photographers in main dining room

Another thread got me thinking.... what do you think about the photographers who come around while you're eating, and take your picture? This annoys me so much! We're eating, not having a photo shoot. This is definitely not something I would ever complain to Carnival about, and usually we politely decline, unless the photog catches us off guard, and then we pose and smile.

And like I said, it's not a huge deal, but it does annoy me that they're bugging us during dinner, in hopes we'll spend more money on pictures. opinions on this?

A lot of the time I just let them take my picture with very little intention of purchasing it. I just have a little fun with it and I usually go to the photo gallery later on to see how it turned out, just for kicks. On my last cruise, we were all solo and nobody wanted their photos taken so we politely told the photographers we were not interested and they left us alone. Of course they want to take your picture and sell you as many watered down drinks in the case of the roving bar guys - it doesn't mean you actually have to buy them.

Seems to me I recall someone getting turned away from the dining room doorway for wearing a tee shirt the same evening. When I go into a dining room at night I expect to see people that have made an effort to dress for dinner. I did not see anyone in shorts etc. in the evening in the dining room.

I'm not a big picture taker, so they do annoy me. Random photographers DO NOT take your picture in land restaurants unless there's a very good reason for it. This doesn't count things like wedding receptions and special dinners for a public interest, where photographs and photographers are expected. It's fairly low on the annoyance list. I've found them easy enough to dodge and I do understand why they do it (insert sound of cash register ringing).

I don't understand how this could possibly work on ships as big as Carnival has. There are photographers at embarkation AND waiting on the gangway in ports AND hanging by the atrium AND by the casino, and probably other places besides. What do they do, take your name and cabin number? Do they take your photograph and pass it around to their buddies so they know not to take your photograph? That would seem to defeat the purpose.

So... how DOES this work? Please enlighten me.

If waiters and stewards know you by the 2nd day and they also serve way more people than you, then I think the photographer will remember when you say I don't want pictures during the week please....

And I'm also not a picture person, but doesn't mean I'm going to call Carnival and complain to get a free cruise..

I tell all photo people to bugger off

There's the rub... any particular photographer will remember your preferences. But how does the photographer in the MDR know what you said to the photographer on the atrium? He doesn't, unless there's some way to track you.

It is annoying. I understand on formal night, but otherwise it gets old. Especially when we're at a two person table and they want one of us to get up for the shot. Last trip they bugged us for three nights and then stopped. Maybe when they switched photographers, the new one realized I'm non-photogenic :)

The pirate ones are stupid.

Also, on the dress code - when you put a water park on your ship and have a "pirate" go around taking pictures, I think you lose the right to pretend this is some formal cruise line of days gone by. Not that I didn't adhere to the dress code, just seemed kinda funny to me.

I agree, annoying. I wave them away, sometimes they move on to another couple or table. Some of them insist on taking a photo, I just pose without a smile, just let that be over with.

As for taking a photo with some costumed freak, we just keep walking. The only mandatory photo is for the key card, this we take seriously.

Doesn't bother me. I simply say "No thank you" and they always move on. Never had a persistent photographer in all of our cruises.

...Perfectly said. I"m on vacation. A simple "Thanks, we'll pass" and away they go. Can't fault these guys, it's their job. In five seconds, the whole horrible ordeal is over, and I'm back to cruising!

There are very few of us who have never bought a picture taken on a cruise ship.

That being said since their job is to try and take a picture of everyone since they don't know who might be interested. If you politely say no, they will be on their way to the next table. If you feel the need to tell someone to bugger off you should think of how you would feel if someone treated you like that at work.

sometimes I let them and sometimes I say no thank you. It's not a big deal for me honestly. I've never purchased one of the photos from dinner either.

Apparently enough people do however as it seems to be worth it to them to pay the photogs to take the pics so there are people who seem to find value in it.

I bring my camera to dinner. It's not a big deal to me.

Chiming in from the old fart division...I swear when we started cruising 15 years ago, the photographers were better. We got some really nice photos that I still enjoy. But on the last few cruises the photos have been no good. I don't suppose it's because I'M getting older? Nope, couldn't be.😃

We normally decline, but on our 50th anniversary we were having photos taken on formal night and when they came into the dining area, we said what the heck.

That was the best photo we had taken. Better than the ones that we had posed for by the screens. We bought it.:D

I hate it when the photographer and his Johnny Depp looking pirate roam around the dining room taking pictures with a knife to your throat while you are eating. Unnecessary.

Hilarious! Thank you for making me laugh.

I don't mind, I like to buy pictures if they're good. Sometimes we say no-I don't want a picture with food stuck between my teeth!

I've been traveling solo since the kids went to college and the photogs annoy the heck out of us trying to enjoy some conversation at a solo table in the MDR. They are always trying to figure out who the couples or newlyweds are to sell us that 'special photo'.

A photographer once told me they are paid by how many pictures they take, not how many are sold.

The pirate is decidedly the worst!! A lot of people must buy those pics or they would have stopped that a while ago.

One I do enjoy, is the rare appearance of the show girl outside the MDR. I like to watch people act foolish getting their picture taken with her, men or women.

For another thread...those annoying jam ups on exiting the ships in port...:o

I don't mind it. Sometimes they are the only pictures we get...the lines for the posed shots are usually ridiculously long, especially on elegant night. I'm on a cruise to relax, if I want to wait on long lines I'll go to a theme park. The dining room photographers will get individual shots, group shots, family shots, shots of the kids together, etc. we travel with a big group so this is the best way to get all the shots we want. The kids, who are teens now, like the costumed characters too, the pirate when they were younger, but now the boys are way more interested in getting a photo with the showgirl.
