Why are tipping threads always removed

On SS 'V Ships or more exactly V.Group' is the major employer. The Boutique, Spa and Casino are franchised and the SS Artists are employed by Choozi Entertainment.

Understanding from whom?

It is my understanding from talking extensively with crew -- bar staff, wait staff, housekeeping staff, HDs, etc.

This was especially clear in the immediate wake of 9/11 and more recently during the depth of the recession, when loads were depressed.

I can recall a number of Silversea/Regent/Seabourn crew who came to those lines from premium lines where they depended on tips. They say they much prefer the predictability of the gratuities-included lines.

The wages for the various cruise lines can be found by a decent googling session. We did this a year or so ago after our first cruise because we were curious to confirm what others had said on board about SS wages being very generous compared to other lines. Which they were but, of course, we have no idea how much tipping alters the balance.

I'd look it all up again and post the links but I can't be bothered. Anyone interested can have a go; set aside an hour or two.

You know someone from Silver Seas must be reading these post, so just maybe they can tells what is right. How much of are fare goes to tipping. Other lines do this up front.

Perhaps I misunderstand but I always assumed that "tips included" meant that the crew received a wage that was higher than crews who were expecting tips. Another way of saying no tipping, we pay our crew decent wages. This is what it means in the restaurant business.

If it actually meant literally that x amount if your fare was for a tip then the crew would get different pay depending on the number of passengers, which I don't think they do. And obviously our fares pay 100% of the crew wages.

Yes, I believe the 'small luxury lines' pay better salaries than the mainstream ones - consequently generally get better staff. But I believe Silversea have said that the staff get a 15% tip? I don't see how this can work, unless it was by numbers of passengers on board. Am I right that they have quoted this figure somewhere?

That would be quite the tip and seems highly unlikely to me.

This is my understanding too. The only people who get 'tipped' by the ship are the Spa staff and the fitness instructor. In the former case the 'tip' element was added to the charges sometime last year. And for the fitness instructor the money that people pay for chargeable lessons forms part of their wages. They are on a fairly low basic (less than a suite assistant) and SS deducts a fee from the charges.

I agree with 5waldos, 15% would be a huge tip actually. Now I can see 15% added to say the spa treatments but those are fully contracted positions and services totally separate from the fare. I know some lines that don't roll gratuities directly in the fare have a standard dollar amount per day for gratuities rather than a percentage of the fare. Some also add a service charge to beverage purchases and at least one charges 15%.

I KNOW....However if we had a number in % or whatever you know what they are getting---than you could add if you wanted and know your not over tipping.

It would just be nice to have a number and Silver Seas could do that pretty easy.

Because they aren't receiving tips they are being paid wages. If they were getting tips their pay checks would vary by the number of guests. I think this is a semantic issue that people are getting hung up on.

What you say may or may not be correct.

And there lies the other semantic point some are stuck on. The difference between opinion that they hold but treat as though it were documented fact.
