Single Supplement

After having lost my partner in February, I am traveling solo for the first time. With ships not sailing at capacity, I am wondering why HAL still charges double the rate for a single. We had five stars, and I find it hard to swallow paying the fare which HAL just doubles.  Celebrity is enticing single travelers with many cruises at just the rate for one person. I recently sailed Seabourn which charges 1.5 to 1.6 for singles. I will be sailing on Celebrity on 9/10/22.  Any other lines that are making it more advantageous for single travelers?

I am sorry you lost your partner.  My condolences. 
 

I do wish they would offer a break at least occasionally.  The Pinnacle class ships do have solo cabins but I have not investigated them.

My upcoming cruise on HAL is 1.6 the double occupancy cost. It really depends on the cabin and the sail date.

I'd love to find some of the X no-single-supplement sailings, but nothing I've looked at has offered that discount.

 

I took my first X cruise in April and really liked it.  But since HAL continues to give me casino discounts (usually around 20-30% off; sometimes "free" cabins), I'll stick with HAL.

My condolences on your loss @wesport.  And, congratulations on taking the step of cruising on your own.

 

When HAL offered a sale, I found a cruise that had a reduced rate for solos.  Now, to get it you had to do the “best price” option (non-refundable deposit).  I simply did my cancellation insurance and booked.  After booking, I had the Have it All package added at a reduced price.  It worked out a LOT cheaper than if I had booked the regular HIA cruise.

 

You definitely have to look at all the different options.

I’ve been sailing solo for about 10 years now.  HAL’s single-supplement has quite a few variables — cabin location, cruise location, sail date.  I’m willing to pay what HAL wants because I like the cruise line.

 

 HOWEVER, I do wish HAL would give a little bit in regards to how it counts the cruise in it’s loyalty program.  I’ve gotten extra points when sailing on other lines.  (Sorry, I can’t remember which right now.). Of course, those extra points don’t mean much because I always come back to HAL.

I thought I heard recently one brand in the Big 3 was going to get rid of single supplements completely, I hope that's true and others start to follow suit. You don't need a Neptune Suite at half price when sailing solo, but it would be nice to get a a simple Verandah at an affordable price.

 

I've noticed that when sailing and paying for the single supplement I get 2 Mariner drink coupons in my room instead of just 1 when sailing on a Casino offer no single supplement charge.

It's X, on 275 cruises into 2023, so I guess it's an experiment.

I've messaged Guest Services twice in the last 7 years about that.  They just send a boilerplate response, sort of "we're thinking about it".  There are a few lines that do offer double loyalty points, forget which now, but I do know that Princess is one of them.  And that's the weird thing!  Princess is one of the lines under the CCL umbrella.

The spreadsheet showing which cruises are included has been posted several times on the Celebrity forum.

 

Luckily for me, a cruise I'd already booked was included. I was able to refare, upgrade my cabin category and book the preceding cruise as well for very little additional $$.

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sailing solo next month and paid double. I got the least expensive cabin category. For what I'm paying, could have balcony if shared with someone else. This will be my 3rd time sailing solo with HAL. Paid double on all.

I'll check it out.  I don't think I can fit in another cruise by March.  I have my B2B2B in Oct/Nov, then need to work; then have a B2B in January, then need to work; then my Rotterdam TA that was originally scheduled for 4/15 (I'm a CPA, I need to work tax seasons) but is now leaving 4/3!  I haven't told the partners yet that I'll miss 2 weeks of crunch time.

 

Hopefully, this will be a popular/successful program and X will continue to offer it.  But even if they do, I'll still take "free" cabins from HAL.  But, yes, it would be nice to have some other affordable options.

I fully agree that it's time to adjust the single supplement and I hope HAL is listening.  There is absolutely no way that I would pay double to cruise on HAL.  I recently booked my first solo cruise on Celebrity Beyond, with zero added costs (and not a solo cabin).
