I don't take meals back to our room...gross. I like the quiet of the room to enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack. I would be a little cranky if this was no longer allowed. If NCL would take all of the port/ship advertising papers and transform those to paper cookie/snack sleeves at the buffet for passengers to carry back to the room, then there would be fewer dishes left for the hallway. This would be a "convenience" for the pax.

 

 

Love this! The wasted paper makes me nuts in the cabin!!

Yes, occasionally, we bring food back to our cabin.

There is often no place available to sit and we are NOT fans of crowds.

The issue for us is that they are treating passengers as cattle, to be herded as they see fit.

Dumb cattle at that! They added a ridiculous fee for room service and then made a silly 1st graders rule to not bring food from anywhere to our cabin!?

I suspect next they will ban you from bring ANY snacks or food onboard.

 

I honestly can't believe the absurdity of these changes.

Freestyle? please......what a joke that is for sure now!

This is a blatant money grab....period....disturbing to say the least.

We were looking at NCL for our next cruise, but honestly, unless other cruiselines follow this change, (who are also, ie. CCL-doing their own wretched cutbacks, again!) we have no interest in NCL.

It's the principle of the thing.

 

We enjoyed 6 cruises in the last 5 years, but I am unsure about our future in cruising.

And maybe the cruiselines do not give a rip and are busy securing their future by concentrating on new cruisers who have no clue how watered down the cruise product has become.

I just feel sad & will definitely be looking at ALL cruiselines for future cruises (as usual-but more now), sounds like we need to make a spreadsheet to figure who to sail next with so many changes going down at once.

No. We rarely eat in our cabin. When we do it's breakfast. Continental breakfast and coffee delivered by room service is still free. So it won't affect us. I also don't go on a cruise to eat, much less eat in my room. I really don't think it will be an issue for those that need a snack to grab a few cookies or cracker or even cheese back to their room. In my opinion I think the cruise line is trying to cut down on the people that bring huge plates of food back to the room, eat 3 bites then leave the half eaten plates of food out in the hallway (or elevator or stairwell). Much ado about nothing.

What happen's to the " Complements of " platers that get drop of in our cabin Now ???

 

I mean I love my NCL friend's but after all day out to find Canapé's or strawberries / cheese's / from H.D. or guest services in our cabin is a very nice but can be IffY with no idea when they came .

So I can't bring back a piece of fruit or a box of dry cereal or a carton of milk to my little ones, or a cup of coffee or a cup of tea for me or my wife to enjoy on our balcony in the morning?

 

If so this is lame, and it will impact my decision to cancel my upcoming Escape cruise and find some other cruise. To many changes since I booked my cruise for my comfort. This lame policy might be the deal breaker.

 

Why then should I get a balcony? What is actually free from room service in the AM? How long will they take?

 

 

will go to see what other lines will fill in for that cruise that week.

After reading many post on this subject over the last few weeks, it has become quite clear we all cruise for different reasons. Some are really passionate about what makes the cruise special for them and what does not. That's ok, folks, it really is.

 

We cruise for relaxation, convenience of seeing many countries, cities in a week or 10 days. This new policy will not change our mind about NCL, we have the last 6 out of 30 cruises with them. We rarely use room service nor do we take food back to the room on a regular basis. Maybe something from the buffet if we have a fridge and the next day is an early port. I do feel the "What's Next" is valid and a concern, some of the Freestyle is certainly gone.

 

What bothers me most on CC lately is not that we all have opinions but that some posters feel the need to tell others why their opinion is flawed.

We get food from the buffet to eat on the balcony A LOT. We enjoy reading and hanging out and listening to the waves...just booked a 14 day cruise with 6 sea days - 14 days of dining room/buffet breakfasts, dinners and lunches on sea days does NOT appeal. I don't blame them for trying to control mess around the ship, but there should be better ways.

We mainly bring fruit and the new policy is NOT going to stop us, so NCL put that in your pipe and smoke it.

 

We are all adults quit treating us like kindergarten kids.

 

Go after the offenders.

I have brought things like cookies and fruit back, never bigger stuff.I have however,taken stuff back when my daughter suffered sea sicknesses didn't eat for a full day and then felt like something plain, but couldn't face going in public areas at that stage.I'd like to hope common sense would prevail in similar circumstances...

We like to eat breakfast in our cabin on port days instead of fighting the crowd. On our last cruise I wanted some cheesecake from O'Sheehans after spending some time in the casino so we got a couple of slices to go and took it back to the cabin for later. Next year our grandson will be going with us. He'll be 2 at the time so grabbing him a little something from the buffet to hold him over while the rest of us get ready would come in handy.

Before the new and improved room service menu, I would go to the buffet and get a hot plate to augment the morning room service delivery to consume on the balcony while the ship was pulling in port or people watching those getting off if we were already docked. That’s the only time I would eat in the cabin. Otherwise, I would go to the buffet for lunch and dining rooms for dinner. I still plan on continuing to get a hot plate from the buffet and using the complimentary continental breakfast selections (ie, the same breakfast menu they’ve always had). Otherwise this policy does not really impact me. The room service fee for late night affected me but I’ve adapted to it and just go to O’Sheehans for my post-disco snack.

Yes

Usually snacks...small sandwiches...fruit...cheese...chips...dessert...never a whole meal...never leftovers from the dining room.

 

We've never ordered from room service and certainly won't now at $7.95!

 

Agree with others about the treating us like kinders mentality of these recent rules. These kind of things will make me look more critically before booking again.

