Smoke free casino experiment

I may have a solution. If the cruise line will have 2 casinos on ship. 1 non smoking and the other smoking. Everyone will be happy. :)

Just out of curiosity, if you only sail Celebrity and Cunard, why do you hang around Royal Caribbean threads?

In November of 1999, we had the pleasure of taking a totally non smoking Carnival Paradise for a Caribbean cruise. In a short period of time, they switched back to smoking, which Paradise is now.

 

 

 

If you check, after five or six years of negative revenue, Carnival switched (or caved in, depends on your point of view) and allowed smoking on Paradise. Apparently the non-smoking guests weren't spending as much as the smokers.

 

Not my opinion, just something easy to research.

I agree. However, I think a lot has changed in the 10-15 (?) years.

 

There are a lot of good points that have been made on this thread about the impact on the bottom line. I can think of only two reasons why RCI would be running the trial. Either, they want more information on the impact on the bottom line or they already know and are softening people up to the idea (i.e. part of the communications campaign).

They did a 3 week experiment on the Majesty by restricting smoking in the casino. It didn't go well. Revenue dropped significantly. It was like a ghost town. They reverted back to the way it was, it was packed every night, and the revenue increased. Imagine that.

 

Do you know if it was advertised that there would be no smoking in the casinos? Maybe the nonsmokers who would have gone in if they were aware of it didn't know that it was now nonsmoking.

Per person or as a whole? I would highly doubt that the 15% of smokers spent more as a whole than the 85% of non-smokers. I thought the Paradise was only smoke free for a short period of time.

 

Negative revenue would imply that lost money on each cruise which I also find hard to believe.

When the Paradise experiment was conducted the percentage of smokers was higher and even when smoking is allowed in the casino some non-smokers will still use the casino. I would use the casino after I became a non-smoker until I lost part of a lung this year, now I won't if smoking is allowed.

You don't know what the non smoking guests were spending compared to smokers.

 

Having only one ship non smoking was bound not to last as it sailed the same itinerary every week. Also complete non smoking back then and even now was wrong. It means draconian enforcement required by the crew. Giving the small number of smokers a place to smoke alleviates that. Some smoking areas should have been provided on outside decks. When groups or families book that increases the odds that someone in the group might smoke. Banning all inside smoking including the casino with some outside smoking areas does work. We have a cruise line with its whole fleet having no indoor smoking including no smoking in the casino for years now.

Hard to say since I haven't seen anyone with cigars. I wish they had not taken it away so that the smokers still had another indoor smoking room!

 

i think your lucky to have the outdoor area. If it were me, no smoking at all would be allowed on Ships or public areas/events.

 

But first I am going after smoking at the Casino Bar and not playing. After that battle is won, will move for a smoke free Casino. Smokers, those using the Casino as a indoor smoking room are ruining it for you.

They can read and post on any thread they please. That is their business, not yours. Just because they cruise on certain lines does not mean they should not be interested in other cruise lines. And they might view all CC posts. My forum reader allows me to choose the complete Cruise Critic feed to view or to narrow it down and subscribe to specific forums or threads.

Bottom line is the cruise line will do what makes them the most money. You can all talk and judge and complain all you want. The cruise line will do what makes them the most money. They are a business. They are not your family or your friends. They are a business. Money makes the decisions. And don't bother guessing what would make them more money. RCI knows what they are doing. They do studies. They don't walk through once in a while and look around at who is in the casino and who is gambling.

There needs to be an outside area. Otherwise the addicts will be sneaking smokes in smoking areas. Having some outside areas makes non smoking easier to enforce. It is also fair until the smoking rate falls below 5% of the population.

I wish they would do something like that.

At least one bunch wouldn't be happy, the employees forced to work the smoking side.

 

Not serious, but what if:

Throw up a glass wall and split the existing casinos right down the middle. Ensure separate ventilation systems. Move the wall one way or the other every couple of years depending which side justifies more real estate. About a pure experiment as you can have, although I realize not realistic.

 

 

Remember the glass smoking rooms they had in airports a few years ago - do they even have those anymore? You'd walk by and sometimes the visibility was so bad you couldn't see the back wall from the door due to the cloud.

I just realized my Avatar includes a pipe as I'm posting on a smoking thread.

 

I don't smoke, not even a pipe. Last pipe was when I was 10 years old dressed up like Popeye for Halloween.

 

I did spend my late teens in a pool hall back in the early 90s where the smoke was so bad you literally could not see across the room some nights. Hours of that almost every day for a few years. I have never smoked, but I wonder what I did to my lungs in those years. Don't tell me, nothing I can do now.

 

Anyone that wants to smoke, smoke, and there should be a place for it, including at least one indoors. But second hand smoke is nasty. Its not fair to offer a feature (casino) that is not free of second hand smoke.
