drinking package - each adult have to purchase it - allure january 7 2018

i did buy it when it was $55 + tips b/c I was afraid they were going to do this and my friend drinks a couple glasses of wine a day and plans to bring a bottle with her and me take one on also. Then if the price went down I would have cancelled and rebooked or if it did not go down, I would have canceled and bought on the ship with my 30% D+ discount.

 

 

 

But now, I will just leave it alone since I have it and she doesn't. I am going to call 2 or 3 times and verify that if one person bought the pkg before this went in effect, the other person will not be forced to purchase it. If they don't grandfather in, then I will have to cancel and go to plan B. But hoping it doesn't happen.

 

 

 

I think most everyone that frequents CC knew it was coming. All future cruises where time limits were not out too far, I booked the DP. It still shows as 1 DP in my cruise Planner.

What I don't understand is this. I do not drink period. We travel with our adult daughter that requires 24hr care. My husband does drink a few beers during the day a cocktails in the evening. How can they force ME to buy a package that includes booze when I don't drink? And to add to it my daughter is and "adult" buy age but not ability or mental capacity. Certainly they are not going to require that I prove that to them. I believe that may be against ADA regulations.

I don't understand why it would be against ADA regs?

I was afraid this was going to happen! I figured they would wait until their "pilot" sailings were completed so I figured we had some time to buy the package. I am very upset they decided to enact this rule. Not having to be able to purchase for the package for everybody over the age of 21 in the room was one of the main reasons we were choosing RCL, but we may go with NCL now since they offer the drink package in the price already.

I was afraid this would happen. Sailing with my SIL in March and we both plan on purchasing the drink package.

 

Two other friends booked today. One bought the deluxe pkg and the other, who doesn't drink, purchased the soda package.

 

Majesty March 12, 2018

 

I can't access my reservation so I don't know what the cruise planner says.

There's only one sure way of having them change their policy, don't buy the package. They obviously feel that the increase in packages sold per cabin will be greater than those who will stop buying it. Personally, I can't imagine the amount of sharing is so great so as to require this change.

I agree. It isn't 'sharing' that's the issue, it's the profit margins that they like & want. But it's their decision to charge it, it's our decision to buy it. We have always purchased it on our 7 day cruises, but w/ a 14 day cruise coming up, I'm not going to drop $1800 on the Deluxe Pkg. of which, close to $300 is for gratuity. They are kidding themselves if they think that pouring some drinks for 14 days is worth $300. Now would be a good time to buy some stock in the company that makes the Rum Runners. :D

Agree with profit margins , sharing won't be very rampant as it's cumbersome to pull it off during a vacation on a consistent basis .. but lost me at gratuity for 14 days .. so the longer one works the lesser they should get paid ?

18% for each & every drink is extremely generous for two weeks. I guess my thoughts are that it takes away our option. If I receive great service I tend to even leave an extra cash tip. But when given slow service or service w/o a smile etc. they still get a generous tip. I can see this happening more & more now that most will have a alcohol pkg. $1800 for two people to drink is very close to the price of a balcony. It's pretty steep.

 

I'm going to shop our cruise w/ other lines adding the $1800 to see what we find.

It is about sharing, at least in part. If people share, and steal they lose money. This prevents at least some sharing, which they figure will make more money. Not sure why you think that this being to make them more money means it isn't also about stopping theft (which costs them money). They are the same goal.

Still don't understand the fixation on gratuity when it's a percentage of the price .. for the 7 days it's 7*55 =385 , gratuity is around 70.. to say that you wouldn't buy the package for the extra 70 doesn't make sense to me .. as to shopping around and cruising with other companies , do it .. the only way companies ever change their behavior is when they stop getting easy money

It sounds like no one in your cabin wants to buy a package. That's great. That's perfect. NO ONE HAS TO BUY A PACKAGE. But if one adult in the cabin buys it, all the adults in the cabin must purchase. But since apparently no one in your cabin wants the package, you are good to go. Relax. Have a great cruise.

I'll wait for discounts before I buy. If no discounts, Hello Rum Runners!

So with regard to "rum runners" which I'd never heard of until now (had to google) would the same apply to a plastic wine cask? Do you think they are on to this.. do they scan you for these things on your body?

The more drinks you get on your package - i.e., the more you work to "get your money's worth", the less per drink your servers receive.

 

Pretend that you only drink alcoholic beverages on your package. Pretend that you only drink mango daquiris. Pretend that they cost $13 each, the upper limit of the package. 18% of $13 is $2.34.

 

Pretend that you drink 7 of these each day, to be sure that you are "getting your money's worth".

 

You paid $9.90 for that day's drinks with your package purchase.

 

But 7 x $2.34 is $16.38.

 

You have gotten a bargain. Or, to look at it another way, your servers have been cheated out of $6.48

I sail in 11 days on Majesty and was going to perhaps buy on board, because I am not sure if I will have a casino drink card yet or not. sailing with my best friend who doesn't drink...I wonder if they will just let me buy it and not her as well...hmmm...

 

Im also sailing on a 9 day on the Navigator in 2018 and my husband doesn't drink at all, so I guess I'll miss out on the package deal there as well. NCL/Celebrity cruises with the drink perk included is looking more appealing for the future
