Ocean Medallion App - Part 3

I wonder whether Princess has considered that a large percentage of their passengers are older and therefore not very tech savvy.  (Before anyone tells me I'm unfairly characterizing older people, let me say that I am one of those people.).  I don't like the fact that we are basically force to use the medallion if we are on a medallion class cruise, and I wish that there were still a card option.

Our experience is that it takes the check in staff perhaps as long as rwo minutes to locate your Medallion and give it to you.

I've had three Princess cruises so far and had three different experiences.

The first one I had the medallion delivered to me at home.  I embarked from Port Everglades.  No issues and that embarkation was smooth.

The second one I picked up the medallion at the port in San Pedro.  I stayed in the main line, which was sluggish at points, but getting the medallion itself didn't take very long - just a minute or two.

My latest cruise, which disembarked last week was from Galveston.  I didn't have the medallion delivered to me, but I wish I had.  I was sent in a line with the other slackers who didn't have their medallions either.  It took half an hour to get through that line with the medallion to continue my embarkation experience.

I'm sure they know all about this in Santa Clarita and Miami.  I've always found it ironic that Carnival Corporation's most ambitious cruise line app is at the line that has the highest average age, is less able to appreciate what it can to (or what it tries to do) and is more likely to complain about it.

P.S.  I THINK there's still a medallion-less card option available, but you'll have to query someone else about it.

The medallion won’t confound the non-technical passenger.  It’s the app.  A card doesn’t improve your experience one bit.

BamaVol, now that you point that out, you are exactly right.  That's how I should have phrased it.  Thanks!

Thanks, HB.  Sounds like it might be worth seeing whether I can get them sent to me in advance just to be safe.

Well, I just tried to edit my order to have the medallions shipped to my home.  The only places they would ship are the United States and Puerto Rico.  Unfortunately, I live in Australia (and am taking a cruise leaving from Sydney).  So, I guess I'm stuck with picking them up at the port!

Don't worry about middle name missing in the App.  I have not seen the App page layout in recent months, so I am asking if there is a middle name field you can manually enter.  You don't have to use the scanned passport info - it is just a short-cut convenience (supposedly).

I appreciate the feedback! I ended up just deleting the middle names and figuring if it causes trouble we can deal with it at check in. A middle name mix up won't keep us off the ship.

If Sydney is anything like as efficient as Southampton,  and I am sure it is, any delay should be minimal. After all, in essence it is no different to the days when you collected your cruise card at check in.

I'm new-ish to the app (may have used it 5 years ago?) and hope I'm doing it right.  So far, I have filled out the first pages of Ocean Ready.  I'm 69 days out.  Will more requirements appear, like health forms?

My daughter works for Apple and still can't get the Ocean Ready part of the app to work for her or her partner on their booking. If she signs in with her details it says system error, if she uses the booking reference it says booking already claimed. Doesn't matter how tech savvy you are if it isn't working. Her father and I have a different booking ref and are all done - green lane.

She has phoned and been told a ticket is raised keep trying but still the same.

We go in 90 days, looks like they will have to do it all at the port.

We disembark the Coral Princess tomorrow in Sydney after a great 28 day Round Australia cruise.  We, 3 couples coming from the states, chose to pick our medallions up at the port since we were traveling in New Zealand and Australia for 16 days before the cruise and knew, based on past experience, that they wouldn’t arrive at our homes before our flights.  Each couple arrived at check in at slightly different times (we were all in the first group although that didn’t seem to matter).  Check in was very efficient.  While the clerk was examining our paperwork (passports, Covid vaccinations and Covid test) a roving staffer retrieved our medallions.  They were given to us as the clerk finished his inspection.  It all worked like clockwork!

Last year, we had to download our vaccination certificate. Not sure if thats still a requirement or not.

I am over 65 and taking my under 10 granddaughter on a princess cruise. To be ocean ready the app says I have to provide my credit card for her profile.  She is a minor but knows computers/apps better than me. That doesn’t mean she can make mature purchasing decisions.

Does Princess have limitations? Checks and balances? Guardrails?  for a minor with access to my credit card?

or can a 8 year old walk into one of the shops on the ship and buy anything??

not sure I understand their system.

We didn’t know about limits the first time we took our two youngest sons with us on a ship.  The youngest of the two, maybe 12 at the time, showed up at dinner with a new watch!  Fortunately no one let him into the casino.

Once the ship sails, you can set up a time every day to 'check your shipboard account' together.  She can 'help you' access it (even tho this is one of the few things that actually worked for me on the medallion app).  This will put her on notice that she can't just go buy something without discussing it with you first.

I wonder if you'd be able to go to guest services once on board and have charging privileges turned off of just her device?  That seems like it would be pretty simple to do...which means it's probably impossible.  Never mind! 😁

Perhaps but I wouldn't do that.  I'd want the child to know they were being given some responsibility.  Trust, but verify, you know.

Certainly an option.  I was just offering a suggestion to the grandmother in case other suggestions didn't suit her.  Plus, I'm curious if it's even possible.

How often will your granddaughter be on her own anyway? In any event I would hope that if a child of that age was on their own whoever was serving them would use some common sense and question an expensive purchase.

Guest Bronston

The crux of my original point. If an unscrupulous sales person wants to sell my granddaughter a $10,000 watch using her credit card backed medallion……who/what is to stop them??

what protections do the card holder have since Princess has effectively coerced the sharing of a credit card with a minor child?
