driverandrews Posted April 28, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 28, 2013 Does anyone take their dearly departed ashes out to sea to scatter? Do you require special permission from the cruiseline / captain?
luddite Posted April 28, 2013 #2 Share Posted April 28, 2013 It requires permission if you are caught doing it.
Rare Keith1010 Posted April 28, 2013 #3 Share Posted April 28, 2013 You do need permission by the cruise line but many allow you to do this with approval. Keith
okgirl Posted April 28, 2013 #4 Share Posted April 28, 2013 It's done all the time. A friend that I cruise with just lost her mother late last week. She had contacted John Heald to ask what the procedures were and he said he would be glad to help her with setting this up. She plans on having this service when we cruise in October on the Magic. My sister and I are going to have our ashes scattered from a ship when the time comes.
sail7seas Posted April 28, 2013 #5 Share Posted April 28, 2013 It is very commonly done and I know for sure HAL does a very lovely, respectful, comforting ceremony. Contact Ship's Services in advance (800-541-15760) to obtain permission and they will work with you and the ship. When you arrive at the ship, the Guest Relations Manager (front office) will work with you.

Many of us who don't cruise Carnival know of him and his excellent blog.
Langley Cruisers Posted April 28, 2013 #7 Share Posted April 28, 2013 It requires permission if you are caught doing it. Wha?? It requires permission period. "If you are caught doing it" is not the issue at all. OP, as stated, check with your cruise line. They often will provide a biodegradable box for the ashes. You can't just "scatter" them - imagine the horror if the wind swept them anywhere else but out to sea. Landing in someone's drink or on someone's freshly-sunblocked body would be awful, don't you think? :( The cruise line will tell you how to go about doing it legally, morally, ethically, and safely. So sorry for your loss.
Treven Posted April 28, 2013 #8 Share Posted April 28, 2013 Pam in CA has a lot of info on what's required and the process. She went through this recently; hopefully she'll see this and chime in. No, you're not being morbid at all.
Seago2 Posted April 28, 2013 #9 Share Posted April 28, 2013 There are also different types of biodegradable urns you can use- here is an example: http://www.seaurn.com/
OCruisers Posted April 28, 2013 #10 Share Posted April 28, 2013 This is done quite frequently. You'll have no problem arranging it correctly/tastefully through your cruise line. LuLu ~~~~
lady_cruiser Posted April 28, 2013 #11 Share Posted April 28, 2013 Royal Caribbean also has a touching ceremony for scattering ashes of your loved ones. Here's a link from trainman-2 who described to us how touching his ceremony was honoring his wife's wishes - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1404941&highlight=ashes
Krazy Kruizers Posted April 28, 2013 #12 Share Posted April 28, 2013 You are not being morbid at all. Many people have done this. But you need to contact your cruise line and get in writing for permission to do so. Many times there is a very quiet, private cermony for this. navybankerteacher Posted April 29, 2013 #14 Share Posted April 29, 2013 Ashes are an item they screen for. I wouldn't be surprised -- and the container would almost certainly show up on the scanner (several pounds of dense material) so trying to sneak it on board would most probably be unsuccessful -and embarrassing. Langley Cruisers Posted April 29, 2013 #15 Share Posted April 29, 2013 Ashes are an item they screen for. ...so trying to sneak it on board would most probably be unsuccessful -and embarrassing. Sorry, but did anyone here mention they were trying to "sneak" ashes onboard? OP asked a legitimate and sincere question. S/he did not say s/he was going to go against policy or sneak any ashes onboard. I just don't understand both of your comments about this.

CFD130 Posted April 29, 2013 #17 Share Posted April 29, 2013 I am a funeral director- I can guarantee that if you just try to scatter them off the side of the ship they will blow back on you or probably onto someones balcony. Do yourself a favor and just contact your cruise line and let them help you have a nice ceremony. jmho

Yes, as mentioned, and not only that but Royal Caribbean, for example, is very serious and committed to their "Save the Waves" program. You are not permitted to throw anything overboard - nothing. This would not include ashes in a biodegradable container when pre-approved by the line first.
grand isle joe Posted April 30, 2013 #19 Share Posted April 30, 2013 I would be aware of the wind direction........and close your balcony door or Uncle Fred would end up being sucked into housekeeping's carpet sweeper.....
