Sushi on 5 - Solstice.... can someone help?

We have about $60 OBC left (after booking excursions) and are looking at how to spend it….

I suggested a martini or 2 at the martini bar (we’d pay the difference from our classic beverage package) or a quick flirt at the casino….. but wife suggested Sushi on 5 one night for dinner

I’m confused how it works – on celebrities website it says from $27.40 NZ

Enjoy our a-la-carte menu of Japanese inspired cuisine when you dine at Sushi on Five. Our modern luxury take on authentic Japanese favorites. Handmade sushi rolls, fresh nigiri, topped with our fresh wasabi prepared table-side and homemade soy sauce. Book your reservation and secure the date and time you would like to dine. Once onboard, a $20 credit will be applied to the food portion of your bill. If your food order exceeds $20, the charges will be applied accordingly. This credit cannot be applied to the beverage portion ofyour bill.

So does this mean we can choose items from the menu that we like or do we have to spend a certain amount? Also there are drinks on their menu that are within the $9 classic beverage package – can we get these drinks as part of the classic beverage package, or do we have to pay for them seeing as it is at a specialty restaurant?

Any information would be helpful :)

Sushi on 5 is usually a la cate. You pay for each item you buy. Sometimes they offer an all you can eat for a flat rate on the ship. They are just giving you a $20 credit towards your final bill. I would wait and see what kind of deal you can get on the ship. We have been very successful in getting anywhere from 25% to 50% off nearly every time we have asked (for what ever specialty restaurant we are interested in). Sushi on 5 can be hit or miss as far as sushi goes. The appys are good, the noodles are good but the actual sushi isnt great. We eat a lot of sushi (in fact we will be going for some tonight) and we are unimpressed with the sushi and the sashimi. SO5 is never busy (usually empty) and they are always offering deals for it on board.

Your drink package is good in all the bars and restaurants. Some of the cocktail in SO5 are very good. The one with pear in it is very good and I also like the one with basil in it. yum!

I would agree the Sushi is in my opinion just ok. But on our last two cruises we tried the shrimp dynamite and a lobster with noodles dish which were lovely! We were offered a good discount and found it a nice change from the norm. Will go again next cruises! Dianne

We did Sushi at Five aboard Solstice in Jan. I booked reservations ahead of time before the cruise and paid $20pp.

The $20 is credited back to you when your dinner bill is calculated based on what you ordered.

When we got there, we were offered the all-you-can-eat option for $10 pp more which we took. And then we proceeded to eat all that we could!

Maybe a dumb question, but could you go into SO5 and just have a few drinks using your drink package? I have heard a few people talk about specialty drinks in SO5 that you can't seem to get anywhere else on the ship.

On every cruise I have been on lately, they have someone wandering around the ship trying to get people to sign up for Sushi on Five. On most cruises it doesn't seem to be very popular. But my point in mentioning this is that I would never, ever pay full price for it. When the bookings are low, the offers are high. Make sure to bargain. Another helpful hint - if you are on good terms with your maître d' in whatever dining area you use, ask him if he will do the negotiation for you - have had good success doing that.

good question, don't know. However if you get to know the bartenders at the World Class Bar (and they like you) they might make them for you. On my last Equinox cruise Igor would make them for me if they were not busy. The world class bar makes all the cocktails for SO5 but they are not supposed to give them to the customers at the bar. That's why you need to get to know them, they bend the rules a wee bit if they like you;):cocktail::tropical-drink:

Hi, they do a $30 pp all you can eat option (does not include drinks, can't help you with drink prices as we had the premium, but they were soooo good!)

We definitely did not eat enough to hit the $30 each mark, so next time, we just ate a la carte.

If you live somewhere with great, fresh sushi, this is not exactly the same, but it was pretty good in my opinion. We sat by a window, they opened the curtains to a beautiful view, & we had great service as there were only a few other people there. They had some sore of slider there that DH enjoyed so much he got it to go at lunch one day. Enjoy :)

$30 is easy to hit but it depends on what you're ordering. They charge $8 for 4 tiny pieces of sashimi. I could eat $30 in just sashimi quite easily. But if I were to order the noodles or even a couple of rolls I could never come close to $30 worth of food. That's why I prefer to just get a discount on the meal. We also like to go in for lunch rather than dinner on the sea days. We usually only spend $20 to $30 and get a nice quiet lunch away from the zoo in the buffet.

We ate there on our last cruise and wondered why we never ate there before! It was excellent! There are also some different drinks, one that was $14 and covered under the premium drink package, was excellent! Cant remember the name. We ordered a la carte and I believe our bill was under $50. And we were stuffed!

I've wondered the same thing.

We have gone in the middle of the afternoon and ordered as little as one roll to share or Nigiri and then several cocktails each. We have also debated going to order nothing food wise, but always felt guilty doing that. That said since they were not busy during the times we went they didn't seem to mind that we didn't order much food.

At home, we eat sashimi, but I wasn't thrilled with the quality on board, so we stuck with rolls... about 3 rolls total shared between us & we were stuffed. I think we also had miso soup but who knows? the drinks were excellent :)

Last year on Solstice we went to Sushi on 5 three times for lunch on sea days, each time paying a $20pp all you can eat price. We loved most of the appetisers - the gyoza were excellent, as was a spicy tuna option. The sashimi was OK, I've had better but it was reasonable enough, but we didn't like the sushi. The noodle soups were yummy.

Yes on Solstice now. Drinks are covered in S-on-5 with the premium package up to the limit.

The question wasn't whether or not drinks were covered.

We knew they were.

The question is - since we really won't be paying anything if we have the premium package - can we just stop for JUST a drink with no Sushi?

(Kind of treating Sushi on 5 as another bar instead of a restaurant)

We just returned from a cruise on the Summit and ate lunch there 5 times out of 7 days. The lobster ramen is delicious (large chunks of lobster), chicken ginger gyoza and "Kobe" sliders very good and the crispy shrimp tempura roll was my favorite.

Shrimp Tempura Roll and Baked Scallop Roll:

We also enjoyed one of the cocktails there - Asian Pear Smash (the alcohol content was pretty high and I mistakenly had 2 one day since they were so good and can see where the "smash" comes from) ;):

The drink list:

I would certainly go there and ask if you can just have drinks - they would likely welcome you, but if I went I would need to have the shrimp tempura roll too. :D

I agree on the sashimi, I've had it twice and both times it was not very good. Some of the fish had a weird texture like it had been frozen and thawed a few times. I wasn't all that impressed with the rolls either but nearly everything else I've tried was delicious. The pear smash and the Agave Sunrise are my favorite cocktails

Just stop by and ask them I guess.

  • 2 weeks later...

We are sushi people and simply love everything in SO5! Wait until you're onboard. You won't need a reservation and you can ALWAYS get a discounted all you can eat price. We usually go at least 3 times on each cruise. Service is wonderful and it's never crowded. I'm not 100% sure (my memory is not that great) but it may be open on embarkation day. A great way to stay away from the masses at the buffet.
