Balcony Smokers on Allure

Recommended Posts

Guest services has a list of smoking complaints from neighboring balconies and they will fine you for the first offense, second offense off the ship. Ships should not sell cigarettes and any bought on board should be confiscated by security at check in.

Really

so because some choose to break the rules everyone should have their cigarettes taken. How in the world did you come up with that !!

I pay for my cruise (normally JS or above) I work hard to do that and i STICK TO THE RULES. I only smoke in designated areas but yo think that my cruise which costs upwards of £6000 should dictate that i can't have cigarettes on the ship.......I don't think so, if you are that bothered then report the rule breakers don't dictate to everyone else.

I won't police the ship, but the lady in the balcony above ours was smoking, I only noticed because I smelled it and the smoke came into our cabin. I called the front desk. The smoking stopped immediately.

Oh we were in Cozumel two weeks ago on the Caribbean Princess. We waved at your ships. :)

For years airlines had a smoking section on planes. Now smoking is banned completely. Cruise lines will be next to ban smoking completely and confiscate, by security at check in, smuggled cigarettes. Smokers will adjust and these threads will be unnecessary. Win, win situation.

Apples and oranges. Ships are at sea for days at a time with no chance to "hop off for a smoke". Additionally the challenge of piecing together a 100% non smoking crew makes this idea a non-starter, at least until the percentage of the population that smokes drops to near zero.

There is a huge difference between an enclosed airplane where the air gets recirculated, and there are oxygen lines running all of the place, than on top of an open-air cruise ship. I can't see any outright bans happening, because it would have to be the cruiselines themselves doing it, which would alienate tons of customers to go to other lines that have not done it yet. It is not just the smokers, but anybody with a group of people with one smoker would go to that other line. The airlines did not ban it, it was the FAA that did, and since pretty much no ships spend their entire time in US territory, there is really not overall authority to ban it industry wide.

I am not a smoker, and don't condone smoking on balconies, as it does carry, either the smell or the smoke itself. I don't want to smell it and I don't want it blown into my door if I happen to have it open. It is was not against the rules, I would probably not book a balcony cause I don't care for the smell after having grown up in a smoking household.

The cruise line could easily make one side of the ship balconies be smoking if enough people asked for it and it was not truly a safety issue. Like how some hotel rooms are smoking, and some are not (most are not nowadays).

Magic 8 ball says "highly unlikely". But I do think your post is funny. At least that's how I read it.

Don't back pedal so hard, you'll sprain your ankle.

Speaking of back pedaling and actually 'breaking' ankles, in a past smoking thread, you claimed that the designated Smoking Areas were not designated. Now I see in this thread you have back pedaled enough to identify them for what they really are. :D

I guess you as an activist anti-smoker can only dream about this to come to fruition. But it'll never happen. The airline industry does not even confiscate cigarettes, pipes, or cigars as of today. The Cruise industry will never ever stoop to your wanted gastepo type actions.

I don't recall that, but if I made a mistake it was just that, a mistake.

I have zero issue with smokers using designated areas.

Perhaps you can find the multiple threads where I have also called for creations of indoor smoking lounges as well as expansion of outdoor areas to include more comfortable furniture, coffee service, snacks, etc.

I'm not the one calling for a cigarette ban on ships; I think that is unrealistic and won't happen.

I think the cruise lines should provide comfortable and inviting areas for smokers to use, and I think smokers should be courteous enough and gracious enough to stick to those designated areas.

Thank you for this post. It appears that we do indeed have common ground. I do believe that the cruise line industry has a difficult line to walk to cater to all their customers. As a cigar smoker, I don't smoke on my balcony. Having said this, I appreciate the space given to me to smoke & enjoy something I pleasure. Having said this, the anti-smoking crowd that wish for all smoking to be void are simply being unreasonable to say the least. I laugh at those that walk through a designated area for smokers, all waving their arms and holding their noses. When they enter my space, they get what they deserve. If they don't like the smell, the so called health risk from a whiff :D, or the so call fire hazard :D , don't walk through it!

This. :)

Thank you Pookill17 for being a nice person.

