$600 OBC from cancelled cruise is handled differently, how is the other OBC handled?

Recommended Posts

I am hearing that the $600 OBC for a cancelled cruise is credited as $300 per person. Use it or lose it as opposed to credited to each but pooled for making charges on the account. They said one charged $600 on their S&S card thinking all of it was available to either or both. That caused a $300 OBC charge and a $300 charge on the credit card funding the account that both shared. The other S&S card charged $286 and left $14 unspent as they debarked.

If that is the way it is then that is different than typical OBC isn't it? It is credited to each person but if you both are on the same spending account then it is pooled to fund the account. Each person or both could use all of the funds, not just half of what is given in the OBC to each. Right?

Speaking of OBC policy does anyone know the order in which OBC is applied? For example:

$100 stock OBC

$100 OBC for booking

$100 OBC from a group

$600 OBC from cruise cancellation

Which goes first and then what order?

THX!

Sometimes you have to go to the desk to sort out the obc. I cruised with someone and they split my obc and she had to go with me and agree to give it all to me before I could spend it. Customer service can move it once onboard.

It's $600 per cabin, not per person, I believe.

No, this OBC is tied to people.  I needed to get my sister who was on the original booking to sign over her "share" of the OBC and FCC to me even though I paid for it.

What did you have to do to get your sister to sign over your share...Did you do it onboard?

I just want to know if I can still put it all in some random slot machine, and then cash it out at the casino.

Not that it is where it will all go, but this is what makes sense to me too. $320 of ours will go to room grats. Then the other ~$700 is for fun and should be permitted however I want to use it. I am only guessing, but if I put the S&S card in the machine, putting all $700 in at once will be a flag. Maybe put $100 in at a time.

I, too, am interested!

Try it early in the cruise to see if it still works that way as it did in the past. If not, spend elsewhere: tips, specialty dining, excursions, drinks.

Oh, best use is buy giftcards at Cherry On Top, especially if you have future cruises to pay off.

It's per person and the promotion OBC says non-refundable in my S&S account.  The shareholder benefit was only my account. People have tried to cash it out and it didn't work. Also, you can buy gift cards but it won't use the OBC to fund the purchase.

Just curious how you know these specific facts?  Is this first hand knowledge as far as cashing or buying gift cards?

Yes. I am on the Horizon right now. I asked about the gift cards and there were a few people that tried in the Casino.

I've always prepaid gratuities. If you don't, it just is charged to each guest? Also it's the same amount if you prepay or don't?  I hadn't thought about doing this, but it would be a good way to use some of this OBC.

Yes, it is the same amount, and it is charged per guest.  Yes, also a good way to use up OBC if you don't think you will other ways and saves the $ out of pocket up front.  If you have prepaid, with your credit card or something, you can call and ask to have them removed from your booking now (and you can also do it yourself on line too in your cruise manager).  The money will be refunded back to the form of payment you used.

Good to know... also yippie for you!  So jealous!

Any word on other uses for OBC, are purchases in the stores covered with it?  I would guess specialty restaurants and shore excursions are for sure, but was wondering about purchases in stores.  Don't think anyone has mentioned this yet on the boards.

We usually buy hubby cigarettes while on board and sometimes make other purchases in the fun shops.  Then there is always the jewelry store too lol!  OOOO sparkly.

It is still split onboard unless you are using only one S&S account

You can put in all it, just spin once and cash out

Yeah, this always worked in the past. However, Carnival gave out tons of OBC for rebookings during the shutdown. Seems they fine tuned the system to restrict how the OBC is used.

Post 14, says on the Horizon right now that guests are not able to convert OBC to cash, either from the casino or buying gift cards. I don't always believe everything I read, but I'm sure Carnival wants people to use all that "free" OBC on things that Carnival has a mark-up on and doesn't cost them the full dollar amount.

I'm really confused by the issue that brought this up. If you had $600 available to the cabin - and 1 person charged $600 thinking it was all available to them, and the other person charged $286; then we are only talking about $14 being lost. What does it matter? The if the second person was going to charge $286, then why would the first person charge $600 and be upset about going over by $300.... Seems obvious that between the two of them they went over that much and they can just sort out who pays for what after the cruise.

My guess is when they say it didn't work, they went to the cage and asked for cash.  I have always been able to use OBC for slots.

The difference was that the $600 OBC was credited $300 per person on the same S&S account. So when person A charged their card for $600 Carnival applied $300 OBC to it and then charged their credit card for the other $300 leaving $300 of OBC, that the other person B has on the same S&S account, as available instead of applying the full $600 OBC that they shared.
