is the Edge class over the Edge?

We were looking forward to enjoying the Beyond but then our travelling companions got Covid and we cancelled.  Shame as we had a good price in SV. The prices have now sky rocketed. The Apex out of Southampton is sooo much more expensive that the Silhouette.

I could not bear not having a balcony cabin. Currently sat on a balcony on an Oceania ship watching the twilight come in with the noises of Kingstown St Vincent in the background. O a great line and food amazing but will be returning when I hit 70.

If X think IV verandahs are so special why do they not put their suite guests in them?

We have usually booked Aqua but been in all classes. The X price for Aqua now ridiculous particularly for a non-drinker.  The 4 dining room MDR option would be great, but the prices…

So did we run out of E class cheerleaders? 🙂

For all of the numerous posts on this topic I have never heard a reasonable response to this topic:

"If X think IV verandahs are so special why do they not put their suite guests in them?"

As from Post #101.  In most threads, but not a good answer yet.

Okay, NMT, I will honor your beseeching and rise from the mud, the blood and the - there might be a half-empty bottle of beer or two, somewhere. I will grasp the "E" battle flag, torn and tattered, bruised and battered, holding it high in the air and shouting "thou learned and wise of Celebrity, thou S & M don't tread on me."

Could it be that suite guests are really not that special? Cash Cows are important in any endeavor.

For the E-Class naysayers there will never be a good answer when extolling the virtues of the E-Class ships.

Shall we agree to disagree, amicably of course? Surely, we grow weary of these trivial battles. I'm going to reach down here and see if I can find one of those half-empty bottles of beer.

Nah.... not weary at all.  At least the E-class battle is more entertaining than the dress code battle!

Some may think the horse has been beaten dead, but there is still value in the opinions especially for people who are not already repeat cruiser “experts”.  We are new to Celebrity and are on the younger side for the demographics, being 49/50. We have not sailed yet, but from photos, what appeals to us about E class is the light, the brightness, the open spaces; I love seeing the plants all around and am looking forward to the rooftop garden seating and the sunset bar area.
With all the better love on here for the S, I checked those out, but by comparison, they look to me to be dark, stodgy, closed spaces made to resemble tv versions of London gentleman’s clubs, where the men smoke cigars and read the newspaper with their whiskey… Maybe that is not accurate, but it is what the photos I saw portray. That does not appeal to me at all.

However, coming from DCL and big verandahs, I am not excited about the IV, and the suite prices on E are ridiculous, so I am going round and round in decision making, and appreciate the many opinions here on why one is better than the other.

Not accurate at all IMO. But that's your opinion only based on a picture (s). I disagree as we have experienced the S & M class ships and looking forward to our first E class (Apex) ship and will be in a DPV stateroom in March. And we are older than dirt. We won't make a decision until we return from the cruise if we like the E class or not. Not based on some one else's opinion positive or negative or promo pictures. We'll talk the talk after we walk the walk. Hard to make that call until you've actually stepped foot on any of Celebrity's different class of ships and experienced them first hand.

Well, that’s good to know that it isn’t accurate- that’s actually why i wrote that this was the impression I got from my research- so that people could correct it if not true. It was more than one photo. I also watched a video walk through. Maybe it was the lighting or too much was filmed at night. Before I sail for myself, I don’t know how else to make a decision.

And I was letting you know your impressions and description concerning the S&M class ships are not accurate and as you said, "maybe". I said "picture(s)" and you didn't mention video.  I can't speak for others, but I really doubt anyone that has cruised on Celebrity's S&M class ships would described them as you have. You might even be pleasantly surprised. Enjoy. 🍷

That isn't an entirely inaccurate impression of the pre-revolution ships, but take a look at more recent reviews of Silhouette and Millennium for example and you'll see they have a different vibe.

On the 'E' ships, again based on the videos and reviews, there does seem to be a lot of noise around almost all the time and if that is the atmosphere you want then great, they have nailed it...

