New HAL smoking policy

Trust me , after 27 years of being a 9-1-1 dispatcher , there will always be plenty of people who love to play police informant .

That reminded me of a "dealing with the public" 911 call on Jay Leno recently. Some guy called 911 to report a drunk driver.....it was himself. :D

I want to preface this post with the fact my husband and I are ex smokers. I usually don't like to "wade into the weeds" with the smoking threads because of the name calling etc, but I think I might have something to add to this conversation.

My husband and I bought a small house in Feb from a smoker. We figured we could spend a few hundred dollars to get rid of the cigarette smell. WRONG. We have spent thousands and the smell remains. We have scrubbed the nicotine off every surface, replaced the carpet(bleached the floors before installing new carpet), used the special ozone machines to clean the air and painted all the walls with a special paint. The experts now tell us the nicotine is probably in the air ducts and on the coils of the heating and air conditioning system. Our next option is to replace the ducts and clean the coils...thousands more. We can't just clean the ducts because that will stir up the nicotine. If the smell still persisits then the nicotine is in the insulation between the walls.

I think the cleaning fee of $250 is bogus...its not easy to remove nicotine from a room. If the cruise companies ban smoking then infractions should mean leaving the ship at the next port.

Some have mentioned that smoking is legal...so is playing Heavy Metal music with the volume on high.

It is indeed legal within the restictions of the local laws and cruise ship policies that allow it. Playing Heavy Metal is also as long as it is within the local noise abatement laws. So what is your point?

Now there's a responsible citizen. :) Hi Diane.

Hello Colleen! :)

I'm headed back to your beautiful country a week from tomorrow. Two days in Vancouver before I head back to my beautiful country (Alaska ;)) for a week. I am so looking forward to getting out of this oppressive Texas heatwave!

You don't hear smokers whining about smoking. I guess according to you stating ones beliefs, is whining, so be it. Yes for some reason only nonsmokers seem to whine about smokers and feel they have the right to take away a legal activity just because they don't imbide or are allegic or have asthma or some other ailment besides being a crumudgeon (sp?).

If someone is following the rules or is being a considerate smoker by only smoking where permitted, then no one has a legitimate complaint if they are passing through that designated area. Since the new policy doesn't even take effect till 2012, I suspect the smoking police-wannabes will try to report smoking when it is still okay to smoke in the room (no I don't smoke in my room or house). It should make for an interesting experience until the poilicy is actually in effect.:)

But I was responding to the poster who said non-smokers whine about chair-hogs, food, and winning money in the casino. Go back and read it again.

This is from a person who has never cruised on Holland America Line, who says that they would never respect Formal Wear conventions, and expect to report me for smoking, and have me disciplined by the Cruise Line. I spend over $30,000 a year cruising on Holland America ships, and this person expects me to listen to their trailer park rants? I don't think so. I don't think HAL is going to abuse me either, not in a Deluxe Suite, for what I pay, spend and tip. This Cruise Critic blog is going to the dogs, literally. It may have run it's course.

I seriously doubt if the cruise line cares how much you spend per year when it comes to enforcing their fines, but I guess you can afford it. We'll be on a ship very soon. What's your next HAL cruise ? Maybe we can be neighbors. :D

Kind of re enforces something we learned in a training class a while back.. The two groups with the biggest sense of entitlement are the very rich and the poor.

The rich walk around with that "Do you know who I am?" " Do you know who my husband/brother/cousin/whoever is?" "Do you know what I pay in taxes/what I paid for this cabin ?"

And the poor are so used to some agency cutting them a check, providing them a place to live, come running when they need something that they just expect it and get down right nasty when they have a situation that they have to do something themselves to get out of.

Believe me, they care how much one spends. At most there will be one fine for smoking in a dlx suite (or probably any cabin) and they'll deep clean once at the end of the cruise.

So make it a fee and not a penalty. I'd gladly pay it but I doubt that'll happen and we probably won't cruise HAL again if we can't smoke in our cabin. We're not going to go on a HAL cruise and disregard the rules, haven't done that before and won't now. Quite frankly smoking on our veranda has never been a big deal for us. Yes, we've done it. Yes, we've tried to be aware of our neighbors and have not smoked on our veranda because neighbors were out.

The statement was written by me and it pretty much stands as written. If they are whining about smoking they are probably whining about everything else as well. Not all nonsmokers are whiners but the ones that do, tend to be also whine about everything else.:)

If HAL is going to be smart about the $250 fine, they will add it to a guest's final bill at debarkation, when it will be too late to penalize the cabin steward for reporting smoking in the cabin. That way the cabin steward will not get cheated out of any tips and will not have to face an unhappy guest during the cruise. And believe me, the cabin steward will report any in cabin smoking as he will be required to do so.

If there are multiple infractions, I hope that the fee will be assessed multiple times, of course; otherwise, some of the worst offenders will just factor the small amount of $250 into their vacation, similar to the payment of an excursion.

And if two people are smoking where it is prohibited, say two occupants of a stateroom, then each of them should be fined....for each occurrence.

As for spending lots of money on a suite and smoking in the cabin. Just remember the next PAX in the suite also spent lots of money to be there too. And they may not like the smell of smoke in thier suite. The deep cleaning may or may not get rid of ALL the smell. Non-smokers also book suites and spend lots on money too, and so do smokers who don't smoke in the cabin and follow the rules.

Maybe a group of smokers who are close together could designate a smoking room & split the fines? :D

They will fine (charge) you once for extra cleaning as does many hotels. It doesn't hurt other passengers as to what you do in your closed cabin unless they are looking for an excuse to hurt another passenger. Maybe they should just stay home and picket all the office buildings where smokers congregate outside the front door.

I agree with you on all points. These blogs draw bitter people who can vent their frustrations while concealing their identity. They can't confront their partners or parents, but they can fix those smokers (or whover) by gum!

Actually it does in two ways:

First smoke can and flow from cabins into the hallway. There are cases where in can get infitrate into neighboring cabins, depending upon the air flow system.

Second, a through cleaning may and probably will not get rid of the residue. At best it may reduce the level of detection for the next passenger. If a person smokes heavily inside a cabin for the length of a cruise a cleaning will probably not reduce the level below detection for the next guest. A guest which now has the expectation of a smoke free room.

There's a big difference between smoking in a designated area & one where it's been banned. I might be the one to get the smoker's cabin the next cruise & it has happened.

Exactly

The ones who claim to be the biggest A** kickers , usually spend more time kissing than anything else .

Hasn't anyone thought that the demand for balconies will now increase as some smokers who were previously happy with an inside cabin will now want a balcony? And we all know what happens to prices when demand is high:cool:
