Where were those people? Regardless, I am thankful to "make a connection" with a fellow alum. Being able to do so does add another positive memory to that cruise experience. One day my wife and I were in an elevator. We were getting out and a couple was coming in .I was wearing my Born In Brooklyn tee shirt. The woman asked where in Brooklyn I lived. We grew up in the same area, same street, about a block away.I was not going to ask her age .Her us and asked my age and it was the same as his wife.I asked her name but it was not familiar to me. ldubs Posted August 7, 2020 #28 Share Posted August 7, 2020 Another vote for "all of the above". Additionally, a cruise is a great venue for when we do our family group vacations. Last one, which is also the last cruise before this lockdown, we were 20+ in the group.

We never cruised with more than 8 family members but we have been on a group cruise . Friends of ours who live in NJ were cruising with 60 neighbors.People were allowed to invite friends. My wife and I went along.

I was walking down a sidewalk in Halifax when someone stopped me because of my De La Salle sweatshirt. But turned out not to be the same place or even from the same state. The De La Salle high school near me had one of the best football programs in the country.

rkacruiser Posted August 7, 2020 #34 Share Posted August 7, 2020 Another example of connecting fellow a fellow alum and why I enjoy cruising. Sitting in a deck chair wearing my Ohio Wesleyan University baseball-type cap on the Zaandam during my South American/Antarctica cruise, a gentleman walks by, stops, and we chat. While he was a "youngster" aged Alum in comparison to me, we shared some experiences of our times at OWU. Such unexpected encounters add much to the cruise experience. At least, for me. Was in the dining room as a "single"" as DW had decided to eat in the buffet. I don't remember how the subject came up, but the person next to me mentioned where he went to college. It was the same as me. When I asked when he graduated, it was one year after me. IIRC, we mostly discussed the hockey team.

On a cruise in 2018 we were in a lounge for the muster drill.A couple sat down and asked where we were from.We replied NY and he said NJ but that he went to college in NY.We went to the same college but he was younger than me .He replied that he had. A cousin who graduated in my year and asked if perhaps I knew him. It was one of my best friends in college who I last saw when we graduated. He got on his cell phone and dialed a number and said “do you remember Lenny..........from college ? We had a brief conversation that day but when I returned home we had a 2 hour conversation .
leen50 Posted August 8, 2020 #37 Share Posted August 8, 2020 Many of Y'all's reasons were great. But... I cruise because on a cruise, I am "ageless". Yesterday I turned 70, our family B'day celebration was cancelled. Would have been our 52nd sailing. When I cruise, I line dance at the Sail Away Deck Party, I play all the games=Corn Hole, Charades, etc. I love Trivia, I go to the shows, dance with the waiters at dinner, Go to Quest, stay up to the wee hours in the Casino, jog around the decks, hike w/my DH in all of the European Ports on our TA's. Luckily we are in great health & can do all we want because on a cruise I am NOT 70, I am "ageless"!

LOL One of my dining companions aboard the Eurodam this past January was a gentleman with whom I had been assigned at a table with Louie on a previous cruise. A wonderful gentleman when I first met him and still is. His age was 90. Louie is in better shape than I am nearly a decade and a half younger. His wife is about my age, I think. Your advice about being "ageless" makes sense!😀

getting older slowly Posted August 9, 2020 Author #48 Share Posted August 9, 2020 Age is just a number..... the only thing is the person I see in the mirror is not the person I see on the inside. and these people who say you can't do that at your age..... I am just a little more carefully climbing ladders and getting on the roof but I had a friend whom was in his 40's he was old... dressed like an older people... ( sandals with socks and carrigans .... ) and was so boring. never did anything new... Now all we have to wait for the time when we can next have a Birthday at Sea Cheers Don
