Rare Selbourne Posted October 18, 2023 #1 Share Posted October 18, 2023 We have all become accustomed to the fairly regular “Cruise from Hell” stories. I apologise in advance to those Cruise Critic readers who are far more politically correct than I am, but I’m afraid that this one made me laugh out loud 🤣….. https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/23857629.p-o-passenger-tells-cruise-hell-botched-hair-treatment/
Spike11 Posted October 18, 2023 #2 Share Posted October 18, 2023 Amazing the effect a discount had on her view of P&O!
Rare carlanthony24 Posted October 18, 2023 #3 Share Posted October 18, 2023 (edited) So all I can take from this is she complained about the hair problem but wanted to get compensation in this case a discount to book another P&O Cruise so she can enjoy another. So will she complain about something else next cruise and say she will never cruise “P&O again” unless she gets another discount? Rare Selbourne Posted October 18, 2023 Author #5 Share Posted October 18, 2023 Just to be clear (before anyone tells me off 😂) I do feel sorry for the lady if she has had some blisters on her scalp and was genuinely affected by the experience, but it was the headline that first made me laugh, then the fact that every time they tried to correct it her hair went a different colour again! I admit to having a rather juvenile sense of humour on occasions 😂 1

Britboys Posted October 19, 2023 #10 Share Posted October 19, 2023 I'm surprised that an experienced hairdresser would let anyone loose on their hair without knowing something about the salon and staff...

Rare Megabear2 Posted October 19, 2023 #12 Share Posted October 19, 2023 The problem with this story, despite the individual being laughable in telling it, is the fact that the staff in pushing these products need to be very aware of the individuals' circumstances. Looking at the lady's blonde hair it's obviously coloured, possibly by herself as she claims to be a hairdresser. "Product" as these people like to call it can react extremely badly on dyed hair. Anyone attending a reputable hairdresser's for anything other than a cut should be asked to fill in a questionnaire about their hair colour, medications etc. and an allergy test taken a minimum 48 hours before. From experience of attending the "beauty seminars" onboard several lines this doesn't happen and that will put passengers at risk of events like these. Often the people selling these items after a seminar are just the beauticians, manicurists etc and certainly not hairdressers or specialists. It is very dangerous and the service provider should be aware of this. Actually it wouldn't be P&O's liability either so they've been good to give her help. On the costs, well my mother, an intelligent shy lady, at the age of 86 fell for these hard sell tactics after going to have her hair washed and put up for a black tie night on Queen VIctoria. When I went to collect her she was sat in her wheelchair with a very large plastic bag and she was most reluctant to tell me what was in it. On return to the cabin I examined it to find six bottles and tubes of various products. A quick trip to reception for a bill print out showed she had been charged over $400 for these items. I packed them up and went back to the spa and demanded they took them back and explained why they had effectively tricked a very elderly lady into such purchases of items clearly totally unnecessary for her. A very shamed faced manager refunded the money and as a gesture of goodwill offered to put my mother's hair up for free on the rest of the occasion nights. It is extremely easy to be pressurised and on that part I have a lot of sympathy with the lady in the story.

I completely agree about the hard sell part of the spa and I always warn family and friends about it and tell them to be polite but firm in declining any products as it’s a complete rip off. Interestingly, my wife went for a nail treatment on Britannia in July and said the lady was very pleasant, until she declined the ‘up sell’ treatment, at which the beautician just walked off and left her 😂 p.s. I have an important update on my 65 nighter price issue later which you will be very interested in. Will post when I get chance.

Clodia Posted October 19, 2023 #17 Share Posted October 19, 2023 What a ridiculous woman! I'm glad I wasn't on that cruise. Having said that, I stick to my own hairdresser for highlighting and cut and blow dry. I've been to the ship salon for an " up do". Suddenly occurred to me that I will have to have a cut and blow dry at least once on the World cruise 2026, which I booked this week.

My wife used the onboard hairdresser once for a shampoo and blow dry, and came back with it frizzy and stuck out, and fortunately vowed never again. It must have saved me hundreds over the years.
