Smoking is permitted on one side of the Rotterdam casino. The side with the tables is smoke free. The Rotterdam has also added a smoke free area with approximately 30 slots that is 100 ft from the main casino. Smoking is also allowed on the starboard side of the ship just past the seaview bar on deck 9.

I'll suggest that the smoke-free area is a little bit of a misnomer on the Pinnacle Class ships.  Although there may not be active smoking is the entire casino, the second-hand smoke fills the entire casino as well as affecting some of the music walk area below.

Yup, I'll say it again, a smoke free section of a casino is like a "no pee" section in a swimming pool.

Let us know what ship and we'll give you an honest assessment of the second hand smoke.

Just off the NS, and I can honestly say that there was absolutely no hint of any drifting smoke on the non-smoking side of the Sea View pool area on deck 9 aft. And I was over there several times during our 7-day sailing.

I guess everyone else that smells the secondhand smoke throughout the Sea View pool area on the Pinnacle Class ships must be mistaken.  🤔

Zuiderdam---Smoking in Casino?

This should clarify ALL of your questions (from HAL site "Know Before You Go"):

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. No smoking of any kind will be permitted on any stateroom verandah.

Designated Smoking Areas

Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Zuiderdam

  • Sea View Bar area
  • Oak Room (Noordam only, including cigar and pipe smoking)

Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam

  • Sea View Bar area
  • Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players only and only when outside of 12NM from the Netherlands

Volendam, Zaandam

  • Sea View Bar area
  • Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players only and only when outside of 12NM from the Netherlands
  • Sports Deck, outside Crow's Nest

Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.

Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in staterooms or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas.

Any guest who smokes inside staterooms or on verandahs in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation and will risk being removed from the ship for repeated violations.

Holland America Line reserves the right at any time to modify the smoking policy onboard or alter the locations where smoking is permissible.

Yep.. ever heard of a 'self-fulfilled prophecy'? If you're convinced you're going to smell something on the non-smoking side, you probably will.

Which works very well with your position that the smell from the one, single smoking area on pinnacle ships permeates the entire ship on every deck. Sorry, just not the case..

It's absolutely laughable that there are people trying to argue this.  It only takes one lit cigarette to ruin that whole back deck area.  The wind doesn't steadily blow the smoke away from the port side.

Haha  Or is the self-fulfilling prophecy that you don't smell any smoke?  1 person that doesn't smell any smoke compared to many others that do.  I'll let the jury decide.

Enjoy your cruise

Enjoy your cruise

We absolutely enjoyed our cruise on NS, just finished Sat morning. I was up on deck 9 aft non-smoking side a lot during the cruise, and I never caught even a faint whiff of smoke there the entire week.

I'm happy for you and I believe you.  Unfortunately, many people experience a lot of second smoke in the nonsmoking side by the pool.  Please believe and accept the experiences of many other cruisers  in the non-smoking area by the pool.  Many cruisers experience a lot of second hand smoke in that area.

Easy solution if there's a day smoke is bothering them: go elsewhere. It's a big ship, with a small smoking area. Easy enough to stay out of it.
Problem solved.

And if you want to be at the adult pool?

Then go to the other pool. It is the only area on the ship we can smoke at. We can't go to the middle pool and smoke. You have other pool options, we don't.

You don't always get everything you want, when you want it. Adults know this.

You're absolutely correct but don't pretend that it doesn't affect the majority of people on the ship.  The majority of passengers need to make adjustments because of a handful of smokers.

I am not sure cigar smoking is allowed in the casino!

Sure, whatever.  It's one thing to make an area to accommodate the smokers' addiction. Smoke your brains out, I don't care, but it's unfair that in accommodating them, it affects those who aren't addicted to tobacco.

It would be great if they made a completely sealed off area for smokers like they used to have at some airports; you could see the smokers puffing away in their seventh heaven through the haze of all that smoke, but you didn't have to smell it.

I'll never be a fan of smoking areas, but it's a trade-off of freedoms: the right for people who enjoy it versus the slight inconvenience it causes me. And this is from someone who suffers from severe asthma, who grew up in an era where smoking was much more common than it is now. My experience on HA so far has not been significantly impacted by people smoking, though I have noticed it.

It's funny to think about drinking under the same lens, which is very roughly as bad for folks as smoking. There are certainly several drinking venues around the ship, and you even occasionally see the side effects of drinking; slurred words, bad jokes, the smell of alcohol, and occasional behavioural issues. I enjoy a few drinks on a cruise, and I'm glad for that freedom. I'll do my best to minimize the impact on others, but some personal enjoyment is good for us.
