And I am not talking about " friends of friends" on FB. I am talking about her pulling up your profile and handing her iPhone/laptop to another crew member.

I am Facebook friends with a couple staff members from a trip a couple years ago. A bartender was great to us and we wanted to remain friends. It didn't hurt that she is good looking :cool:. We also became close with few of the entertainment staff and have kept in touch through FB as well

I'm friends with our favorite waiter from our last cruise on the Paradise, but we arranged that on board. I shared a few pictures that we took on the cruise with him but that's about it.

The manager of JiJi's on the Sunshine sent me a Fb friend request the other day. Of course I accepted her. Btw she is the best restaurant manager I have seen on a ship. She knows exactly when to jump in to keep things running smooth as silk. Like on most ships the managers just like to give command. You can see that she just love her job.

 

I even complimented her that she was the best dressed woman of the 7 seas. Love to see when I was coming in and she was standing there with the Cucina manager. What a difference. Btw both of them don't wear uniforms.

 

I also have my MDR waiter on the Destiny and the casino bartender on the Glory on my FB. She is now on the Magic.

I would without hesitation. If she made a point to seek you out onboard to chat.. i doubt she would think it odd that you sought her out on FB. I think its great that you became fast friends.

I don't "do" facebook, so my idea of the concept is hazy. But I know people who "friend" businesses - so the idea of a "friend" on facebook seems to be more encompassing, so why not?

 

Meanwhile, I wish that I had gotten some contact information from the bar waiter on my first Pride Cruise - he is the standard that I hold all bar staff to while on cruises. I'd even consider cruising on a ship on which he is working not unlike how some people cruise for the cruise director.:p

Our group of 13 fell in love with our drink server in '10. We all friended him on FB and visit with him frequently and cruise on his ships when we can. When his little girl is in high school, hopefully she can be an exchange student and spend an academic year with one of us!

With cruise directors, I would expect that having a social media presence is part of their job, since the CD tends to attract customers in a marketing role. So they would accept whatever friends they could get.

 

As for others, unless I am interested in seeing day to day goings on in somebody's life and them mine, I don't FB them. If I want someone to be able to reach me at some point in the future, I give them my email address.

The only ship staff friend is someone I've interacted on CC. We've never met in the "reals," but I hope someday to be on a ship with them. I'm just missing this person by a few weeks later this year:(

My husband and I are both facebook friends with a couple of Carnival employees. I see nothing wrong with it. He or she can always refuse your request.

I (hoping to join Carnival's entertainment staff in a few years) am friends with several entertainment staff and CD's. Some I haven't even met. We write to each other occasionally. I mean a little networking doesn't hurt, right?

Her mentioning it in regards to friends and family is not the same as her saying, "Hey, friend me!" .

 

In this case, the fact that the employee stated they use FB for friends and family -- but did NOT explicitly invite the OP -- would make me a bit leery of sending them a friend request...unless the Carnival employee was clearly being more friendly and inviting than you'd expect from a service employee.

 

There have been a couple of Carnival employees who I've gotten along with, but I just gave them one of my cards with my email address and personal website on it. One of them did email me back, but it took a while.

Not to "poo poo" what you're saying and if you are friends with them that is great, but when people friend request the employees perhaps they are in the mindset that "I better accept their friend request because they next time they are onboard they might give me a bad rating if I don't".

 

When we, as the paying customer, friend request someone who is dependent on our money to sustain their employment, we are placing them in the precarious situation where they may feel obligated to accept.

Do you friend the waiters at your local restaurant? After 18 hr day, the last thing I want is to talk with someone I had to wait on.

 

My answer to this would be yes. Sometimes I do. I have made friends with servers or bartenders at local places. Particularly if you are a regular somewhere and get to know them.

 

I made friends with a couple bartenders on Princess and they gave me their email addresses.

Good point. I didn't think about this. In the only case where I kept in touch with the bartenders from a ship, they offered me their contact info. But I was solo on a 7 day cruise and we talked a lot.
