Hi Greg.

What Have I been told?

Edit: Do you mean what I think you mean?

Doesn't matter, I'll have another glass of wine:-)

I thought you were talking about you were booked on the 4 night Voyager of the Seas cruise from Singapore 21 November 2014 that has now become a charter.

I was asking did you know before this forum that it had been changed?

Glen

  • 3 weeks later...

Asia New Network out of Hamburg has ran a piece originating from China Daily. The article concerns Carnival Corporation's rapid expansion in China since first arrival in 2006. While the Carnival information is clearly attributed to the Carnival CEO.

Carnival Corp & Plc Chief Executive Officer Arnold Donald told China Daily that China will become the dominant market despite the fact it is currently smaller than established markets such as North America and Europe.

The article closes with RCI related information:

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, the world's second-largest cruise company, operating six brands including Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Pullmantur, entered the Chinese cruise market in 2008, providing cruises originating from Shanghai and Hong Kong.

In 2015, the company will introduce two ships from its Quantum class and Oasis class to increase its presence in China.

While the original China Daily article can be found online, I received a virus warning and did not want to put the link.

Since Oasis III is not scheduled to be launched until Mid 2016 I highly suspect the 2015 introduction of an Oasis class ship.

Small detail, but it is a 2 night. It was on the Southampton schedule a year ago and then they took it off later.

The Irish Travel Agent Association announced a few months ago that they had scheduled their annual conference onboard that sailing. The conference was fully booked in two days time, the fastest sign-up they had ever experienced for one of their sailings.

Key accounts in Europe were only given one cabin for a FAM trip on this Quantum sailing per blog posts a few months ago.

Press, of course, never talk about their 'junkets' as in many cultures it is considered a conflict of interest to get 'freebies'

That is most definitely the case. Interesting that it made it into the China Daily though, none the less, and must have come from somewhere.

China Daily is internationally distributed and I read it often when passing through airport lounges. The journalist who wrote the article has interviewed some key players in the cruise industry, but did not reference where this information was coming from.

Cheers for that. Looks like China is the place to go. Wonder how long it will last. The economy there has to take a dip sooner or later

It's already happening. The property and construction booms in China are unwinding now, evidenced by falling prices and falling sales of residential property there. Cruise lines are flooding that market with capacity right at the time when a downtrun coming. Might lead to some bargains next year or some capacity being diverted to other areas. Bring Quantum to Australia!

I'd gladly trade you Quantum if you give back Voyager and Mariner!:D

Deal! :). I don't think Mariner was coming to Australia (we have Explorer for the southern summer 15/16 though).

Thing is that the downturn in china won't directly affect these ships now as these are being mostly fully chartered

There seems to be a huge glut in cruise availability for the Chinese who are huge in number and therefore will take a long time for the supply to catch up

A lot of boats yes but lots of people

Yes, but only a small portion of them are able to afford a cruise. If the charter operator can't sell the cabins they will be heavily discounted. Non-Chinese probably would not benefit from the lower prices though, given that they are (apparently) running them as Chinese language only.

I think the cruise industry, like many mainstream analysts, has misread the Chinese economy. The iron ore price and Macau gambling revenues are other indicators that the party is coming to an end.

Good thing that cruise ships, unlike land resorts, are easy to redeploy elsewhere.

I think it doesn't matter that much for Royal Caribbean if the prices are dropped, since they get a fixed price for the charter and it's the tour operators business to fill the ship, and eventually to make money. Besides that they will make profit big time from the casino.

So true it is their dollar they bank on

But don't think really will affect the cruises as still an under supply for demand there

I got a survey from RC, asking me how I liked the ports on my Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Freedom.

Then, it asked me to pick three destinations. So, I did Alaska, western Europe, and northern Europe.

The survey wanted me to rate various ports on a scale to 1 to 10. For Europe, besides some of the current ports, it had ports from when RC used to send a Vision-class ship around the British Isles.

Needless to say, I gave every port in the U.K. and Ireland a 10.

Is it safe to assume that RC is considering cruises for the British Isles in the summer of 2016? If RC does return to the British Isles, I would seriously consder cancelling my cruise out of Copenhagen to Norway in August of 2015, simply because Great Britain and Ireland are much higher on my to-do list than Norway and Denmark.

I received that survey as well regarding my last cruise on Allure. I think they're constantly evaluating new ports of call, or resuming calls to places they used to go, especially as they expand the fleet. I don't think that indicates that any of these particular expansions are imminent though... There were just so many options on that survey.
