I heard there are "Planters" in there....any truth to this?

I don't know for certain, but every other auction has "plants". Can't really believe that there are that many people who go on cruises to buy art work. But I have been wrong before.

We have gone just to look at the art work. Then we found out the have a gallery and we didn't need to go to the auction. It took us a few cruises to figure this out. In October we got a free piece of art for staying in a suite. We got an envelope with a paper inviting us to pick out our free artwork valued at $200. We thought it was a ploy and ignored it. Then they called us on the last sea day to make sure we go the invite and then to see why we hadn't come down.

I think they're kinda fun. Never bought anything, but some of the art is really pretty good. Some trash. We cruised with a couple from NOLA who were replacing all of their home furnishings after Katrina. They bought several nice pieces. To each his own.

It kinda cool to hear the stories about the artists and the patter of the auctioneer. Most of what they offer is machine prints of well known works. Lesser known artists are featured as well, but not original works, like oil, water color, or sculpture. Generally there is gallery walk through prior to the auction, and staff will place pieces up for auction for people who ask. My experience is the requester is the only bidder. I have attended hundreds of auctions, and know a shill when I hear one. I did not hear any on the ship's auctions.

I also got the $200 coupon but did not use it. My collecting favors original animation art, usually cels from ink & paint with or without background. I am not a fan of sericels (machine printed silk screen cels) I did not see anything I would hang anywhere near that price. There was no animation art at all.

There were some items priced up to ten grand from people like Max and Warhol, but no one took the bait.

If you have any interest in art or merchandising of art, it is certainly worth your time on a sea day.

I enjoy the art auctions. We have bought art, but not through the auction, in the gallery, after the auction. I used casino winnings so I figure they were basically free, but I still love the art.
