LOUD show volume on Royal Princess

Make sure you bring your ear plugs for the shows on the Royal Princess! I was on the Feb 15 and Feb 22 sailings and all of the shows were so loud that even with ear plugs I had a difficult time staying. There were many shows that I didn’t attend because of the loudness of the shows. The shows in the Princess Theater, Vista lounge, the Plaza and Crooners bar were amplified way above ear damaging levels. I couldn’t even enjoy a coffee and desert at the International café because of the loudness of the music.

I did bring this loudness to the attention to two of the assistant cruise directors, but they didn’t seem to care. I think that the shows are being run by some people that think that louder is better.

I don’t think I will book any cruises on the Royal Princess in the near future. I am hoping that this loud trend isn’t creeping its way through all of Princess.

We've been mentioning that same thing for years now in the surveys and it only seems to have gotten worse. :( ALL the ships that we've been on are similar except for possibly the real small ships.

Princess seems to think that the louder, the better for some reason. Even in the Princess theater before the main show they have the music turned up so loud it's hard to concentrate on reading a book.

I agree the volume of some shows is louder than it needs to be. That issue was diminished for us by sitting as close to the back of the theater as possible. It's difficult to mitigate the loudness in other venues due to their smaller size.

We did not notice the volume being too loud on the Emerald TA last fall.

Good luck with looking for a different cruise line.

The OP did not suggest he was considering leaving Princess.

Everybody is different. I love the current loudness of the Princess shows. I hope they will not change it. And I will continue to enjoy them.

Good luck with looking for a different cruise line.

The sound levels are too high IMO. Carnival is worse!

I have to say I got a sandwich at the International Cafe a couple of times and wanted to sit nearby to eat, but there were dance classes going on that actually hurt my ears. Too loud to carry on a conversation. It's a shame, because it's a lovely area.

That's one bad feature about the Royal and Regal. They've added a beautiful Piazza with lots of seating room & then filled it with deafening music most of the day. The sound even permeates the areas of the upper levels by the Captain Circle host area to the point that we were screaming at one another one day just to be heard. Even ordering a drink at the bar or something at the IC is a challenge with music playing.

i will admit, at times, the sound level is too high in the Princess theater during the production shows, but the music piped in prior to the shows is not.We have no difficulty reading or talking while waiting for the performance to begin.

As for the piazza entertainment, we never had a problem hearing each other during a performance, probably because we watched the performance. There are quiet times in the Piazza interspersed between performances. In other words, we all get what we want at one time or another.

Those that expect instant quiet where ever they go need to sail a library. :)

I am not expecting quiet on the cruise, but I am not expecting ear damaging loudness. Yes, I said ear damaging loudness. I am retired from an industry that used much loud equipment and I know how much loud noise can damage your hearing without ear protection. I have sailed on Princess many times and this noise problem didn’t exist at all about 10 years ago. The sound level has continually increased over the past few years. I have been bringing ear plugs for the shows and they cut the sound to a decent level. This was until these past two cruises. This time even with ear plugs the sound levels were too much. A friend of mine and I both noticed that the sound, at times, was so loud that the speakers couldn’t handle it and the voice and instruments were garbled.

I talked to many people on the ship and they all said that the sound is way too loud.

Those of you who said that they like the high sound levels probably weren’t on these cruises and didn’t hear the levels I am talking about.

I don’t expect quiet on the ship, but I do expect to be able to order a coffee without screaming my order.

Oh, I forgot. There was one woman who said that the sound level wasn’t too loud. She said that she just doesn’t turn on her hearing aids.

Every one has a complaint.

This has been one of my main complaints about cruise ships for years! Sometimes the volume it is so loud it is uncomfortable and I have to leave the venue. I always regret it when I leave my earplugs back in the room, but it's ridiculous that I need to wear them just to go see a show, or stay out on the pool deck when music is being piped in.

I've had this experience on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian. Not on Princess, tho.

There have been comments here about the noise even being too loud in Sabatini's and Crown Grill' date=' on the Royal.

Even those who like loud will surely concede that Sabatini's and Crown Grill are not the venues for loud. Ugh.[/quote']

Neither venue was loud when we ate in the Crown and Sabatinis on the Royal and Regal.

Management is "deaf" to these complaints. They might really be deaf by now. One of the reasons I don't want to go back on the Regal. Their crew is on short contracts, because they lose their hearing in a short time. No, that is sort of a joke, but very sad. I have felt very sorry for those healthy young people.

It's no joke about the crew having to work under those conditions.

If they want a job, take it or leave it.

Same holds true for the people in the smokey casino. I'm thinking they assign those jobs to the smoking crew members rather then force someone to work under those conditions.

The older we all get, the more likely we will begin to lose our hearing. Maybe that will help :p

Oddly enough the older you get the more you're apt to complain about "loud" music!

While I am usually loath to quote the Motor City Madman, he was right...

If the music is too loud, you're too old.

This made me laugh.

Most people go to the library, or out on deck, or to a quiet lounge to read a book. I can't imagine saying to myself, "Think I'll take my book and head to the show."

I haven't been on the Royal or Regal yet, so I can't comment about the volume. A thought though.... The sound people are probably young and have grown up with earphones playing loud music directly into their ears. They may already have hearing problems, so they turn up the volume thinking it is not loud enough. Years of listening to loud music can do damage to your hearing. We've all had cars pass by with the windows closed and the music booming, or being able to hear the music clearly from someone one else's earphones! At times my own house would shake when my son would play music in his room.

We may have been lucky to grow up in the age of records and 8 tracks.
