Have you ever eaten with the Captain?

Recommended Posts

Been invited a number of times, sometimes on formal night, other times on smart casual. Most times men were in tuxedos or suits, jackets and ties on smart casual. Also have dined at the captains table with staff captains and hotel directors and chief engineer, beverage manager, financial officer, and have been invited by the food and beverage manager to dine with him at Giovanni's table. We cruise a lot, so we get to know the staff, and I think that's why we get the invites. Also, we are Few points from Pinnacle, so I think that has a lot to do with it, but we have been invited when there were first time cruisers at the table, so I guess there are lots of reasons folks are invited.

I also consider it an honor to be invited and we have always had a great time. The Captain usually has lots of stories to tell, as do all the other officers we have dined with.

This was our experience as well. It was formal night so we dressed accordingly.

Special menu - great interesting conversation.

Met at the entrance to the dining room and was escorted to the table - no pre dinner cocktails.

In addition to the special photograph, we received a copy of the menu and an invite the next day to tour/visit the bridge.

It was an experience I would love to repeat.

What a nice extra treat a tour/visit to the bridge.

On our last cruise (our 7th) we were invited to eat with the captain. The food was fantastic! He was very personable. A great overall experience. We also received the special photograph & an invitation to tour the bridge the next day.

We also have been very fortunate and honored to be invited to eat at the Captain's table. Our first time was with the Captain, after that it was a Staff Captain twice, a Hotel Director twice, Food and Beverage Mgr., Executive Housekeeper Officer and Financial Officer. We would meet prior to dinner at the Aquarium Bar for pre dinner cocktails. Unlimited premium wine flowed throughout dinner. At the end of the dinner everyone gets a table picture, a copy of the menu and have also received a cookbook several times. All invites have been on Explorer of the Seas which we cruise quite often on, which could be the reason why all the invites.

Came close to it on the Freedom, when friends of ours and us at the Suite cocktail hour spoke to the captain in Greek.

He was so thrilled,

Then our friends asked him if we could sit at the captains table.

WE DID.

So all 9 of us sat there, but the captain didn't come.

Well at least we got our picture taken, and everyone wondered how we got to sit there.

My wife and I had the great honor of being invited to the Captain's Table during our Explorer of the Seas cruise this past February.

We began with cocktails at the Aquarium Bar. Our evening was hosted by the Food and Beverage Director, there were 12 people in attendance including ourselves. The service was first class. We were seated at a large round table directly underneath the beautiful star painting of the Magellan Dining Room on deck 3.

Each of the guests names were printed on cards in front of our place settings. Throughout the sumptuous meal waiters liberally poured wine and the special menu consisted of shrimp cocktail with caviar, escargot and soup. Most everyone at the table ordered the Lobster Thermador for the entree, it was easily the finest lobster I have ever had, tender and sweet with a rich buttery and garlic taste, superb.

We all posed for a photograph before the meal and by the time we were sipping coffee and enjoying a trio of desserts we were presented copies of the photograph listing the names of each guest. In addition each couple received a copy of the Official Royal Caribbean Cookbook signed by the Food and Beverage Director, the Executive Chef, Hotel Director John Denton and Captain Henrik Loy.

It was a tremendous evening and we shall treasure always treasure the memories.

We do things just a little bit different.....we invite the Captain to eat with us!

Works everytime! :D

This is a great idea. I might try it next time. Where did you eat with the captain? Was it in the MDR or one of the specialty restaurants?

I have enjoyed the stories of those that have and those that would like to, and the few who could care less.

It has always been an honor for us, when invited to dine with the captain. We have dined with him in the MDR, both on formal and casual evenings, as well as special dinners in an alternative restaurant, and the WJ.

I sincerely hope for those that wish to dine with a captain, that your wish will come true!!:)

We were on the Liberty of The Seas in April. My mother who I had taken care of for quite a few years had passed away in February. We booked this cruise very last minute for a time to just get away. We booked the last Promenade Cabin available about a week before the cruise. Then I get a call from the travel agent that my room has been booked twice... aaaah .. what happens... well since we were a higher C & A class they offered us a balcony room on the "hump" of the ship if we wanted it for the same price. We said yes and thought we were blessed.

We ate in the dining room each night. One night the head waiter came by and asked us if we would like to have dinner with the Captain the following night. I told her that we had not come prepared with formal attire for my husband but she insisted just a nice shirt and tie would be appropriate. We didn't really even know that regular people had dinner with the captain on a ship.

I was so nervous... I called to see about renting a tux... no such luck. So I went to one of the ships shops and purchased a nice long sleeve shirt and tie for my husband. Then we got to dinner and one of the other couples had purchased the same shirt.... Guess they were not prepared either. Don't think I will go on another cruise without proper formal wear.

We were just told to meet outside the dining room at a certain time. Our invitation said 8:35 p.m. We did not know what to expect but were given a few instructions by the head waiter and were told about the photo being taken prior to dinner, as soon as the Captain arrived. The ships doctor was also seated with us for dinner as well.

We were a well rounded group as well. A couple from England. A nice younger couple from the Virginia with a military background that were diamond status. As well as another couple from South Carolina. At the time we were Platinum and think became Emerald on this cruise.

The Captain was quite personable and did have a special menu. We had a choice of three entrees (Filet of Salmon, Roasted Duck and Filet Mignon). Most of the diners chose the Filet Mignon except the Captain, he had the Salmon. He was from Norway I believe. He said he could not eat like this every night.... he did not have any wine but provided the table with a nice red and white to choose from. My favorite was the dessert. Not sure what it was called because the menu just said "Chef's Surprise" There was a lovely basket made of almonds that were in some type of sweetened glaze to hold it together. It was filled with a light creme and filled with berries on the top. It was the perfect dessert.

It was also interesting to hear the Ship's Doctor talk to us about the facilities on the ship. He was very confident of the ships facilities and staff's ability to help passengers who needed assistance or who were injured in port. I have never had to use the facilities but certainly nice to know they are available.

We were also provided with copies of the menu and a photograph of the table as a souvenir.

It would have been nice to have met somewhere for a drink beforehand with our table mates. I think that would have broken the ice and made the conversation a little easier.

We were blessed with many nice surprises during this cruise and felt honored to have dinner with the Captain.

A couple of times it was on the little table on our inside cabin (kinda crowded) but in the Royal Suite we put the stuff on the Grand Piano and did it buffet style. He supplied the wine! :)

On my 1st cruise in a grand suite last April we were invited to have dinner at the Captains table on the Navigator, this was my 57 cruise and 12th rccl but 1st invite to dine with Captain. It was a formal night and I did have my Tux, food , wine and service and the conversation was all great ( I was surprised that one person was not formally dressed ). They also gave us the menu signed by the Captain and a 8" by 10" picture of the entire table.

He came to your cabin! Wow! That's great! Thanks for answering my question.

Happy cruising!
