New Orleans: How far is the NCL port from the Harrah's casino/hotel?

I have a 'free' CAS cruise.

I also have a $100 folio credit at any Caesar's casino property.

folio credit = takes care of charges to your hotel room (ie: hotel restaurant).

I also have, at minimum, discounted hotel rates at the property, if not comped.

so I thought of killing 2 birds with 1 stone and going on the Dawn for Western Caribbean.

my goal:

fly in the day b4 the cruise and stay at Harrah's hotel.

go on cruise.

stay at harrahs hotel and fly out the next day.

1) how far away is the port from the hotel?

2) what do you think of my plan?

thx

Looking it up on a map, it appears to be only a 10 minute walk but I'd check with the hotel, they may even offer a free shuttle to the cruise terminal...

Good luck

PS, we almost always come in a day or 2 early at any port and stay a day after... just adds to the fun and relaxation ;)

"As the crow flies" Harrah's is close to the cruise terminal. But not quite comfortable walking distance especially if you have heavy bags so grab a cab or shuttle. It's only half a mile, but keep in mind that NOLA is not famous for keeping up the roads and occasional sidewalks.

Your plan sounds great:)

We cruise out of NOLA at least once a year and stay at Harrah's pre and post cruise. Very easy to get to the cruise port from Harrah's lovely hotel (and we are retirees.) If you can walk a couple of blocks with your rolling luggage it's not bad at all. After the cruise the hotel will hold your luggage until your room is ready.

Harrah's gives us free limo to and from airport so that is easy too. They used to give us limo to the port but being able to do that for free has been a cutback in last couple of years. However, we've found it so easy to walk that it's more enjoyable than planning to meet a car & driver.

If you are staying the day before you could take a walk over to the port to gauge the distance. If you think it won't work for you it's easy to get a taxi to the pier or you could ask the concierge about a car service and it's cost. Sometimes they will know of another couple that might share a car cost with you.

Great Plan! We did it last time we sailed out of NOLA.

The morning of the cruise, we walked down to the river (couple of blocks) and down to the fence of the port (couple of blocks) to take a few pre-cruise pictures of our ship. Took less than 15 minutes and stopped for some beignets at the Café Du Monde Coffee Stand port-side in the mall.

That being said, you can't enter the port from the waterfront. Highly recommend catching a taxi from the hotel,,, you need to go down the waterfront at least a mile to get to the port entrance (at least via taxi).

You don't have to walk the long way around that the taxis follow. You can cut through to the Port & ship by the parking lot at far-right side of the Riverwalk mall. (Facing the river/mall/ship go the far right end.) This is at the opposite end of the mall from the Hilton. It's very close to Fulton Street parking and that is leading you right to Harrah's hotel.

They actually have porters picking up luggage for the ship right by that parking lot at the end of the mall. You then cross over the street-car tracks (look both ways!) and you will be at the building for check in. There will be lots of porters and TSA agents to direct you to the correct entrance.

Again, if you have trouble rolling your luggage there are lots of taxis available. So whatever you are comfortable with. Have a great time:D

Great information. We are driving in from Killeen,Tx and staying at Harrahs day before the cruise. Are we allowed to leave our vehicle at the Harrahs parking lot while gone for 7 days on the cruise?

That would probably depend on your status (SevenStar? Diamond?) with Harrah's/CET properties. We fly in, but I have heard of some parking there. If you are getting your room at Harrah's comped or discounted you could ask your host. If you don't have a host you could call and ask for the host on duty.

I do this every year. Harrah's is a couple of blocks from the ship. I personally wouldn't walk, I take a taxi and if you get a good taxi driver, they know the back way in.

We have done it twice, staying at Harrah's both before and after cruise. Although it is walkable, it was more than worth it to us to take a less than 10. cab ride.... Walking dragging all my crap was not even remotely in my game plan. But if you travel light it is walkable. You can also walk across the street from Harrahs and take the Riverwalk streetcar 1 stop and that will be right near the cruise terminal.

We have always walked to the port...the first time from the Marriot when Harrah's didn't have a room for us. That was a bit too far. But, on the last trip, we just rolled our luggage down Fulton Street (which by Harrah's is just a pedestrian mall) to Julia St. That is a total of about 6 blocks. There were employees on Julia St. to take our luggage. Pretty easy! Our next trip is out of New Orleans (a CAS deal) and Harrah's wasn't able to get us a room but that is another story. We still plan to walk to the port from our room.

Enjoy your travels!

So, just out of curiosity, has anyone actually tested whether or not Harrahs will allow you to leave your car while you're gone on the cruise? We're cruising on the Breakaway next February and are currently trying to figure out the best plan of attack. Thanks!

Haven't done it, but I'm going to guess if you are SevenStars, or perhaps Diamond with CET there is a better chance you can park for free.

If you have 'status' with them, would suggest you call and talk to the host on duty.

Only a few blocks. Not a difficult walk.

Yeah, be sure driver knows the simple route. When we went we stayed at Embassy Suites. Driver headed to main port entrance. Big mistake!! I was alone with luggage for six as rest of group were walking to ship. He ultimately dropped me off a couple blocks from, but I had a stack of luggage to deal with. Finally another cabbie saw my plight and stopped.

He was incensed the other guy didn’t know the quick way in. Took longer to load and unload at port than to get there.

We stayed at the Hilton Riverfront (courtesy of Harrah's who was full), which is basically kitty corner across the street from Harrahs. We walked through the mall to get to the cruise ship. Definitely walk-able, if you are okay with pulling your luggage and navigating escalators. Basically went from one end of the mall to the other. If I didn't know for sure that we could reach the cruise ship from the mall, I would have been very skeptical by the end of the walk!

Does Hilton Riverside let you leave your car for the week and/or have a shuttle to the port? Thank you!

Funny you mention the NOLA streets. I have fallen in the street with uneven street. Then ruined an expensive piece of Luggage when the Fulton garage shuttle could not drop us at port. The road was so bad it messed up a wheel and put a stop to rolling.

I wouldn’t want to walk from Harrah’s.
