Remembrance Day

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada & Veterans Day in USA. Our thoughts are for those who made the ultimate sacrifice, past veterans and those serving today. Thank you for your service. A poem by Laurence Binyon says it best.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

I still remember this as Armistice Day, and my father wearing a poppy every year.
He was too young to fight in WWI, and too old by WWII, but he certainly remembered WWI.
My mother's father fought in the American Army in WWI, having come from Canada several years before.
It is still a day I honor.

I remember buying a Poppy as this day approached when I went grocery shopping from whatever veterans organization that was selling them.  Have not seen that for a few years.  Another bit of American history that is going to be lost in the mist of times, I fear.

Me (memorable entertainment)television channel is showing the MASH finale tonight at 7pm eastern. Veterans Day special.

The move Band of Brothers has been shown today on the American History Channel.  Some of it is so painful to watch.  How can what happened have been allowed to happen that led to WW II?  Did the worldwide Depression in the 1930's cloud the vision of so many countries?

Hi, All,

A belated Veterans Day post. On 11/11/2011 at 11 AM, my wife and I were on Omaha Beach. Before that visit we had stopped in Arromanches (not to be missed). We then went to the American Cemetery overlooking the Beaches. Tears in my eyes as I thanked those at rest there.

We then went St. Mere Eglise made famous by the parachutist caught on the church spire in the movie D-Day The Sixth of June. We had baguettes with ham/cheese, sitting in our car, looking at the church with the parachute still there. I know I WILL NEVER FORGET the sacrifices made by ALL of the men who landed and fought in Normandy.

As a kid growing up in New York suburbs, I remember buying and wearing poppies. I remember the poem "In Flanders Fields" so aptly quoted earlier in this thread. Thank you for THAT!

R.I.P.

Jim
