imagine desirable cabins would be long gone by then.

When I got the call back, I was told both times that the cabin I was offered was the best available for upsell, and was given the cabin # being offered. It was presented to me as "take it or leave it", with no other cabin option. I believe other CCers have said they were given a choice of cabins for upsell, however.

We had a cabin marked "do not upgrade" on a cruise two years ago on the Royal, and it was upgraded. We were traveling with DD and son in law and two grandchildren and had three inside cabins in a row, two of which were connecting. We found out about it when we went to "our cabin" and someone else's name was on the door. After going down to Passenger Services, nearly in a panic, we found out we were upgraded to a handicapped balcony cabin very close by.

Of course it was a wonderful surprise in the end. My TA was not informed and no one emailed me or the TA. All I can figure is that it was a last minute cancellation that worked to my benefit.

I am curious how you find out about the upgrade if you don't have a travel agent. Do they call or email??

They should notify you by either/both.

However in the past as noted above we were upgraded and never contacted.

So you just don't know. I think when you have a TA thats not familiar with Princess and new to you sometimes they don't forward the notice and the deal expires and you end up sol. :(

Although we do use a travel agent, on our previous 5 day Princess cruise to Mexico last December we were informed of the upgrade to a mini suite when we arrived at the pier in Ft Lauderdale. It was a handicapped mini suite with a large bathroom. We loved it!

This information is available on the personalizer up to sailing day in the bag tags/boarding pass/travel summary tabs. ;)

We book early as Dudette needs an accessible cabin. Out TA always marks no upgrade, however on 2 cruises we have been upgraded but in both cases it was to higher class accessible cabin. Obviously we would have a huge issue if we were upgrade to a non-accessible cabin.

A few years ago we were upgraded from an oceanview to a balcony on 14 (I believe). We didn't really want to be that high, so I called and was able to move our upgraded balcony to one on Caribe with the larger balcony because it was the same category as the one on 14. That was very nice. We love the upgrade fairy.

On our last cruise we got an upsell offer that we accepted. That was an expensive upsell in the long run since we now prefer the mini-suites, but I think that's Princess' goal! :p

Hello!

If I marked our cabin as "No Upgrade," how does that affect the possibility of an upsell offer? I booked M101 (category DZ) for an upcoming 10-day Southern Caribbean on Royal and was afraid that they would upgrade us to category DW, which I don't think has the oversized balcony. I did a lot of research on the boards and am comfortable with the balcony being unable to be used at times due to high winds.

I'd love to hear your thoughts/advice on this.

Thanks,

Holly

The great thing about upsells is that, if offered, you can accept or not. If an upsell is offered, it would be to a suite.

Did you mark it META upgrade only?

This means would except one from one cat to another.

IE: inside to ocean view/ocean view to balcony/balcony to mini/mini to a suite etc.

Our cruise has been sold out for months! What are my chances of being offered an upgrade or an upsell?

I see you are sailing on 9/6. There will always be a few cancellations at the last minute due to illness, job demands, etc., that can create upsell opportunities. I wouldn't count on it, however.

Have a great cruise, in any case!

Slim and None and Slim has left town. Seriously, if your cruise is sold out, then all the rooms are sold and there is no openings to offer you.

Actually you would be surprised at how much movement there is after final even if the cruise is sold out. Our PC cruise has been sold out for over a year.

People cancel for a variety of reasons and you would never even know it. Princess keeps cabins out of inventory and has the whole process down to a science. After all they do it week in and week out.

Almost all Princess cruise sell out.

I think you're more likely to receive a "downsell". You may be asked to change your cabin and get some OBC in order to accommodate families.

Slim and None are definitely going on this cruise!
