He should’ve excused himself from the table and went somewhere private or in the restroom to blow his nose. That’s a disgusting thing to do while people are eating. Manners 101!

After 35 cruises I think this just a sign of the times.Years ago I don't recall this type of behavior on cruises. I think people have just lost respect for each other.

I think it has more to do with the demographics of the passengers currently cruising on RCI. However, I expect this to change in the future as the prices for RCI have increased significantly without there being a drop in demand. Not a bad thing in my book.

Eating while on line is unsanitary. Just opening your mouth can cause saliva droplets to be expelled. Just wait until you get to your table.

That being said, the real offence noted in this thread was the people licking their fingers and then touching the utensils.

I'm going to be very disappointed if I'm not allowed to open my mouth unless I'm at my table.  I've been known to munch on a few fries, especially if they are dropped fresh and hot.  Haven't had to lick my fingers yet.  I just wipe them on my clean shirt.

So, I guess all the people complaining here returns to the hand washing station after eating but before serving more food again. Right? Right?...

If we return to the serving station, be it for more entree type food or the dessert station, once returning to our table we sanitize again before continuing to eat.  So easy to do and a very good preventive measure.

You must have missed the fact that after he polished his teeth with his finger, he then went over and touched multiple desserts. That's just disgusting.

Question for you:  if your Mom saw you wipe your hands on your clean shirt or for that matter, stuff your face with food while walking the buffet line, what would she have done?  I know what mine would have done; I would have been jerked out of line in front of everyone and scolded.  But then I come from that era where if you failed to say yes ma'am, yes sir, thank you and excuse me, you had a difficult time sitting in that hard desk chair the next morning at school.

Just saying.... I hope some of ya'll don't eat out at restaurants, if you expect 100% "sanitation".

I would like to believe that a "restaurant" is complying with all codes and inspections regarding food safety and sanitation but knowing that there are some who will try to find ways around the regulations.  In this thread, what is being discussed is the actions of "individuals" who by their actions spread the germs that cause a number of issues to others.

Nope, it is the demographics. We have sailed twice in the last year on Disney, I could not believe the difference in passenger quality. Everyone is very polite, kids are well behaved, little to no cutting in line. One of my pet peeves is the amount of people taking videos in all the showrooms on Royal ships, on Disney I think the number is 0.  Things are changing on Royal and not for the better. That being said our next booked cruise will be on a Westbound Oasis Class TA. Hard to give up $2000 in voucher cocktails.

Will probaby get slammed for this but here goes.......

While it's been a few years since sailing a transatlantic on Royal (previuosly sailed 2 Eastbound and 2 Westbound), the passenger demographic is definitely not the same demographic as those who take a 7 day cruise Caribbean cruise out of the US. And yes, I can defintely veryify this statement based on our recent early July sailing on the Oasis!!!

And when I use the word demographic, I mean anyone that displays a lack of manners, hygiene, respect for others, control of their children, and that could be anyone.  Unfortunately, there are many on this cruise.

Then you're misusing the word 'demographic'. But I suspect in reality you're being a bit disingenuous above, because you also said this:

"Agree that demographics plays a major role in these activities."

What specifically plays a role? Because if you're going to pretend you didn't mean any particular subset of people, then your assertion is basically: more people floss their teeth in public these days because of the growing public tooth-flossing demographic.

Exactly, I usually take the time to floss my teeth at the Black Jack tables in the casino. "Do you pay for my cruise? it's very important to floss" is what I use to say when someone object.... 😉🤪

One of our worst cruises was on Harmony last November, and yes, similar demographic meaning people who lack overall social grace and manners, and the air of entitlement was insane. It was the only cruise I've been on where I was looking forward to going home toward the end, I was sick and tired of being around rude and inconsiderate people.

Certain ports seem to breed more of them than others, which is why we love sailing from Texas so I'll leave it at that 🫣

Your own cell phone is one of the dirtiest things you'll come in contact with on a daily basis.

