Why does Carnival make it so hard....

to do a name change a week before? Really? I understand its in the terms and policy's but I would think they would rather make the extra money from having another person spend on Drinks, shore excursions, spa, casino etc rather than let it go empty.

I am not worried about what i spent on the cruise bc i have insurance (not with Carnival) but why should i have another person pay the full price, plus have them not give me any refund? Sounds like a good deal for them.

What am i not understanding?

What you aren’t understanding are the terms you agreed to with your booking.

Its a business, not a charity. It might not make sense to you (and it likely still wont) but they have very long-standing policies that are well published so it apparently makes sense to them (which is all that matters).

People only complain about policies when they find they arent on the beneficial end of them. Funny how that happens, isnt it?

Carnival has a deadline of when they have to turn the passenger list over to the authorities. They don’t get any leeway so they can’t give leeway to passengers.

That deadline is on the day of sailing, not a week before.

Short answer to OP's question is that Carnival can because they make the rules.

Lots of salty people who clearly did NOT understand my post. Except for Dallasguy. I was wondering why they would not want to make more money off the misc on board items versus nothing. Oh and yes they have until the day of to submit names so mosaicmom you posted wrong info. Geez do people make this up?

To StolidCruiser- i said its terms and policy if you can read. Businesses usually want to make money and they won make money this way unless some sucker pays another fee for something that was paid for. I have no worries as i get 100% refund. I just was asking for another perspective and got a bunch of know it all comments.

OP

I have had someone have to bail 3 days before sailing. Another family member was more than willing to step in but the cruise line said no, sorry too late. The sailing maifest was already submitted to HomeLand Security.

Even with the cruise line "rules" some other "rules" top those. I am thinking, may be wrong, but just thinking, the cruise line would LOVE to have a stand in sail and gain more revenue but HLS says NO.

Remember...ask someone older, back when you could show up at the pier and buy a cruise ticket in a no show cabin?

OP, not sure you want to hear facts or just need to vent. The reason they have penalties for late changes is it keeps everything normal. Before they had it people were holding rooms (which drove up pricing) then cancel for any reason, frequently right before the cruise. To specifically answer your question, name changes late in the game, while better than canceling prevent the game playing that cruisers would employ to get out of paying if it (the charge) was just for cancelations.

Early saver rates and their policies have dramatically enhanced stabile pricing and we are all better off for it being in place.

P.S. Do not post/reply if you disagree with me.

Fixed that for ya....

As to why is it difficult, you should be able to understand if they made it really easy, people would re-sell their cabin/booking to someone else......Carnival has valid reasons as to their policy.

You can still book a cruise the day of, if there is availability, you just have to call carnival,DHS needs the final manifest 60 minutes before sailing

It took a long time for the package to be really understood by everyone. Of course there are circumstances where it feels like it is just penalizing a client for nothing, but it really did go a long way to stabilizing prices. Cruising is better with it than without it. Glad to help.

Why even bother posting if you’re going to argue with all those who reply?

Exactly. In post #6 the OP claimed to have gotten a bunch of a bunch of smart replies. At that point, he/she had made half of the 6.

Carnival already has your money by the time you get to a week prior to sailing, so they don't have any interest in going out of their way to help people who make a bunch of changes last minute. Applying penalties deters people from making reservations, holding rooms, etc. and then cancelling at the last minute with zero loss to those that do it.

Another reason for Carnival, in particular, to not allow last minute changes, is that they submit the passenger manifest to their background check contractor to screen all passengers, and disallow certain passengers like RSO from boarding. This takes time.

Another reason, and there will be those that disagree, but it does not really make sense business wise. If they allow you to do changes at 7 days, then people will want 6, then 5, then 4 and so on. This then will open up another can of worms along the lines of ... if I can do a name change, why can I not cancel for a full refund.

Policies are based on a number of things, not just one, and how any changes will affect both the company as well as the cruisers. Fun or not, it is what it is and while the seemingly creation of revenue with drinks seems attractive, it is really not that much money when they look at what could be lost if they started making exceptions.

Hi Sunlite

While I can't change Carnival's rules for you. I was thinking that if you were booked in a cabin that can accommodate three people, you might be able to add a third person at a reduced third person rate, then have the second person cancel. As you say there is no out of pocket loss since you have insurance. Even if your cabin doesn't accommodate three people, you might be able to do a cabin change (if available) and accomplish the same task.

Don't know if this would work, but I would look into it.