 

We've sailed NCL about 10 times and have a Greek Islands cruise coming up in July. After that, who knows :(

I can understand all these changes if the base prices would drop, especially on certain itineraries I have been eyeing. The only place where the price war continues is the Caribbean. Otherwise, the prices are up markedly across all the other regions compared to two years ago. With all this a la carte service offerings now the base price should budge.

 

I do not plan on ordering room service besides the continental breakfast and that's only if I have a balcony to eat on. I do not generally eat in the cabin itself. :cool:

Yes, my family at times consumes food in the cabin, for a wide variety of reasons, which are nobody's business but ours and certainly should not require justification to anyone.

 

Yes, I am a bit disgusted by the new policy, because it really takes something important away from me; the freedom to manage my time, privacy, children, etc away from me.

 

Yes I will pay the room service fee when I need to, although we have mostly traveled in suites, and I will also break the rule if I need to to manage my time, privacy, children, in ways that are important to me.

 

Yes, these recent changes have caused me to start checking out the websites of other lines. I will not make a hasty, dramatic decision. But the door has opened a crack.

We are both diabetics and ask for the mini bar emptied soon after embarkation, for storing snacks or leftover food and drink. I am an RN and DH is a former professional cook, so we are well aware of safety issues.

 

After 5 knee operations my sweetie is not always available to push my (rented) wheelchair about the ship for each meal. I sometimes can use my Quad cane, but who knows? We have both searched for seating in the Buffet, and our preference is not to visit there the first couple of days of each cruise, as more likely to contact an illness, statistically speaking.

 

DH will often bring back plates of food for breakfast, and we can usually make it to Blue Lagoon or MDR, sometimes Specialty restaurants for the other meals.

If not, we call Room Service for a sandwich, salad or soup. I am almost positive the hot foods we bring back from the Buffet will be much warmer than anything an hour's wait for 'morning rush' room service could offer. ;)

I ate my plain egg white omelet and the melon, saving my other protein for a late night snack, when my blood sugar dipped rather low.

 

It happens that I suffer from a medical condition often associated with diabetes. It is called gastric paresis, which means you often feel full after only a small amount of food. For example, recently in Moderno. I had a half cup of soup, and very small portion of asparagus/hearts of palm.

We asked the waiter to kindly not bring any filler material, (rice, mashed potatoes, beans or fried banana), and didn't touch the cheese rolls. I was able to manage a small wedge of grilled pineapple, 2 bites of filet and 2 bites of their specialty sirloin.

 

Between us, we ordered 4 lamb chops, and separated out the boneless portion while DH enjoyed the meaty ribs themselves. Neither of us ordered a dessert and I requested that I be able to take the remainder of my 'meal' back to our cabin. The Asst. Maitre D okayed this but the food had to be send via crew member.

If I were not able to have a portion of this $20 (and now with automatic 18% service charge/gratuity), so closer to $24 per person, dinner available to me when I can eat it, that would be a real issue.

 

On our last cruise, we used our UDP 10 times, and I had something from my meal, (first servings, not double portions), brought back 3 or 4 times. Yes, this is not the norm for most pax but as with the buffet breakfast, something that keenly affects the quality of our cruise experience. YMMV.

I can't remember one time ever trying to take food out of a dining venue, except maybe to find a table outside when the interior seating section of the buffet was full. Presumably this will still be allowed?

 

As for purposely filling a plate to take back and eat in our cabin - no, never. That's what room service is for, which we do use with some regularity and have no plans to stop. {{Sigh}} The new fees are just something we'll have to accept and live with, just like we did with pay-per-view in the cabins and for-fee-only access to the steam rooms and saunas on other lines when those charges were implemented. I could expand the list on and on; when we first started cruising back in the dark ages, bridge & galley tours and soft drinks were included...

Going on our first and last NCL cruise this July with 28 friends...I organized the trip. I have diabetes and need something small to eat before retiring with my meds, usually a finger sandwich or piece of fruit. Now I have to call room service..is that before or after I go hypoglycemic.

 

Diabetic also and been cruising for quite a while. Most diabetics I know carry small pre packaged snacks for emergencies. These always work for bedtime snacks. As others have said, if you have a medical issue you need to contact the Accessibility Assistance Desk @

866.584.9756. They will coordinate everything you might need as far as snacks etc. to help with your diabetic needs.

And of course you can have all the fresh fruit you want anywhere on the ship including your room.

We always bring food back to cabin not from Main dining rooms, but from the buffet, especially at breakfast for those who need prodding out of bed on Port days. LOL. (the grown kids)

 

I am not going to let this stuff upset me as I do have awhile before I cruise.

 

But.........I have to laugh to see how they are going to stop you. I don't think they would if everyone just ignores them and you make a fuss.;)

 

Agree that FDR is ridiculous and we should just keep the message boards going with our displeasure.

This is our 1st NCL cruise too. I convinced our group (21 people) to come on this cruise line and this ship (and believe me, it took some convincing!). I'm sure there will be a lot of comparisons of NCL to other cruise lines and this change appears to be a strike against NCL.

 

Personally, I enjoy getting breakfast from the buffet and eating on my balcony. My father does this in his suite with my youngest daughter (it's their "thing"). I know they'll be disappointed. Well, since he's in a Haven, perhaps he can just order room service. :)

I didn't vote because there wasn't a good option for me. While I occasionally bring back food to the cabin (e.g., build my own cheese plate to enjoy with a bottle of wine on the balcony) or to other venues (on the Star we'd get wings from Blue Lagoon and bring them to the bar...which is becoming a non issue with retrofits to O'Sheehans on other ships), it's just not a big deal to me.

 

I understand that it's a big deal to some others though. Takes away from the "freestyle" feel.
