Rude Captain on Carnival Miracle? see for yourself...

As a Captain for a major airline, I commend the Captain for his professionalism. His first responsibility is for the safety of each passenger and crew member. Everything else, and I mean everything, comes secondary to safety.

These rioting passengers were disgusting. I realize that it is a drag when you cruise gets changed. I know, because I have experienced it first hand.

With that said, If I had had those disruptive passengers aboard my aircraft I would have had them removed. I think these passengers are lucky that the Captain did not have them removed from the ship at the first opportunity.

If I was Carnival, and being a stock holder I think gives me the right to say this, I would send them a polite letter dis-inviting them from ever cruising with Carnival again.

Or drive on the Schuylkill in Phila :p

South Jersey here......

Nothing like the old "Sure Kill" is there? The longest parking lot in the world.

It was obsolete before it was finished all those years ago...and I wonder who the genius was who decided to build a major access highway in a place where it can't be expanded.

Tax dollars at work, eh?

In response to the comment about not keeping the passengers in the dark:

What about the last stop to the lovely port of ........

Wait for it ......

Sunny Newport Rode Island !

I am sure that all the New York natives just loved that stop. And when did they tell them that they were going there ? .....while they were on the way.

Oh and what about the trip to Port Canavrial first... the satisfaction guarantee says "first NON US port of call". Do you think it was a coincidence that the first port was a US port?

Its such a nice Caribbean cruse when only one stop was in the Caribbean.

**Someone correct me if I'm wrong...I'm rather new to Carnival but a little more experienced in geography ;-) **

Actually, Carnival's guarantee states:

If you are not completely satisfied with your cruise vacation experience, all you need to do is notify us before arrival at the first port of call and you must debark at your ship's first non-U.S. port of call. Carnival will refund the unused portion of your cruise fare and pay your flight back.

Therefore, it doesn't matter where your first stop was.

And regardless, you're complaining that the ships first port was Port Canaveral (a US port) like it was some conspiracy against you. The normally scheduled first port for that sailing was Puerto Rico, which is US territory. And the second stop...St. Thomas...again, US territory.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, you could have invoked your right to the guarantee before arriving in Port Canaveral and debarked in the Bahamas and you would have never even been onboard when the ship stopped in Newport and you would have been refunded about half of your cruise fare.

I was a tour Director for many years. It was a long' date=' long haul to get certified in order to work for the "major" tour companies around the world. One part of the training was intense Transactional Analysis which most of us practiced everyday with 40-100+ people from all over following our lead for days, weeks or a month. A tour, like a cruise, isn't a democracy...it is a benevolent dicatorship, for sure.

One of the very best methods to handle an out-of-control, angry, self-righteous idiot is to simply stand close, neutral facial expression, arms at your side and keep eye contact with the offender.....No comments, no aggressive actions (even though you'd love to box him in the chops). If he moves, you move and stay in front of him, maintaining eye contact. If he looks away, continue to look at his face.

This is what happens. First, he is very aware of your presence and he knows you are looking into his face. He shortly becomes aware that he is a screaming nitwit and you are calm and non-judgemental. Others around him involved will start to notice and back off.....they don't want your attention. Sooner or later the "mob" shuts up and starts to disappear to the sidelines. The only one left is the nitwit who is screaming. As others start "watching and waiting for something to happen", the idiot starts to notice he's all alone in his rant. At some point, he will stomp off to somewhere else out of the public eye.

Of course, this only works with those who possess a conscience, some small trace of manners, some sense of embarassment...and they must possess at least a half a brain.

For all others, the tactic that was used was a quiet word that he was being removed from the tour, pack your bags and you'll be leaving us at the first opportunity....

Over my career, I probably removed 15 or 20 of these morons.....to the great pleasure of those who remain.

I'd have loved to stand in front of Mr. Big Shot...and I would have......if I wasn't enjoying a lovely Yellowbird at the casino bar.[/quote']

As a manager at The Home Depot I deal with this type at least a couple of times a week. Usually it's the person (read: moron, idiot, or ahole just trying to get something for nothing) that is attempting to return a ball of dirt with some sticks sticking out of it. Yes, we have a great return policy on plants (1 year no matter what, but you must have your receipt). Many of you would be very hard pressed to identify a plant from just a ball of dirt and some sticks, but it amazes me how many of these "people" (see above) lose all control and start SCREAMING when I tell them that I can't return their "plant". Number 1) Because THEY failed to keep their receipt and 2) I (or anyone short of a botanist with a lab) can't identify the plant from dirt and sticks.