Here's an example of 'Raw on 5' while service is in progress, and it sounds a lot too loud for our comfort levels...

It's mostly because for celebrity, positives outweigh the negative.  I bet their market research shows that most people who are purchasing balcony level staterooms don't mind the difference too much between iv and traditional balcony.  The plus for celebrity is the significant fuel savings in having a more aerodynamic ship.

There are less suites, and they can take up the part of the ship where the effect the drag the least, so don't have as big of an effect.

So for celebrity it's basically, which makes more money:

Cost of fuel for traditional balcony + price people willing to pay for traditional balcony vs.

Cost of fuel for IV + price people are willing to pay for IV.

I am sure they have thoroughly done the market research, and it seems to have been correct, looking at the direction of future cruise ships.  More and more companies are moving towards at least having partial IV type cabins in their new builds.

I don't understand why this board perseverates so much over the IVs (well, I have my hypothesis but it's not the most generous so maybe i'll keep it to myself).  If it's not your thing, it's not your thing.  Evidently plenty of people don't mind it.

Sounds like that explains it. I was looking at Reflection, which seems has not been ‘revolutionized’ (?) yet. Is that right? Certainly that would explain the difference.

Not yet. It was refurbished in 2017. Beautiful ship. Originally scheduled to be part of the Revolution in February of 2023.

I sailed in a IV on Viking, this summer, first time in an IV.  I didn't think I would like it but it was fine for that cooler weather trip, Great Lakes in late summer.  I think the IV is just fine for itineraries where you really can't use a balcony much.  I think they will put screens on them somehow, eventually.  A couple of bats got into a few cabins and there is the bug problem, again, on certain literariness.  On pricing, I still think there is FCC money that has to more thru the system before the prices get better.  But I also think there is a demographic that is gaining more disposable income as the 401k withdrawals start hitting US baby boomers.

Speaking of dress codes, on dress-up night, should I decide to glam-up in a Bronx & Banco Galaxy One-shoulder Mini Dress and Jimmy Choo Saeda 100 Candy Pink Satin Pumps with matching clutch, would that work on E-Class only or could I get away with it on S & M as well? I certainly want to look respectful with my dram of Johnnie Walker Blue and La Gloria Cubana. Not over the edge?

The Edge class (Apex) is the nicest and probably most expensive ship I've ever been on, but I would never do a trip on one again unless the price was even more competitive than an M or S class ship and/or the itinerary were unbeatable.

While a wonderful ship, it almost felt like the ship was trying to hard to be upscale for a clientele that does not really appreciate or get into that sort of stuff. Great ships but not my cup of tea.

Ok, I admit I had to Google the Bronx & Banco….

Sure, wear whatever floats your boat, or ship in this case. 😁

Interesting.

We got off the Apex a week ago. Never had that impression of the ship.

Do you think most of the passengers routinely buy Breitlings or Mont Blanc pens? Or, do you think passengers are more likely to read books?  Yet, what shops does the ship have and where was the library?

If Celebrity sent me a Casino, taxes only fare for an Edge class, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But in terms of booking a cruise and paying whatever the going rate was for the week. Heck no.

So it was expensive, and you are surrounded by people happy to pay the price, but you think only you appreciate the ambiance and not your surrounding cruise passengers that paid the same good money that you did?

You realize cruise companies use dynamic cabin pricing right? Why do you think the E-class ships can demand such a price premium?

Who carries physical books in the day of kindles and e-readers.

Geez, maybe the ship isn't for you.  Is it wrong for ships to be for other people?

When the EMP goes off, where will your tech be?

You're absolutely right, the ship class is not for me. If this is the direction of Celebrity, I'll simply find a different line.

I was really excited to see the Apex when it was so well-rated and at the time, the flagship (newest) of Celebrity's fleet, and while some aspects of the trip were great, it was a turn off from the RCCL and Celebrity brand.

If there is a EMP , we wouldn’t  be reading paper books! 🤣
