SpringsCruiser Posted May 11, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2018 We are sailing on June 14 on the Anthem out of Cape Liberty. Our departure is scheduled for 4 pm. How long does it typically take to get past the Statue of Liberty and any other interesting sights? We have 5:45 My Time dining scheduled but I am thinking we want to eat later so we don't miss seeing the sights as we depart. Thanks.
Clarea Posted May 11, 2018 #2 Share Posted May 11, 2018 Anthem does not normally go past the Statue of Liberty. The pier is south of the statue and the ship would have to go out of it's way to pass the statue. Every once in a while someone reports that a Captain decides to take the ship past the statue, but this is not the usual way the ship heads when it leaves the pier. Our experience on Explorer was that it took about 15 minutes to get to the Verrazano Narrows bridge.
danp Posted May 11, 2018 #3 Share Posted May 11, 2018 If you depart on time 4pm,you will be passing the status of Liberty in about 2k that you can for when you go under the Varazzano5 minutes, but go to the highest deck till you go under the Varazzano bridge, that is exciting. As for the statue going out you will see the statue on the port[left ]side

maryred Posted May 12, 2018 #5 Share Posted May 12, 2018 Though the ships from Cape Liberty rarely "go around the backway" to pull into the Hudson proper, on days when it is clear and little large marine traffic is present you can see the Statue (just not the island well) from the ship while it is in the terminal. John Reid Posted May 12, 2018 #6 Share Posted May 12, 2018 On our Independence Days cruise on Celebrity Summit last summer, Captain Kate circled Liberty before we headed out to open seas.
Maraprince Posted May 12, 2018 #7 Share Posted May 12, 2018 Just bring your binoculars to see the Statue! It is far, far in the distance. MARAPRINCE
AAA75 Posted May 12, 2018 #8 Share Posted May 12, 2018 As bob said, the ship doesn’t normally go that way. I would bring a long lens camera and go top desk. Our Anthem trip in January the Captain took us up as the ship was special. We stopped in FL 2 times for some special event.
Goofyfanatic Posted May 12, 2018 #9 Share Posted May 12, 2018 Wow I am so glad that I didn't know this prior to our cruise last year. I would have spent the whole first afternoon worrying that we wouldn't go past Liberty. That being said I seem to remember it wasn't much more of half an hour before we went past her and maybe enough half an hour before we under the bridge. We were late sitting so we were not too worried about the time.
champagne123 Posted May 12, 2018 #10 Share Posted May 12, 2018 Have cruised out of NJ many times...not once have we cruised past The Lady.
kenrad Posted May 12, 2018 #11 Share Posted May 12, 2018 I'm surprised any ship going in or out of Bayonne's port would circle up to the Statue of Liberty, seems like it would take time, and not to mention turning around in busy NY Harbor doesn't sound like something you would do unless you had to. This is where leaving out of the Manhattan Terminal on Carnival or Norwegian has a very nice advantage.

Our experience on Explorer was that it took about 15 minutes to get to the Verrazano Narrows bridge. No Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island. However, a couple of years ago, the Captain turned left and went up the Hudson where we saw all of the sights. What was even more impressive was the 360 turn and we were no more than 150 feet from Battery Park. Hoping we have the same experience on our Aug. sail. ib=

Conshydot Posted May 13, 2018 #14 Share Posted May 13, 2018 It depends on the harbormaster whether a Bayonne ship circles Liberty Island...or so I am told. We’ve cruised from Bayonne many times, and only once did we do the circle.

Rare BirdTravels Posted May 13, 2018 #16 Share Posted May 13, 2018 So,,, you don’t sail in front of the SOL, you still see her has you leave port. This is from our balcony on he Anthem with Manhattan in the background. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ridgecrest Posted May 13, 2018 #17 Share Posted May 13, 2018 On our September 2016 cruise the Captain announced that we had an honored guest aboard and that we will be sailing around the SOL. It was great to get shots of her without having to use my telephoto lens.
OACAggie Posted May 13, 2018 #18 Share Posted May 13, 2018 (edited) Anthem doesn’t usually go up towards the SOL as others have mentioned, but we were also on the same January cruise as AAA75 that did go up past SOL. We spoke with the Captain afterwards and he said it is only when they have time, the weather is good and marine traffic is light. We were lucky enough to get on the Northstar for the 1st “ride”. The view was awesome. It was our 1st time in the NYC area. Tried to post a pic from my phone, but not showing up. marci22 Posted May 15, 2018 #22 Share Posted May 15, 2018 We went past the Statue of Liberty last summer when we were on the Canada/NE itinerary, but that is unusual. We have sailed out of Bayonne many times and ime the ship is often running a little late for departure, and then it takes around 1/2 hour to get under the bridge. I think 5:45pm dinner should be enough time to see that but if you are worried maybe 6pm.

BEENSAILING Posted May 17, 2018 #25 Share Posted May 17, 2018 We like Port side balconies on Anthem specifically so we can see the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan Skyline as we leave Bayonne. Last time on her it was snowing and cold and we wore our winter jackets as we stood outside. Another fun view is from 270 going under the bridge.
