I don't see the attraction of shipboard casinos as nobody in the entire US lives further than a few miles from an indian run casinos

Many do so why not cater for them? Going to the casino is not compulsory

Not everyone’s from the US so availability there is not relevant to many. Besides having a casino near home is fine but of little use when your away from home on holiday in the middle of the ocean

Would I not go on a Crystal cruise because they don’t have a casino? - of course not but it would be nice to have one. We’re trying Viking later this year so I guess I’ll discover what life is like without a casino then

That's unfortunate. Some of the most enjoyable nights are formal nights when the show empties, and people flow into the casino. Great socializing and fun. I think it's a mistake to remove them from the ships.

I vote for indoor Paddle Tennis or a Basketball Court.

In all seriousness like most things some don't care whether or not there is a casino, some like it but wil still cruise whether or not there is one and some won't cruise without one.  I get all points of view because as we all know from this board some feel the same way about a Fitness Center.

As to revenue, I am sure it brings in revenue but whether or not it made money is certainly not something most or any of us know.

As the late Yogi Berra said "It ain't over till it's over" so let's wait to see what Crystal says and for the final details on this space.

On a positive note some people are going to save some money without a casino.  Just saying.

For me this is my type of Casino.  No money and I was a winner and my winning prize was a stuffed animal in case you care to know.

Actually, the casino on Serenity was very professionally run.  Genting knows how to run casinos -- they just didn't know how to run a cruise line that could survive a pandemic.

BTW, the casinos on Silversea when Manfredi owned it were operated by Casinos Austria.  I fear that's what we have to look forward to if NC does have casinos.

Casinos Austria have been around for a very long time and run Casinos on many lines.

Well, for what must be close to 29 years then, the Royal Caribbean casino department has run its own casinos.  They have a very professional operation.  Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival on behalf of all of its cruise lines, NCL on behalf of its three cruise lines, all have casino departments that run their own casinos.  No one uses Casinos Austria except Silversea, and I would guess Royal Caribbean will take their casinos over when the contract Manfredi had with Casinos Austria expires.

You could be right.

I remember the distinct tie that the male croupiers wore.

I have never bet in a casino in my life.

It's a mugs game.

Good thing I didn't say many or a lot like you have.

Remember the hard time I was given about using those words when I spoke about the many crew who are returning.

On a related note what I said is correct.  A lot, many or whatever word someone wants to use to describe that lots of former crew will be on board is correct.  And that is fact even if some want to dismiss that.

But it sounds like the company mentioned does not run many casinos.

Name one other than Silversea.  They run a number of third-rate land casinos in Europe, but none on any cruise line.

Just curious as to which of their “third rate” casinos you have been to. I have been to both Casino Velden (more times thanI can count) and Casino Graz. Casino Velden makes for an enjoyable evening spent in Austria - within driving distance of my relatives’ homes in Northern Italy. While it is certainly not the casino at Monte Carlo, it is hardly third rate.

If there is no casino, my suggestion is to make the space a game area.  Pool tables, air hockey, pinball machine or two along with an arcade game or two.

That is actually a fantastic idea IMO.

Casinos Austria ran the casino on Radisson before NCL took over and it was branded to Regent.  They may have run the casino on Oceania at some point also.  I have a deck of cards from winning something with that name on it.

Three things that generally require flat ground lol.

I know they make gyroscopically stabilized pool tables, but I don't know if that exists for air hockey and pretty sure it does not for pinball.

I enjoy the casino most every evening when I cruise. Just learned today that Explora Journeys plans to have a pretty active casino. I will give them a try. They are already marketing discounted cruises to the "high roller" crowd.

At a minimum, I think they will have slot machines.  Think Las Vegas airport.  The logistics are easier with minimal personnel costs.  How would guests feel about slots with no table games?

Personally, I think that would be very challenging.  The lease on modern machines is extremely expensive, and the operators require guarantees that Crystal would have to subsidize at a loss with the volume of business Crystal has historically experienced.  The situation at Las Vegas Reid is pretty much as close to the opposite of a Crystal ship as I can imagine — for the few machines they have per square foot in the airport, they have 5+ million passengers a MONTH passing through there right now, most of whom are headed to a casino for one reason or another.

Well, well, well, looks who still hangs around this backwater.

I remember now: you guys financed your luxury cruising lifestyle with your canny video slots play.  Well, your sharp action on the Super Bowl should tide you over for awhile. Unless you've already blown it at the track.

And even if there's no casino, maybe Crystal will still host Bin-joe!

Interestingly enough the space on these decks is prime real estate on a cruise ship.  I hadn't really thought about it until one of the design people explained this to me.  What makes it prime is its location to enrichment, dining and entertainment.

For example, after dinner it was pointed out to me that more people would go to venues closer to the dining areas than say Palm Court. Yes, I know if you wanted dancing with Ambassador Hosts you would go there but for many they will stay on this and other nearby decks.  I am sure that is why the stores are on Deck 6 because it is prime real estate on the ship.

Anyway, food for thought.  😃

Now if it was my decision and indoor paddle tennis court or a basketball court or both. But thankfully for Crystal and for most guests it's not my decision.

That is spot on, Keith.  All three Crystal ocean ships had the casino in that exact spot -- despite differences in their evening flow patterns, to deliberately catch passengers as they pass by to enter and exit the Galaxy (significant because it's the highest capacity lounge), which is usually in use at similar times the casino is open.
