Need advice for daughter no longer able to go on cruise

Recommended Posts

Hi, looking for advice.  I have 3 rooms booked for April as below, with the primary bookie the first person listed:

Room 1 – Me and Wife

Room 2 – Daughter 1 and Niece

Room 3 – Daughter 2 and Daughter 3

Daughter 2 is no longer able to go on the cruise (just had first baby last night).  We booked this cruise almost 2 years ago with pretty good rates.  Rates are now 3 times of when originally booked.  Looking for suggestion on how to handle.

Do I rebook the cruise for Daughter 3 as a solo and just pay the new rate?   Do we just have Daughter 2 be a no show and if (and from what I understand, it is a big if) guest services calls to tell us we need to pay the new price do it then.

Any other options besides these two?  Appreciate your responses

Please clarify:

Room 2; is the niece still expected to sail?  Is she the daughter of one of the adults in Room 3?  How old is the niece?

Room 3;  Are there two adults in this room?

If rates have tripled, your best bet is to let D2 be a no-show.  Like that Carnival can't re-fare that cabin.  They'll just keep D2's half of the fare, which will be less than the increase in fare to rebook that room with just D3.  D2's taxes and fees should get refunded, but it's anyone's guess as to how and to whom.

Can someone else go? If so pay the name change fee and put someone else in that room.

Is daughter 2 certain she can't go? If she no-show's you don't need to do anything so she has plenty of time to change her mind.

All adults, only Daughter 2 cannot sail

No one else can go and from what I understand (and I may be wrong), since the Cabin was booked using Daughter 2's VIFP Account, I believe any name change would still result in re-faring at 3 time the original cost.  I was leaning towards the no show but was a little concerned they may say Daughter 3 wouldn't be able to board until Daughter 2 shows up

Thanks for the reply, that is how I am leaning, just be a no show

Depends on the rate code. If it was a casino rate or some other special rate that only daughter 2 got, then yeah it will probably trigger a refare.

A name change usually does not result in a re-fare unless it was book under a special rate, like a low casino rate. Last checked the change was $50. The other option is a no show. You don't have to tell or explain to Carnival anything. The person just doesn't show up. Anything prebooked, like excursions or drink packages will be refunded to the OPM same with port taxes and fees. You just won't get the cost of the cruise back. Just went through this with my brother. Yes he was the primary in the room but had to no show but his wife and kids went. No issue, no contact from guest service. Refund came about a week or so after sailing.

If the fare was in any way discounted or had perks attached due to D2"s VIFP status, then the rate is tied to her and she must sail for rate to be valid.

Check any restrictions or conditions that were part of the fare under which D2 was booked.

As a no show, this could result in the reservation being cancelled at the dock.

I know this is technically the policy, but has this ever actually happened to anyone? If you tell them the person is arriving later and then board the ship, are they actually going to find you and make you pay more or kick you off? I'm not saying its not possible, but I've never heard of it happening to anyone.

I think that’s the worst that could happen, but I definitely think the fare will change without that person sailing.

It wasn't a Casino rate,  it was one of those VIFP offers and there was no Special Rate Code tagged to the offer.  The only blurb I see in the confirmation email is the below.

Offer is valid for guests with a qualifying VIFP # only. Non-ref dep amounts: 2-9 day- $50pp. MD/CB/JB- $99pp. 10+ day/EU- $199pp. Deposits apply to sailings outside of final payment date and are valid for all ships/staterooms. Offer is capacity controlled and is not combinable with any other discount/promotion. Offer is applicable for 1st/2nd guests only, 3rd/4th/5th guests are responsible for prevailing rates. Cruise fare does not include Taxes/Fees/Port Expenses. Available for cabin assignment only. Guest may select stateroom but category restrictions/exclusions apply. Carnival reserves the right to withdraw and/or change offer at any time without notice. Carnival reserves the right to assess a change fee based on request date, cruise length, and requested cruise sail date. Cancellation penalties apply. Offer not available for group bookings. Offer is available to new bookings only. Offer is available on select sailings through August 2024. Offer ends 4/2/22

I would assume she would not sail without the baby. And I don't know if this factored into the decision, bur they would have to pay full fare for it.  And if there are more than 2 sea days in a row, the baby would have to be a year old to even be allowed to sail.

I did not know the 2 day at sea rule for babies less than a year.  Good to know!! (Not that I'm having a baby anytime soon😉)

Now that I reread the policy, that might just be for Australia, New Zealand  and South Pacific cruises.

This is the thing that could complicate no show unless daughter 3 was eligible for the same offer.

If it was just a reduced deposit sale then it's unlikely to trigger a refare in my mind. But when you call to change the names just ask and they'll tell you.