Now, if after being told "I'm sorry, I can't return your plant", they are calm and civil, I ALWAYS give them a reasonable choice of a plant they would like to have free of charge. But NOT if they are acting like a jerk.

Wennfred? My wife have cruised only on the Conquest. What is your opinion of Royal Caribbean? We are thinking of cruising the Voyager from Galveston.

Thanks

Voyager was a beautiful ship. We had a great cruise this past April and would love to sail her again.

So what do you think of Conquest?

I completely agree with you. They should have been booted, at their own expense. I didn't see anything unprofessional in the captain's remarks -- but even if I had, that still doesn't excuse the mob mentality, vandalism, etc. that occurred on this cruise. The damage potential here was quite frightening, actually -- it's just a blessing it wasn't realized other than some property damage and a few horses' behinds stiffing the crew on tips. Nobody can control a mob, not even a loudmouth lawyer!

Batman, if you think that was rude, you haven't been anywhere, you need to spend a week in N.Y.C. :D

Fred

We spent several days in New York last year, and I found the locals to be surprisingly friendly. Not at all the "rude New Yorkers" I was expecting.

Everyone remember the Riot on the Carnival Miracle (August 29th - Sept 6th)? This is what started it all...

 After watching the video I saw absolutely nothing that could in any way be seen as offensive. The line about not cooking, cleaning etc is one that I've heard MANY captains make as part of their captain's party speech.

What did amaze me was the 2 you tube videos of the riot that ensued in the atrium area. Those passengers should be thanking their lucky stars that captain had as much patience as he did. IMO every single one of those ranting rioters should have been put off at the very next port. I hope that Carnival takes steps towards policies to handle such riots in the future. If I were a passenger on that ship I'd have stayed as far away from all that nonsense as possible. There is no excuse for grown adults to behave that way on a ship in the middle of nowhere. I hope to never have the unfortunate experience of cruising with such people. Sad really sad what a bunch of "me me me" people we have become :(

LOL, just as I thought. A few disgruntled passengers yelling hardly constitutes a riot.

A FEW ?? You mean a few hundred? There were certainly more than a few and I'd hate to have been caught in the middle of that mess. As far as your definetion of a riot perhaps you should tell Mr Webster that he has it all wrong since you know better what a riot is :

I watched the video and must admit, I am surprised. Given all the comments I had heard about the Captain, I was expecting something very different than the video I saw. He seemed very genuine to me and was doing the best he could with a less than desirable situation.

As I stated in an earlier thread about the incident on Miracle, I would have also been very upset, not with the Captain, but upset with the few crazies that created the scene and stirred up other passengers. DW and I cruise partly so she won't have to do some of the things the Captain mentioned.

What person wants to pay good money to cruise, then be around a bunch of crazy acting people? If ever I'm on a ship and something like this happens, please Captain, put them off at the 1st available port.

DW and I actually spent 2 extra days on a ship several years ago due to a hurricane. Missed all but 1 port, but other than minor complainers, I don't remember any of the passengers acting like some of these did on Miracle. I guess that is how our society has changed.

I sincerely believe that the instigator of all the trouble (yes, they know who he is) should have been thrown in the brig and charged with inciting a riot on the high seas. He was/is overly impressed with his importance and needed to spend a night or two in leg irons in the bilge. He wanted something for nothing and created a near-riot in which people could well have been seriously injured or killed.

I do not suffer fools gladly.

Doc

Sorry Betty, I associate a riot with violence, and I didn't see it in the posted video.

I wonder how many of these "loud complainers" in the lobby were first time cruisers who had no idea how the cruise lines handle bad weather. It seems there are a couple of these incidents every few months, the guy who confronted the Captain with his shirt off flexing his man-breasts. I forget what ship it was but it involved missing a port and he had his son and son's friend with him. Now this incident. I hope this isn't the trend of the future and this doesn't become common place, we may have to switch to HAL sooner than we planned. :p

I'm going to suggest a new reality show or sport: Extreme Cruise Shipping where the ships book pax during hurricane season and intentionally sail right into the storm, filming all the way! Passengers being thrown from the ship's deck as the ship crashes into wave after wave in heavy gales. Seeing who can walk down the long halls without touching or falling into the walls. A hot dog eating contest based on how many you can keep down while sailing rough waters. NO one will be allowed to stay in their cabin to sleep it off or avoid the motion of the ship. Last but not least, no complaining allowed about where the Captain sailed the ship.

That could make the Red/Blue or Red/White and Blue Teams more interesting!

Try post 92 -- that has the YouTube footage of several dozen passengers demonstrating their "intelligence" in the purser's lobby on the Miracle.
