Have your thoughts changed on Europe since the Manchester bombing?

Ironically, hubby and I have been debating our 25th and if we would feel safe flying out to the USA.

On reflection, the answer is that we would be cautious, but that we would go.

Thanks to those on here from the US for their words of support and refusals to change plans at this moment in time :)

There are times when we all need to stand together.

I pray more.

For those who lost their lives; for those whose life will never be the same as a result of their experiences and losses; for those whose life is so distorted by hate that they fail to see the good in others. For all of us.

But I will continue to live my life and enjoy the blessings I have been given.

We went through this last year after the Paris and Brussels bombings. We were booked on the Silhouette from Amsterdam to Rome in September. A wonderful 12 night trip. We had planned to go with two other couples. After much thought and discussion between DW and myself we decided to make the trip and not let the evil people in the world stop us. Yes, we went with a bit more caution, a bit more aware of our surroundings but we had a great time. Of the other two couples, one cancelled and regretted it, the other was about to cancel and decided at the last minute to join us. There must have been a fair number of cancellations because about 3 weeks after our final payment there was a huge price drop --the ship was sold out at one point before the attacks--so we got a nice upgrade to Aqua. Oh, the other factor in our personal decision, I was walking through the casino at Cesar's Palace and I found a 20 euro note on the floor....I took that as sign that we should make the trip. That note is going with us to Venice this September...There are crazy, evil people everywhere in this world and while I will not walk into a war zone, I am not ready to let them stop me.

I'll still be traveling, too, but I always cringe at comments of the sort "I'm more in danger being hit by a drunk driver".

The car being driven by a drunk driver is not a weapon that was carefully planned specifically to kill and maim as many innocent bystanders as possible, all in the name of some ideology.

No, the car is driven by a craven person who has no regard for the safety of anyone around him.

I live in New York City. It takes a lot to scare me.

I'm originally from the States, and I lived in NYC. Now I live in Israel. I have no use for bravado. I know what an act of terror is, and what is not an act of terror. To set aside that distinction is to accept terror as a standard part of our lives. That is the true giving in to terror, the true allowing of terrorists to win. No accident, or selfish act, is comparable to an act of terror.

I've been gay-bashed twice in my life. Smaller scale, perhaps, and I escaped with bumps and bruises, but if I didn't go for the bravado, I might never leave my house.

You see it your way, I see it mine.

My meaning/intent is not getting through. I can assure you I leave my house, travel within and out of the country.

Read Kay Wilson; info in my first post in this thread.

We sailed on Reflection 4/22, traveled to Prague and Vienna upon disembarking and are looking forward to Venice, Siena and Rome before we do the reverse TA in October. These horrific incidents do give us pause, however we are not cancelling/changing our European travels.

Following the horrific Manchester bombing, have you changed your mind on travelling/cruising in Europe?

Actually, it makes me worry more at home or anywhere else I might be.

The Manchester incident occurred as people were exiting the venue, not inside during the event itself.

All the security in the world when entering a venue does not prevent terrorism when the event is over and thousands of people exit into a non-secure area. This can happen after any ball game, concert, or other big public event.

Manchester is our nearest large city....it is wonderfully culturally diverse, open and tolerant in its attitudes. We feel blessed to have enjoyed it's heritage, culture and genuine hospitality all our lives...

On our first visit to New York we finished our home video panning a shot from the ground up the twin towers into the clouds enveloping the top. We decided to go up 'next time' we visited as the weather was not good....little did we know next time we visited the towers would be no more.....

We listen to government advice on where it is not safe to travel. We research safe/unsafe areas of cities we visit, try to remain alert to all dangers (from terrorism to pickpocketing). To become over cautious, however, simply means you miss opportunities to enrich your life....

Rust out at home or wear out enjoying all life has to offer...

We all have to stand together, be kind & tolerant no matter what colour, religion or sexuality & that way terrorism can never win xx

This.

Boston salutes Manchester. We have sort of walked in your shoes.

Nope. You must fight evil. Never accept it as a normal part of life, and never make excuses for it. This is THE case when even a gazillion 'kumbayas' will not do the trick.

"Love does not conquer hate: If it did, the only casualty in Manchester would have been Abedi himself. To seek to overcome terrorism by pledging ... to move on from it, mainly succeeds in tempting its return.

..

What conquers hate is the only defensible form of hate: hatred of evil."

Having been in Manchester arena a couple of nights before this happened I'm certainly not going to let this stop me travelling. We were in instanbul when there was trouble and the ship left a day early. An MP was murdered by my work last year and we'd to lock people in for safety after sheltering and caring for witnesses. Did I take time to think about my future, oh yes but did I decide to stop going to concerts, travelling etc, no because anything could happen anywhere at anytime and I'm going to enjoy my one and only life.