It's really not a matter of being nice (although I like to think I am!). I don't have to like the rules but I do have to obey them. I live with a non smoker and have learned through the years to adjust to the changing environment. Yes, smokers and non smokers pay the same price to enjoy their balconies. So...watch the sunsets, the runners in port, enjoy a meal. I know I will. And when I need a smoke I'll go to the closest designated area. I could probably use the exercise anyway!

Magic 8 ball says "highly unlikely".

A few years ago I would have agreed with you, Carnival gave up on the smoke free Paradise, and the ships started rolling out with many private balconies which greatly alleviated the smoking issue in outdoor public areas. But when you look at how all of the lines have moved in concert over a very short time, kind of tough to see how we aren't on a trajectory where cigs will be sold by the lines in designated areas, at an inflated cost, and smoking materials brought from shore will be treated like booze.

In some ways I would rather they ban of smoking from the casino and allow it on the Balcony. There is no where for the smoke to go when you can't open a window and I can barely walk through the casino sometimes because the air is so full of smoke, even when it's not packed with smokers. It just lingers in the air.

I have only had one problem on a cruise with smokers in a balcony cabin next to us. They were both chain smokers though and out there constantly. Eventually I just tried to avoid going out there when they were out there. They also played loud music. I tried calling once to complain, but it didn't help much. They just went back to it a couple of hours later.

This past full when we were in Disney World there was someone smoking on a balcony above the Savannah at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. That seriously upset me because there are animals all around us. When I called to complain they acted like it wasn't a big deal. That upset me a lot more there are zebras and giraffes that would get really close to the balconies. I can only hope they didn't throw their cigarette butts out on the savannah.

"That many people"?!? The OP witnessed people on 5 balconies smoking. Allure has 2,222 outside cabins. OP could see only one side of the ship which means 1,111 cabins were visible. There was smoking on 5 of those 1,111 balconies. That means that people were smoking on less than 1/2 of one percent of the balconies!

I'm wondering what percentages have to do with this at all, it's a rule and therefore zero tolerance, does RC state that 1% is acceptable? Answer: NO! Can RC police every cabin? Answer: NO! But for the respect and safety of others please don't smoke on the balconies.

As a nonsmoker (x) it wouldn't bother me in the least. But I'll stand behind the magic 8 balls answer as it is just about as accurate as your assumption. Time will tell. ;o)

The US government would have to ban it on ships as they have done in public places in the US. If ships want to dock here, they must comply with our laws. After all, foreign airlines comply with smoking bans even though those aircraft are owned by foreign governments.

Smokers can always get off at foreign ports and smoke if those governments allow it. Smokers are a huge burden on society. Having smoking areas on ships enables their addictive behavior.

They have no authority to do that. It is completely different to ban in an enclosed area than to do it in an open air environment in international waters.

I'm still waiting for any smoker to tell me why I have to compromise on allowing / scheduling time with a smoker on a balcony on a ship where the policy is no smoking on balconies.

politeness/courtesy/love of your fellow man............

If someone is being impolite, discourteous and showing no love for their neighbors by smoking on their balcony, why in the world should I feel any love for them?

Nope.

That "love" will be by way of the $250 fine I initiate by reporting it.

Smoking is banned in many open air public spaces in the US.

Since you are an expert on maritime law,, you should inform the US coast guard they had no authority to investigate the Anthem for sailing into a hurricane in international waters.

I'm a non smoker and for the record it doesn't really bug me much unless they're blowing smoke in my face or sitting within a few feet.

I would not say smokers are a huge burden in relation to other things, I assume health is your bases for your silly comment. I would say obesity is the largest burden, trillions are spent on medical costs for things that a healthy diet could solve. Abuse of prescription pain meds are out of control in this country, I'd wager that more than one person you know is secretly addicted. Alcohol is also a huge burden. My point? Just because it's legal or not your personal pet peeve, doesn't mean it's not a real issue.

A resounding YES. Maybe if smokers had places where it was "legal" to smoke, they would stick to those areas. Indoors is especially confining and all of them wouldn't be gathering in the casino en masse. Better outdoor areas will still have non-smokers complaining when they walk by.

The US government has not banned smoking in public places in the US. Some states have, and some cities have, but not the federal government.
