In response to the comment about not keeping the passengers in the dark:

What about the last stop to the lovely port of ........

Wait for it ......

Sunny Newport Rode Island !

I am sure that all the New York natives just loved that stop. And when did they tell them that they were going there ? .....while they were on the way.

Oh and what about the trip to Port Canavrial first... the satisfaction guarantee says "first NON US port of call". Do you think it was a coincidence that the first port was a US port?

Its such a nice Caribbean cruse when only one stop was in the Caribbean.

OK we get it you were on this cruise. Again what did you want to happen? Go into the storm? You could of got off at the "first non-US port". The Captain did not make the decision to go to Rhode Island, it takes a huge team of people to do that. Many ports had to be changed, not only on Carnival. This is not a easy fix.

That these "mob" of people were rude to the staff is uncalled for. That they were rude to the people in Rhode Island was uncalled for. That they damaged the ship and took away gratudies was uncalled for.

There are still people that have no home from this storm. Those people would of been glad to have gone to Rhode Island and come back to a home.

I believe the only way these people would of been happy is if the Captain changed the weather and went to the ports that were scheduled. I hope they learned from this cruise and never cruise again.

Of course keeping everyone safe comes first.. it was HOW he said everything in that video that stuck with me.. The bit about how he takes you from NY,and back to NY and where he takes you inbetween is nobody's business.. was just plain rude.. and if he said it differently..and in a fun way.. that would be different but he said it in a "I am God" way..
"

If you listened carefully, you would have heard that remark directed towards "some people onboard who are angry and upset", referring to the boobs, morons, thugs and idiots who caused the mob scene......I hope the lot of them are banned from Carnival permanently...the whole bunch.

I can see where you can call him rude.. he was full of himself in that video.

A distinquished Captain with over 40 years of experience, from Italy....full of himself? Go figure.

Ever met a politician or high-ranking military officer.....professional ball player or the mayor of your city?

It's mostly a male thing.

Of course it is their business, when you pay for a "Caribean" cruse you hope to go the caribean.

Also he made the comment about "taking forgranted that everyone knew it was huricane season". Actually I bet manny people did not know it was huricane season. I for one did not.

I even heard that one group was planing on attending a wedding on one of the islands that were origionally suppost to be ports of call. Now if that were you would you thinkn that was none of your business?

Do you own a TV? Turn on the news? Read a newpaper? Have a computer? How can you of not known about hurricanes? Have you not heard of Hurricane Katrina, Hugo, Faye? I know it snows in New York and I don't live there.

For those that plan a wedding on a Island, getting there by ship is not the best decision. Many things can make a ship not go to a port. If you want a Island wedding, fly there. Again though flying there at that time would of done no good since a "HURRICANE" hit the area.

Personally I think that the Captian was very blunt in his speeking and some of his comments were down right sexist. "Ladies, you don't have to cook or clean or make the bed for a week". No one seams to find those comments offensive?

Maybe it was ment as a joke but with his delivery it sounded pertty serious to me.

Anyone who has ever heard the Captain speak at a Welcome Aboard party on a cruise ship would recognize the patter. It's called humor.

No one who has, would consider such patter as offensive or sexist.....

No way was that Captain rude!!

I go back to my original way of thinking, and that is that I personally feel that NYC cruises do tend to attract sometimes, not always and certainly not the majority, of the the type of traveler who and I say this gently, does not travel too often.

Before anyone starts, what I am saying is that I have noticed that sometimes you have folks who have been cajoled by loved one's to take a cruise from NY. No airfare, easy to get to. You know what I mean.

I will cruise from any port if the price and itin are right, no one ever had to convince me or my family, but there are many many people that just do not travel frequently or well and can just not handle the issues involved with travel.

also, there is that type of person that just seems to think the world revolves around them and that the slightest remark is just so "rude". That may also have been the case here.

That all being said, the Captain was just acting European and not insulting anyone, even with the no cooking for 8 days comment.

I think the passengers overreacted to be sure.

Also, I am sure that many many passengers were acting very rational as well.

This cruise is high priced, hurricane season or not, as most cruises out of NY are, so that too may have had something to do with the mind set of those passengers who wait all year and then this is what happens. You get the idea. They were just unable to go with the flow.

I am looking forward to cruising again with Carnival in 2010, probably in JUne.:)

I am actually going to low key next summer as we just did the fabulous Grand Med on the Freedom and are all tapped out! :( :p

I don't think he was rude at all. It is very apparent that his English is not so good, and seems to struggle a bit to find the words. I just think that what he was trying to say was lost in translation. He was just trying to convey to the crowd what is going on the best way he know how. I found nothing about him to be rude. After further looking into some of the riot clips. All I saw was people behaving very very badly. I have been in the situation they have been on a cruise ship with hurricane conditions. The group I was with did not behave like this.

No, it's called self-assuredness. Being confident in your abilities is gender-neutral.

Ok someone correct me if I am wrong........but wasn't the wedding party on the Ecstasy in Cozumel thread. The one where the Captain was going to take them to Progresso but compromised.

I think all these cruises are getting mixed up:rolleyes:

Or upset passengers who take what they want from other threads to boost their point.

I'm sure the majority were acting rational;) I'm also sure that it is made out to be more then it was. You know the old saying "making a mountain out of a mohill"

Afterall it is over and it is still being magnified to no avail:cool:

And the ship went where after that?

Where they to be there the same day?

And what does any of that have to do with the horrible way those passengers acted?

and you can stop trying someone already won the spoon award...LOL :p

and....how about the ships leaving from 2 different ports with 1500 miles of tropical storms, hurricane warnings, high winds and seas between them.... I'm sure the ships that left Long Beach that day called on their ports, too.

I'm simply...well, agape.

We had this captain on our cruise last year on the Legend. He was anything but rude.He was very nice and even told some jokes. Every time we passed each other on the ship he would greet us with a hello and a smile. He is getting a bad wrap here. he can't control the weather but some think different. Happy travels

They should have tied him (the lawyer) up to the large Frankenstein in the disco and played bean bag toss on his face

ok a bit much.. but how about pies?

I was a tour Director for many years. It was a long, long haul to get certified in order to work for the "major" tour companies around the world. One part of the training was intense Transactional Analysis which most of us practiced everyday with 40-100+ people from all over following our lead for days, weeks or a month. A tour, like a cruise, isn't a democracy...it is a benevolent dicatorship, for sure.

One of the very best methods to handle an out-of-control, angry, self-righteous idiot is to simply stand close, neutral facial expression, arms at your side and keep eye contact with the offender.....No comments, no aggressive actions (even though you'd love to box him in the chops). If he moves, you move and stay in front of him, maintaining eye contact. If he looks away, continue to look at his face.

This is what happens. First, he is very aware of your presence and he knows you are looking into his face. He shortly becomes aware that he is a screaming nitwit and you are calm and non-judgemental. Others around him involved will start to notice and back off.....they don't want your attention. Sooner or later the "mob" shuts up and starts to disappear to the sidelines. The only one left is the nitwit who is screaming. As others start "watching and waiting for something to happen", the idiot starts to notice he's all alone in his rant. At some point, he will stomp off to somewhere else out of the public eye.

Of course, this only works with those who possess a conscience, some small trace of manners, some sense of embarassment...and they must possess at least a half a brain.

For all others, the tactic that was used was a quiet word that he was being removed from the tour, pack your bags and you'll be leaving us at the first opportunity....

Over my career, I probably removed 15 or 20 of these morons.....to the great pleasure of those who remain.

I'd have loved to stand in front of Mr. Big Shot...and I would have......if I wasn't enjoying a lovely Yellowbird at the casino bar.
