Smoke smell

To this day, the only thing that REALLY bugs me BIGTIME about HAL is their pandering to smokers! There! I've said it!

Nobody (okay, ALMOST nobody) smokes anymore, so why does HAL keep playing footsie with the people who stink up the ship with smoke???

UGH!!!:eek::(:mad:

I am such a wishy washy person usually that I don't usually ever comment on comments like this. But I really have to on this, lest the powers that be at HAL think 100% of the cruisers feel the way the poster above does.

I am a non-smoker, but my husband is a smoker (a pipe actually). We both love to cruise and I would be very sad not to be able to do this. I love travelling with my husband, bad habits & good habits combined & would never ever dream of going without him. If smoking is banned throughout the ship, poof, there goes our stress-unwinder (and we work very hard the rest of the year to save money to vacation) and what, we just sit at home? This would not give me much incentive to work for sure! Might as well retire & let someone else keep the economy going.

I would never ask him not to smoke for 21 days - goodness knows I would have to jump overboard by day 2 I am sure. And I know in my heart he won't quit until he meets St Peter or they make it illegal - it's something he enjoys and has done for over 40 years.

As it is, we have had to give up the Veendam Antarctica cruise I was looking at as you cannot smoke outside at all when you are in Antarctic waters. As we would be in Antarctic water for a couple of days & there is now no where to smoke inside, I cannot ask him not to smoke for a couple of days. (we don't gamble - although I guess we could start & he could switch to cigarettes). I am also coming to realize that my incentive to work over the next 5 years to save for that world cruise is not such a great idea either.

Please leave him some space to light his pipe so that we can both enjoy something we love & are not afraid to spend lots of money on. He is a considerate & polite smoker & would never step out of bounds of smoking where he can't.

Joanie: I am sorry to say that smoking has been banned in the Northern Lights. I know you were recently on the Westerdam. We were not able to smoke there on the Westerdam in October. I had a copy of the smoking policy from HAL's website and showed it to the the GRM. She shrugged and said it was a new policy.

We were on the Noordam two weeks ago and the only place we noticed smoke was in the casino and then the guy next door to us was smoking on his balcony but as long as we were moving his smoke went away from us!

Would your husband be able to smoke in the casino when he needed to light up during those few days? No reason he would have go gamble I wouldn't think. Also, I have read on this form about electronic cigarettes. I had never heard of them before, and not sure if they would be satifying to your husband, but I have read you can use these in your cabin. It seems a shame that your dream vacation can not be realized because of the smoking issue. Perhaps there is still a way to figure it out. I hope so!!!!

Smoking in the casino is now limited to active gamblers, and obviously only when the casino is open.

LyndaS said her DH smokes a pipe and they are not permitted in the casino.

But even if he smoked cigarettes, the policy for casino smoking is that the smoker must be gambling and can only smoke in casino when it is open. People cannot go in just to stand around and have their cigarette if they are not gaming.

I agree with LyndaS, we have the same circumstances, my DH of 45 years smokes and I don't, but he's kind and doesn't do it in the house or in the car if I'm in it. we don't go on certain lines because of their smoking rules and I can see eventually we may not be able to cruise at all. I'm going to really miss my cruises but I'm not as vocal as the anti-smokers and they'll probably win.

I don't think it's how vocal one group or the other is. It's numbers and revenue. Nonsmokers outnumber smokers, and HAL has to follow that trend. HAL spent years doing a survey about smoking before they changed the rules, so they must figure it's in their best interests to limit smoking.

Do as the rest of us have done and spend your money elsewhere. Hal will find they've made quite an error of judgment - Celebrity cruises from UK are as cheap as chips and they have had massive advertising campaigns for months. I think the cruiselines forget that there's usually at least one smoker in a party.

Yes...... Only about 20% of the adult population in Canada and U.S. smoke. I don't know about European countries (or other countires) but do know that many have strict no smoking policies.

It isn't how vocal the non-smokers are so much as there are such a huge percentage that are non-smoking and don't want to be around it.

We never travel with anyone in our party who are smokers. It isn't that we wouldn't so much as we do not have any friends or relative who smoke. The last smoking couple with whom we were friends have now quit. That brings our exposure to -0- and we like it just fine that way.

Let's be honest. HAL is way, way behind the times when it comes to smoking policies.

The casino is not just bad, it is really bad. As is every room near it. To make matters worse, the ventilation on some of the older ships leaves something to be desired.

So, if smoke bothers you, avoid the casino completely and check the layout of the ship to ensure that your will not be forced to walk near it on your way to any other parts of the ship that you desire.

Strange how many posters say smokers are in a minority yet everyone seems to have constant smokers around them on about 700 (at least) balconies:D

....and then non smokers say that every person sails with a smoker:D. Huh? Trust me when I say on 90% of my cruises there has been a smoker next to me. I can smell it because I don't smoke. I can't wait for my next cruise so I won't be subjected to it. Hopefully HAL will soon follow suit.

I am going to be very curious to see how the smoke smell is on our upcoming cruise. DH and I have both quit smoking and this will be our first cruise since doing so. We never noticed it much before, but I did find the sports bar to have an odor for sure. As we are not gamblers we only walked through the casino quickly, but an odor was definitely there. I am guessing I will be more aware now that we don't smoke. Will report back here when we return.....35 days til sailing, but who's counting? :)

Any bars without smoke on the maasdam, I would hate to have my cruise ruined by smokers, learned that the best spot I wanted to hang on based on the pictures I've seen (the crow nest) is a smoking bar, what a shame... I'm not against smoking outside in designated areas, but I feel smoking next to non smokers is a violation of their rights to pure air and be cancer free. Hope the smokers respect me, I have asthma that could be a problem for me but don't want to flame anyone for smoking, they have the right to kill themselves if they want, I don't care, just don't do it next to me, I don't wanna die younger than I should...

The only indoor spot where smoking is allowed on the Maasdam is the casino.

There is no smoking allowed any longer in the Crows Nest; there hasn't been any smoking allowed in the other lounges for years.

If you want to stay away from smoke, stay away from the casino.

And stay away from the smoking area outdoors. That's easy to do.

Change (more) is coming!

Any idea what kind of change or when it will be announced?

My parents have final payment on their Prinsendam cruise due next week and will not want to take the cruise if they are not allowed to smoke on their veranda.

Thanks a lot, I've read a thread perhaps it was too old, that will be a lot better I'm not a fan of casino since I was a gambler once and I prefer to stay away from that place at all cost, coincidence is that the April 1st will be for me a celebration of 10 yrs without gambling at all.
