Smoking On Your Balcony But Our Vacation!!

There was indeed a fire on a ship that was due to a cigarette just earlier this year.

It was on Carnival Sunshine the week before I boarded (September 2016).

Someone flicked their lit cigarette overboard (still amazes me someone would do this) and it landed on someone's balcony below and caught a towel on fire.

And just because the Star Princess fire was never publicly declared to be due to a cigarette does not mean a cigarette wasn't the cause.

Sorry but again it was a speculation that the fire was started by a smoker on the balcony or perhaps from a flicked cigarette which landed on a towel left out on a balcony. All one has to do is a internet search on this event and that stands out as it did with the Star Princess fire . There wasn't any proof that this was the actual cause of that fire. ;)

It has never been reported that a cigarette caused the Sunshine fire either, it is merely speculation. It was also reported that the cabin occupants where the fire happened were the ones smoking. So take your pick. I believe this was an aft balcony, so it is just as likely that an ember from the stacks caught a towel on fire that had been left on the balcony.

As for the Star Princess, again, there is a long way between saying, as the official report has said: "we can't find a cause of the fire, so it may have been a cigarette" and a speculative statement that "a cigarette was the cause". I'll take the word of professional maritime accident investigators over the cruising public any day.

A nuisance call? So breaking the rules is just a nuisance??

Sounds like those blocking roads and protesting, just a nuisance so go for it....

I would think that the OP and others with breathing issues wouldn't think it to be a nuisance but an EMERGENCY.

I would think if someone was affected so strongly by the whiff is second hand smoke probably shouldn't be out in the middle of the ocean on some pleasure cruise.

I can't believe someone would say this! You think because someone is effected by second hand smoke they shouldn't cruise? All we ask is that people follow the rules and we ask Royal to enforce those rules and if the person does not comply Royal should enforce the appropriate consequences as described in the policy!

That's just crazy. If I'm paying a premium price for a balcony (or even more for a GS as in the case of the OP), and the cruise line assures me that smoking on balconies is strictly forbidden, why would I not feel assured of a smoke-free environment on my balcony? Why would I not cruise having been given these assurances? Ruin my cruise? Damn straight it would ruin my cruise if I were to get sick from illegal smoking that the cruiseline refused to properly address and you can bet there would be a lawsuit naming the smoker as a John Does defendant in addition to Royal.

I would think if someone was so totally and completely incapable of following simple, widely publicized rules, they shouldn't be out int the middle of the ocean on some pleasure cruise.

Why?? Why?? Why should 80% of the people go to other cruise lines or other vacations so you can pollute our air. Royal is installing scrubbers.... Time to scrub the smokers... Casino Bar first... Balconies are already banned, enforce and remove them from the ship... once the word gets out... it will stop..

I can tell this subject is touchy for you. I agree that if the rules say no smoking on balconies, it should be adhered too and enforced appropriately. The Casino Bar is a valid place to smoke at this time and I hope it remains. I understand that Disney has a strict No-Smoking rule. If it really bothers some, then possibly give them a try....does anyone know about Disney's smoking policy?

Really, big difference between atmospheres between Royal and Disney, not to mention lots of kids.... I had my own but now it is time for us to live.

Trust me, soon, the Casino Bars on Royal will be smoke free. Sitting at the bar drinking and smoking, and NOT PLAYING, IS NOTHING MORE THAN A SMOKERS LOUNGE.

So, you think it is ok to not play and use the Casino as a smoking area???

Biggest difference is that Disney doesn't have casinos so no smoking there!

That has to be the dumbest statement since someone asked why a person who was blind would want to cruise.

We have gone on 16 cruises with no problems. The last cruise before this problem one was in Aug/Sept. We were gone for over 3 weeks with no issues.

This is the first cruise where we have had problems with smokers and problems with my partners breathing. We have another cruise booked in March with RCI. If there are problems again we will most likely switch to a non-smoking line.

I don't see a problem with it, and it would be difficult to police. Most times that I'm in the casino, smokers are gambling. You may find one or 2 at the bar, but that doesn't mean that they have been there the whole time...could be a break. I hope they don't close all the casino bars, but I wouldn't mind them having a ship or 2 that would be completely smoke free....I wouldn't use that ship and non-smokers could...problem solved.

If the fire was caused by someone throwing a lit cigarette on to towels on a balcony below then there are two people at fault. The cigarette thrower and the person who left the towel on the balcony. Both are against the rules you know!

And what cruise line is totally non-smoking? The last one I heard of was one named Renaissance or something like that. They went bankrupt.

Contact Michael Bailey's office, we had the same situation on our cruise last year. We were in an aft balcony and our neighbors smoked the whole time. We reported it time after time to no avail. We finally e- mailed his office and got a very nice resolution.

Perhaps by Day 3 an email to Bailey's Office is warranted? Your Mid-cruise, perhaps they could get the message from Above and get more action happening?

Indy was not the best for 'smoking action taken' on the many times we were on last year. We had smokers on most of them I think. They were more obedient though, than this one on this Thread!!

Any cruise out of Australia, for one example.

Really? So the following article from Cruise Critic is out of date? I could find nowhere where it says all cruise ships leaving Australia are smoke free.

That's what I get for posting from my phone while on a cruise. I misspoke. (mistyped? ;) )

No INDOOR smoking on Australia-based cruises. So the casino is smoke-free, as well as cabins and balconies, on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

If I STILL don't have it quite correct, I am sure that one of my Aussie friends will leap in. :)

This got me wondering. I didn't remember my voyager cruises being completely smoke free a couple of years ago, although that may have changed. I did feel that the smoking in the casino was far worse in the last couple of cruises I had done elsewhere (from Southampton and from Seattle).

I logged into the RCI Australian site and found this

http://www.royalcaribbean.com.au/vanity/australiaterms

Regarding smoking it says:

"19. Smoking policy

...

All indoor public spaces are smoke free, with the exception of the Casino, the Connoisseur Club on Freedom and Voyager Class ships, and one designated smoking venue on ships sailing from Chinese homeports. In the Casino, there will be designated smoking and non-smoking areas.

Additionally, smoking will not be permitted in staterooms or on stateroom balconies. Outdoor smoking areas will be designated on the starboard side of all ships; with the exception of Oasis-class ships that will allow smoking on the port side of the ships. Guests in violation of the stateroom and balcony smoking policy may be charged a US$250 stateroom cleaning fee. Indoor smoking areas allow tobacco cigarettes and electronic cigarettes. Cigars and pipe tobacco can be enjoyed in designated outdoor areas, or in the cigar club on the ships that offer this venue.

Please note that the above policy is subject to revision in order to comply with current applicable health legislation, where countries have local smoking regulations. This may mean that smoking is prohibited except in designated outdoor areas or when arriving/departing certain ports."

I am not sure if it is due to our health legislation or the combination of fewer Australians smoking (apparently 13.3%) plus the availability of the Connoisseur Club cuts down the number of smokers in the casino? Plus the general reaction of aussie non-smokers who know their rights :)

It would be very interesting to know.
