Carnival Glory Drydock Update

I don't understand why they don't have longer dry docks. If they know it will take longer than two weeks, why do they still have two week dry docks? Wouldn't it make more sense to have a longer dry dock instead of ruining people's vacations and losing customers?

Money.

Every day the ship doesn't have passengers on it they lose money. If the rooms and all other amenities are available it is worth it for them to sail and give out 25 OBC (for example) to those who complain.

It wouldn't have ruined our cruise but if I'd walked on Glory last summer to that look on lido I would have been disappointed. It just doesn't look pretty. They should have taken a longer dry dock if it will take longer for upgrades to be done.

They don't want to lose money. I bet you they wouldn't close down the casino for 4 weeks+ as they are doing with the slide. The casino is where the money is made. Slides are free.

This isn't entirely accurate. While revenue certainly is a concern, generally the time allowed in dry dock depends on scheduling with the dry dock itself. Work takes place at the Grand Bahama Shipyard where many cruise lines have their ships dry docked. They are limited in space, resources and manpower to complete the work.

I think you're correct. The time in the drydock itself is intended to work on the ship's hull, engines and safety features - things for which the ship has to be out of the water. The ship doesn't need to be in the drydock to do things like waterslides. My Navy son's ship was in drydock for several weeks recently to do extensive hull and engine work, and then she was re-floated. However, she won't sail for another month as they do work that doesn't require a drydock.

Having said that, I'd be very unhappy if I booked a cruise and ended up with a Lido deck that was blocked off forward as appears from that Glory photo. This is President's Week, and a lot of families will be on board.

That makes more sense than a money issue to me. Thank you, I was wondering!

I asked John Heald about this today. Here's his response:

"Yes, the work will be completed during the forthcoming drydock the ship will receive the wonderful and exciting waterworks. These three slides will add huge excitement and fun to the ship. Construction has already started which means unfortunately the current waterslide and forward pool are out of commission. However all the other pools , food services, Guys etc and all of the hotel services and entertainment and deck parties are in full operation and I'm sure you will continue to have a brilliant time. Thank you for your understanding and please let me know if you have any further questions."

Note: He didn't answer my question as to why the Carnival website says it will be completed after dry dock.

Got off the boat today. In addition to the slide being disassembled while we were cruising, 2 of the 6 main hot tubs were broken and the steam room in the fitness center broke at some point on day 5.

I wish we'd been notified about the slide, I could have altered excursion plans to get some slides in.

We too got off the Glory on Saturday. Never heard anything about the waterslide being cut into scrap. Disappointed boys in our group, but did not ruin the cruise. Biggest problem I encountered was our cabin (Deck 2 AFT). It sounded like we were in the space shuttle or as we renamed it "The Thunder Dome".

Went to Guest Services to politely complain and the person helping me acted like she never heard of this before and kind of brushed us off like we were crazy. (she did make a note of it though). I went back to our room and shot a quick video of it sounds like a Harley idling and you can see the water in the water bottles shaking.

Back to Guest services got a new lady who did not want to see the video as she told me they get complaints EVERY week on this issue. They did compensate us and the couple next door and moved the couple after them to a better room. (only one room was open).

They also said as of two weeks ago no more OBC, for problems it has to be On board Experiences. They kept pushing the spa but we declined. Here is a breakdown of the compensation.

$300 in On Board Experiences. Here is what we received.

Complimentary Bath robe to keep

Dinner for 2 at the Steakhouse

and they credited us all of our alcohol on our sail and sign. :)

We still were in the green $20.63 at end but was non refundable so we will not see that.

New Carnival Waterworks

  • In preparation for the new Waterworks, the forward pool, whirlpool and water slide are currently out of service now through March 25. Waterworks will be completed post dry dock. Please note, this is the forward pool and whirlpool on deck 10 and will not affect food service or deck parties that are on Lido deck 9. While under construction, the mid ship pool, aft pool and whirlpools are open for guest use. Also, our Camp Ocean program for kids will be in full swing for kids to enjoy.

So even if John Heald says it's not so, sounds like work will continue after dry dock.

That's not the Glory, That's a Fantasy class ship.

You can see the davits for the life boats above lido deck.

That's also a Fantasy shape pool

great try I would have loved to have seen a live version

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure since it had the label for the glory on it. It seemed like a lot of work to have gotten done that fast. Will have to keep looking I guess. Thanks again.

I think anyone who booked this cruise during this "pre drydock demolition" without any notice about it before booking would be pretty angry. I know I would. I think Carnival really failed here and Im sure if any of you wanted to get a full refund because of this, you probably could. Or maybe offer you some sort of discount...I mean this is just total BS in my opinion. I know I would probably call and tell them to cancel me and expect a full refund or demand half of my cruise fare back. You expected to be able to use ALL the amenities on the ship. Not just half of them. This is just Carnival being cheap. This should have ALL been planned DURING dry dock. Very unprofessional of them to do this during cruises people paid good money for.

Well, I asked John Heald during his live stream today if water works would be operational on 3/11 or if construction would continue and all he said was he "will keep everyone posted in the coming days." I was hoping to ease some minds get a few people to put down their pitchforks. Oh well

Thanks for the Try, That's a little different than he posted before saying it would be done by the end of dry dock?

it means nobody knows, all depends on how things go, how much they get done due to weather, all the parts showed up, fit together and if there's parts left over. This is also the first Conquest ship to get waterworks. First time they are installing this on this class of ship. I know all you contractors out there know projects never go perfectly or smoothly.

Just gotta wait and see how much they get done. its a big project to complete in only 2 weeks.

Ok so now im getting nervous. I was not told anything about this when I booked the Glory. We sail May 27th... Do you all think that the construction will be done by then? I am taking small children and the waterworks was the big selling point for us.
