How carnival-esque will cruising continue to get? What are these focus groups that RCI is listening to? I thought the Oasis class was over the top in the amusement-park-ification of cruising, but bumper cars? Observation cranes? What the....

I'll stick to the Radiance, Voyager and Freedom classes. Sheesh.

They are trying to cater to families for that 'all inclusive' vacation. I'm not into be nickled and dimed to death for basic services, such as eating. I too will stay on the older vessels, or just take another line.

I also dislike the apparent lack of open air spaces. This is another inward looking ship. I suspect that pretty soon RCI will just do like the Gulfport, Mississippi casinos. Build something that looks like a ship and tie it up to a pier and never go anywhere. Imagine all the savings in propulsion systems! You can use the space where the engine rooms are supposed to go and put in a bowling alley!

People can enjoy all the amenities, or none. We never made it to the Flowrider on our last cruise, nor to Bingo. I think these additional options are fantastic!

Yes and so do all the people that are booking the two Oasis class ships week after week. RCI knew what they were doing with Oasis and they know what they're doing with Quantum. They do their homework and the do it well.

The ship is sailing out of a cold weather port so having more inside will be a great option.

Not every ship is for everybody. I hope they decide to homeport Anthem out of Boston!

The bumper cars may be new, but it's not necessarily a new, dedicated venue. It will be on the basketball court. To me, that is a "so what?" In other words, an easily avoided attraction if you don't like it. I might feel different if it was a dedicated venue, but it's not.

I agree, they are good for some. No doubt that they will come at a higher cost. If people won't use them, then there is no use in paying for them via the base cruise fare. :)

So very true!! As Richard Fain stated, one size does not fit all which is why there are several varieties of Royal Caribbean ships to choose from. QUANTUM may not be for everyone, but speaking for myself I am totally BLOWN away and can't wait to sail on this ship. This ship is beyond breathtaking! I think I'm more excited about QUANTUM than I was about OASIS even, and that is saying a lot.

So much "Bah, Humbug". Cheer up, there is something for everyone at Royal Caribbean. :D

I'm delighted, I love variety, it's the spice of life. I can still enjoy the ocean from my balcony....even the virtual one, can't wait to see that!

We're just getting on Allure next year...maybe on Quantum in 2015, it will be well broken in and critiqued by then...but I dare say to all the nay sayers...just remember what they said about Oasis......NOT!

I like the idea of fun different things to do during the day and then dressing for dinner and entertainment at night. Perfect fit for us. We too love the radiance class ships with all the glass but I am sure we will try Quantum with all its bells and whistles!

This is what you need for a Northern port based ship. Sailing out of NJ in January and February doesn't exactly screen laying out on the deck during sailaway.

Ernie, did you notice when Richard was talking about the Rip Cord that they had a close up on the aft area of the ship. It looks as though the WJ has an outside seating area.

I think what's great about RC ships is that they offer so much variety. My two favorite ships are Oasis and Majesty--they're pretty different! Quantum seems like it has a lot of great new features as well. I'm terrified of sky diving, so I'd probably never do it, but do I like that I have the option to try it if I want? Absolutely. Right now, I'm most excited that there will be single rooms. That's pretty boring compared to sky diving and everything else, but that's what I'm looking for. If I don't want to go for all the bells and whistles, I'll just stay in my room. :) Of course not everyone is going to be happy with this, but that's what great about having so many options...

I agree, no thanks!! I'll be on the smaller ships with ya ;)

I will remain baffled as to why people want these things on cruise ships. I get the families thing, but cruising is being made into something it's not supposed to be...an amusement park.

One of the biggest issues/complaints that people who have never cruised have is the feeling or fear of being bored. Cruise lines like RCI and NCL are trying to grow the business. You can't do that if you don't find a way to grow the interest in this type vacation. They are going after the Vegas and Disney World customer. Not other cruise passengers. They clearly stated that when they were building Oasis and Allure.

If I'm on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, no matter what fun is on board, I am HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!

I love the new innovations. It's fresh and new and I'll be on it! Can I have your pool chair, Aviator? :p

That is what's great about Cruise Critic, we can state our positions and still get along.

I think this new ship sounds pretty cool. But I do know that change can cause fear in some people and that can be hard.

I now WANT to book an interior room just to check out the virtual wall, what a cool way to make interior rooms awesome. Skydiving sounds awesome too.

I look forward to seeing the real pictures of the ship once it's done

I'm torn also....we like the smaller ships, with the less glitz and glamor...explorer was just perfect.....

But now, the Quantum will be replacing the Explorer, and it still remains a 40 minute drive from our home......

I have to do more research and learn more.....there is still carnival, NCL, Princess and others sailing out of the NY area...not forget Baltimore....

Can also sail when one can expect the least amount of kids so the amusement park atmosphere is not quite so bad....
