Advantages to Booking Suites

My wife and I are currently booked . on the MS Nieuw Amsterdam this Oct. We have initially selected a Verandah Cabin. We were wondering what additional services are offered if we upgrade to Suite Level such as Signature Suite. The additional cost would be $1,000/person, and we were wondering if this would be worth it.

 

Please note that this is our first cruise on Holland America.

 

In the past we have usually booked on Celebrity or Princess.

Only you can decide if it is worth the $1000 pp to move from a Verandah cabin to a Signature cabin.

The Signature Suite, as compared to a Vista balcony cabin, will get you a larger cabin (about 50%), and balcony. That's a lot more comfort/space. It will also get you a separate shower as well as the tub w/shower, telephone concierge service, and the few other things previously listed.

 

How long is your cruise? To me, that's a lot of money if it's a short cruise, but may be worth it if the cruise is longer.

For me, unless I could upgrade to a Neptune Suite, it wouldn't be worth it. You really don't get that much extra with a SS besides cabin space.

For our just-booked cruise next March, upgrading was a no-brainer. We qualified for a special casino rate and the price difference between a regular Verandah in the spot we would have chosen and Signature Suite was $65pp....for a 10 day cruise.

 

We jumped on it.

As already mentioned, the main advantage is the much larger cabin. However, you do earn double Mariner Day credit if you book any cabin with"suite" in its name.

 

If your cruise is a long one, the $1000 might be worth it, not sure for just a 7 day though.

I like the Neptune suites, too. But when we've been on Maasdam and Veendam, the price difference between Vista and Neptune was considerable, so we went with the Vista suite. On those ships, the Vista suite is a regular veranda cabin with a bumped-up name to justify the price. But those are smaller ships and there are no regular veranda cabins, so if you want a balcony, you've got to go up to a "suite" of some sort.

The difference with a Signature Suite is the extra SPACE in the cabin and balcony and the double bathroom. (tub and separate shower, and two sinks). As far as "services" there is really no difference between the SS and a regular veranda cabin or "Vista Suite". The SS is much nicer, IMO - and you really do feel that extra room. If it's not too much of a stretch for you, I'd bump up to SS. You WILL be more comfortable.

 

"Vista Suites" are not really suites. It annoys me that they now call these regular veranda cabins 'suites'. Silly, really. I know a lot of people would not agree with me, but I don't like regular veranda cabins. The cabin itself is set too far back from the water and the veranda is so small I don't enjoy it. I LOVE the verandas on the SS and Neptune suites, however. I get an Ocean View cabin when I don't want to spend more for a "real" suite. The entire categories of "Vista Suite" or "veranda cabin" I just don't personally like. Thanks for letting me hijack your thread for that rant! Anyway, all that said, I think you and your wife will be happy that you upgraded to the signature suite. They really are lovely cabins, good size, with big balconies.

"worth the money" is very subjective, and you have to think about what's important to you. If this is Veendam or Maasdam, the Neptune is twice the size of the Vista. We use our balcony a lot, so I would go for it. And since you've got overnights in Bermuda, it would be easy to have room service dinner on the balcony of the NS, if that appeals to you.

:ooops, I stand corrected. They are nice and big though! Our Neptune Suite on Maasdam seemed like another world compared to the Vista 'suites'. And of course it comes with the wonderful crew in the Neptune Lounge... I would grab that upsell in a minute.

Worth the Money!

Having sailed in both types of cabins, I'll take the Neptune for that money any day. In fact, I would be hard-pressed to get DW to settle for anything less than a Neptune after having one our last Med cruise. The interior space and large balcony alone make it worth the cost (IMO).

The king sized bed is a major factor in justifying the upgrade to Neptune for me. I don't take much time off, and want the most out of the time I do take. A week of really good sleep that feels like home; the space to spread out in the room and balcony; the Neptune lounge with excellent coffee and snacks all make it worth it.

If accumulating Mariner Points is important to you, you will need to initially book a cabin with "Suite" in it to get the double Mariner Points. It doesn't work on an upsell going from a Verandah, Oceanview, or Interior. You could try a guarantee "Suite" for less money but selection is a roll of the dice. But if there was an upsell, you could then make the cabin selection yourself.

 

We get to enjoy our first Neptune next week, although I would have been pleased with the location of the Signature that I had originally booked. It was a reasonable combined price that is still below the posted rate.

People are mistaking the "Vista Suites" on the smaller ships (Veendam, etc.) to be the same as Verandahs on the larger ships...so if you say you don't like the Verandah cabins, you may have not been in the same kind of cabin. The Vista Suites have a real couch and a much larger desk area, whereas, on the large ships the plain Verandahs (no "Suite" after them) have a much smaller area.

On the larger ships, the Signature Suites fills a void between the very higher priced Neptune Suites and the Verandahs, but are much larger than a plain verandah or the smaller ships' Verandah Suites.

 

Depending on how port-intensive your cruise is, a Signature Suite will spoil you with its comfort. We have no need for the "perks" that come with anything higher.

It has been awhile since we were on a regular verandah and were thinking they were pretty much the same as Vista suites. Our PCC pointed out the Vistas have considerably more square footage. Nonetheless we are getting an aft verandah for our Southern Caribbean next year. For the most part, we do like Signature suites. The extra space and double sinks help ensure marital harmony.

The Vista Suite on our recent Veendam cruise appeared to be about six feet to eight feet deeper than the verandah cabins on the Vista or Signature ships. The desk was approximately nine feet long with nine drawers. Also a full sized couch.

I am a fan of a the Neptune Suites. It really is a matter of preference whether or not it's worth it. I like the Neptune lounge, and breakfast in the pinnacle grill. We also prefer the aft cabins where you give up a bit of real estate in the room but gain a ton on the balcony. The difficult part is that once you have stayed in the larger suites you are hooked!
