Cashing in casino chips Norwegian Epic

Recommended Posts

I recently went on my first cruise, the Norwegian Epic. I played in their casino and kept the chips in my pocket instead of cashing them in and out multiple times. On the day of disembarkation, I was told the casino cage was closed and I'd have to send the chips in via mail.

When I contacted customer service, I was told they don't accept chips by mail and I would have to use them on my next cruise. Logistically, that's not going to happen. It's very frustrating as I had no way of knowing the cage would be closed. It feels like they're using a technicality to keep my money.

Has anyone had this experience? Were you able to find a remedy?

Is anyone going on the Epic anytime soon that would be able to cash these chips for me? I'd be happy to pay a percentage in exchange for the transaction.

Keep the $5 chip as a souvenir.

Simple rules

Gaming Vouchers may be redeemed at any slot machine, designated cashier location or ticket redemption location onboard the ship. All tickets will be voided at cruise end and will not be refunded. Table Game Chips may be redeemed on future cruises as long as the chips series has not expired.

Simple rules, sure. The devil is in the details. Was it unreasonable to assume I could cash them out on the day of disembarkation? I made an attempt while still on the boat.

You might want to post this on one of the Epic roll calls and ask if anyone would help you. Just make sure it is one where you would have enough time to mail them to them.

That's helpful. Thanks.

From my experience, casino is always deserted in US port and most other ports.

How much do you have in chips? Are they good all across the NCL ships? Anyone know that answer?

I have just a few ($50 or so) leftover from Getaway cruise last spring, going back on Escape in April.

I don't gamble but yea, while not unreasonable, it makes sense that they wouldn't be open on the day you get off the ship. Pretty much all the personnel are assigned different duties to get ready for the next cruise.

Hope it works out for you.

The casino itself, sure. I'm aware they only allowed to be open at sea.

But the cage is only for exchanging chips. Keeping it open on disembarkation day seems like a simple courtesy.

Guest Services (Front Desk) would have taken the chip and given you cash.

I'm curious... how long was your cruise and how many ports did you visit? Didn't you notice that the casino, players club, and cashier stations were locked up tight as a drum every time you were in port?

Didn't you notice the casino was closed when you embarked?

Didn't you notice in the Dailies mention that the casino would open approximately XX minutes AFTER leaving port?

Sheesh, take it easy Casino Police. Didn't you notice the opening post was just looking for advice and not criticism or a lecture. Calm down and slow your roll.

Its pretty well known, on all cruise lines, that you must cash out the evening before disembarkation. Casino host makes reminders the last day all the time. If I recall there is a reminder in the daily planner on last cruise day. Ship is pretty much buttoned up on disembarkation day. Just consider it a lesson learned.

Uh-oh someone got triggered ...

Good info here, may help a future gambler from making a potentially costly mistake.

Maybe you didn't notice during entire cruise that the Casino is CLOSED when in port. It is unreasonable to assume that the casino would be open in a US port. And in terms of the details, your Freestyle Daily identifies that the casino closes on the last night of your cruise.

Excuse me, Officer Rascalchu, aren't you the one handing me a citation with you post?

I simply asked questions of the OP, who perhaps may answer:

"No, I didn't notice any of those obvious indicators."

-or-

"Yes, but if I were running the ship, I'd have staff on duty 6 am for guests like me that want that convenience, even though the cashier had been open the previous day at sea for at least 17 hours (9am - 2am)."

Get your citation book out, Officer, you'll make quota with the several posts that followed your sharp response, all of which were more pointed.

To the OP, I hope the chips weren't black or purple. If not, then it's an inexpensive lesson learned.

How original. Didn't you notice how condescending and demeaning "Didn't you notice" sounds? Maybe you could have rephrased it as "Did you happen to notice" or "Do you recall seeing...". Keep your day job because comedy and insults isn't your thing. :*:*

I have never been on a cruise where there were not multiple reminders verbally in the casino that all chips needed to be cashed in and slot winnings cashed in before the casino closed on the last evening of the cruise. Also there is usually something posted on the last days schedule of events as a reminder. Casino cages are only open when the casino is open

There is no difference between the two quotes. If someone choose to have their feelings hurt by either one, that is their choice.

I agree with you on that, but Miss Manners has her preferences.

On topic, I did go back to recent Dailies from Getaway (Not Epic) and there is no mention in the Daily for the last sea day concerning casino cash out as I've seen on other lines. Also, on my April 2017 Escape cruise last year I didn't bother to cash out the < $1.00 left in my casino account, as it wasn't worth the wait. However, it was automatically credited to my stateroom account. So I wonder if NCL has automated that process unlike other lines where they constantly announce cash out on the last day. I really don't remember the repeated announcements on NCL.

That may be what it says but the reality is you can save a voucher for a future cruise as long as you are going on the same ship. I have done it multiple times on the BA. I do not know if they have a cutoff date but I was able to just insert it into the voucher redemption machine but you can also go to the cage. My guess would be one year just like Atlantic City. I also have held chips for a future cruise and cashed them in on day one but again that was only 3 months between cruises.

I'd be very uncomfortable about taking a slot voucher of the ship, expecting it to be valid on a future cruise. The database of active vouchers may be purged, making look-up and verification of stale vouchers more difficult. I'm on Getaway soon and will look if the voucher carries and expiration date. I know one local casino holds fast to their 30 day expiration date.

It was interesting to read a post here about chips having a series that it seems can be replaced, invalidating chips.