A safe bet that all these clean elite types that care oh so much about the health of everyone around them are touching their phones at least once between washy washy and the buffet line. If not your cell phone then your glasses case, sea pass card, list goes on. All carriers of bacteria.

Humans are inherently gross. It's why we have an immune system.

I understand being disgusted by outright actions like spitting directly in someone's food...but some of these complaints...yeesh.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and comments.  Seems that some are concerned about the unsanitary actions of others, and some are ok with their actions relying on their own immune system to protect them.  We'll continue to use all the precautions available and hope that those that choose otherwise, will be ok.

I don't stuff my face with food in the buffet line.  I may munch a hot fry while waiting.  Someone said no one should open their mouths while getting food.

Believe me, we had to go pick the switch for our spanking and it had better be a good one.   We never had money to do anything past surviving.  But be assured I do no my manners.

Just got off the Mariner of the Seas.  I don't intend to get into specifics but suffice it to say this was our first and last cruise on Royal and possibly our last cruise on any cruise line.  It just doesn't seem to be worth the effort or expense.

I think I’m reading between the lines correctly and if I am, I certainly can agree.

I too have seen some of what the OP describes.  It's not new, been going on for years.  Not RCCL specific either, I've seen it on NCL and CCL.

The effort to fill all these berths has essentially become a race to the bottom.  The days of cruising being something special are long gone from the mainline brands (CCL, NCL, RCCL, etc).  If you want that "special" experience you need to pay for it by stepping up to the upscale brands.

I guess some of us were taught different manners. One of ours was you don’t munch in a buffet line. It’s not going to kill anyone to wait a few minutes before diving in.

Okay, I need clarification:  If I grab a tong full of french fries and put them on my plate, and then while I'm cruising all the other stations/selections eat a french fry or two several times, is that a sin with some of you?  I mean, my hands never touch any part of my mouth/body while selecting other items, it's french fries that are basically handles on both sides.  I do this all the time and will continue to do so and if I don't like them, I leave them on the plate to be picked up at the table.  Note:  Not one germ transferred from my hand(s) to the serving line(s)/steam table(s).  I would never put something on my plate and then put it back on the serving line and I will never eat something directly from the serving utensil(s) OR reach into the steam table/heating lamp, whatever just to try something.

I never understood why people can’t wait 5 minutes to get to the table before they start eating. I have yet to see anyone on a ship starving.

…In a buffet, the only thing I ask is that people don't put back what they put on their plate/tray, and if you cough/sneeze, face away from me and the food, masked or not.  Masks don't stop squat…

Why? What’s the difference between you eating fries and someone putting food back? Earlier you claimed we all used to reuse plates and you never stepped over dead bodies. So what’s different now?

Man, I got on your bad side today/night.

Why?  Well, because I can and I choose to do it.  It has nothing to do with hunger or waiting 5 minutes.  It's because I want to and if I really like the FFs, I'll get more on my plate before I go sit down.

The difference?  Well, let's start with I'm not putting food on my plate and putting it back, totally sanitary.  Nothing I place on my plate/tray ever gets back onto the serving line/steam table/under the hot lamp, NOTHING <for emphasis, not yelling.  I don't know what is so hard to understand about that.  Also, the difference is the hypocrisy we are experiencing today.  We are trying to protect ourselves to death, literally.

This!!! Many ppl are going up for 2nds and 3rds after eating with their hands....not to mention all the utensils with the handles that are literally laying in the food.... I seriously have to not think about it too much! Lol

And I do love a good buffet!

But more importantly, it should be the individual on the receiving end of the germ to decide if they want someone else's germs, not the moron putting his germs on the various deserts decision.

Exactly! It is up to you to protect yourself if you think it necessary by not putting your hands in your own mouth when you eat. It has nothing to do with what other people do in line—-unless they are actually touching the food.

You can’t expect that’s every single person has just washed their hands sufficiently and not touched a railing, table, chair, etc on their way to the buffet. So it is always up to you to protect yourself as you see fit. And stop harping about other peoples manners.
