Bayonne no longer home port for Summit???

I don't recall the M-Class ships homeported there, but I do remember the Century class Galaxy sailing from Balto.

We took Zenith our of Baltimore the year of the "shooter".

Yes it will, if the Millie was station there, they are the same size ship with different names, it can fit under the bridge.

Just curious. When did Millennium sail out of Baltimore and what was the itinerary?

What do you think they are doing with Anthem. Cruises in December (other than Holidays) and January are dirt cheap. It's the nature of the beast. It's really only 2 months out of the year. My March 2012 cruise on Silhouette in an inside cabin for 2 people was $2,757.06. For this past January 2017 on Anthem, 12 nights balcony cabin on deck 12 was $2,245.42. Plus a 5 year difference.

Plus the Anthem was deliberately built to be a cold weather ship. Of course you cannot use the main pool for the first day or two, but you have the other two enclosed pools...plus there are many more "inside" activities than any other ship I have been on.

When Celebrity brought Silhouette to NJ - they couldn't fill the ship for winter Caribbean itineraries. Prices were " give away". For 12 days in December we had AQ for $1200/pp, insides were around $800. I don't think they will repeat that lesson.

Probably true,"...for winter Caribbean itineraries." At least not for a continuous series of cruises from one year into the next. OVERKILL...

We were on that cruise on the February 10, 2012 sailing. I find it hard to imagine that it was not to capacity or at least very close to full capacity. I don't recall what we paid but it for sure was no giveaway. The dining room at the early sitting was completely filled to the absolute max. Shows were always to capacity ans SRO. Once the weather was warmer, I think it was the second day at sea the lawn club was booked solid and I know for a fact the Casino was busy EVERY night.

I am sure that if a cruise with this itinerary was scheduled for a one or two time event and programmed for the time just before the Bermuda season, late March or Early April, it would NOT be that hard to sell, schedule or provision. Granted, try to sell it over and over again and it suffers from over kill as will almost any cruise. Look at the deep discounts you can get on cruises out of Florida.

As far as the grass on the Sillie, a few days under plastice didn't seem to bother it, and my lawn goes through rough winters each year, sometimes staying green the whole time.. LOL

We will never know, since it will probably never happen..

Also, Bayonne bridge is not closed every weekend.

True, my comment was in response to the poster who said bridge is open and construction is completed. Not true.

Bridge is open this weekend, labor day traffic. Bridge is open if bad weather precludes construction.

Google maps knows if Bridge is closed. Port Authority website also has information.

IF Celebrity decide to leave Bayonne it will not be until 2019. I could see Lisa wanting to move to the Manhattan terminals to be able to more easily offer air/hotel package options that better fit with their brand positioning and to maybe capture a broader demographic then they currently are getting. I know MANY clients I work with who live on Long Island who refuse to cruise from Bayonne (The same can be said for folks from NJ preferring Bayonne over Manhattan to a lesser extent). Cruising from Manhattan puts them more in the "center" of things, with easy access to Manhattan hotels and all three airports. Personally I'd love to see a Solstice Class based from NYC year-round again, or even an Edge Class ship!

Anyone who has experienced both the Bayonne port and the New York port knows there is no comparison. The NY port is a nightmare for both embarkation and disembarkation. Enough so to undo any stress relief achieved during vacation.

I have no desire whatever to ever sail out of NYC again, if I can avoid it.

Agree..,Royalization downgrade is almost complete,...Sad but done!

After our Summit cruise to Bernuda a few yrs ago, we found her to be sagging and dated...flies hatching aling the windows in the upstairs nightclub just one example of poor upkeep back then. After our Oct Infinity cruise,..no more M class ships in our future plans..

We were lucky to enjoy a Silhouette sailing RT to Carib from Bayonne when she first came out..,it was a bit rough and chilly first 2 days.,snow covered the cars when we returned to port, Have not sailed from Bayonne since the port upgrade,.....sounds much better

We'd probably try Adventure of Seas out of Bayonne for a family (kids etc) cruise if that ship goes in there...Perfect size!

I agree with your conclusion but your facts.... Bayonne Bridge is closed weekends for construction

Suggested route is LIE-BQE-Mamhattan Bridge - Holland Tunnel.

In general travel time from Long Island to Cape Liberty is similar to Manhattan cruise port.

Big difference is for pax who want to use mass transit. LIRR then taxi gets you to Manhattan port

No easy way from LI to Cape Liberty

From Suffolk Co LI, limo companies will go just about anywhere but dislike Bayonne from our experience,, Did great with limo when X was in Manhattan and with Cunard in Brooklyn....Driving the Belt Pwy is torture.vNot much better thru Manhattan.Guess it's all wait and see anyhow...

Their parent company pulled out of NYC in 2004 or 2005, after NYC said they would not make improvements to the NY City terminals. They put all their money into Bayonne (Cape Liberty). Heck the terminal they built and parking garage is brand new. Why would Celebrity NOT want to use this?

Hopefully they are just thinking about switching ships. Summit has been there since 2011. Prior to that is was Constellation.

Corporations do weird investments. I worked for a auto company. One that went bankrupt and was bailed out.

They installed a whole manufacting line worth millions. Ran it for one hour and then shut it down and tore it out. Said they wanted to see if it worked.

A plant I worked at bought out a lot of residents and businesses for their property to expand. They invested millions and a few years they shut the plant down and relocated to a new plant. They demolished everything and it is now a huge vacant area.

Build a huge Super Kmart store near us and shut it down a few years later.

Built a Bagger Dave's by us. It was open about a year or so. Place was jammed packed after opening. It went out of business and now for lease.

If the market isn't there why keep spending money on a bad or poor investment. It is like gambling. Quit losing money when the odds are stacked against you. Just accept your losses and invest the money in a area that will give more return.

It isn't Celebrity's obligation to provide cruises to Bermuda or convienant cruises to the people on the east coast. I like sailing out of Bayonne as it is only a 10 hour drive but canceled my 14 day cruise that sails in Sept because it is too expensive compared to some of the cruises that I have booked sailing out of Fl.

Happy cruising 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌞

Pricing for Summit has always been strong, especially the fall Canadian cruises. Cheapest balcony cabin on her Bermuda sailings next July run around $240/night vs $200 for Anthems Bermuda itineraries. Where could X more profitably reposition her? If Summit leaves NJ fully expect her to be replaced by S class.

Over the next five years the major cruise lines have over 50 new ships scheduled for delivery Where are they going to put them all, especially during winter? Many will go to Asia, but with Florida nearing saturation expect quite a few will homeport on US East and West coasts. NY / NJ is an attractive market and will get its fair share.

Have sailed from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Bayonne. Bayonne is the easiest to drive to, no comparison. Bayonne bridge construction is a temporary minor inconvenience. Taking the Goethals only adds 5-10 minutes to trip. Brooklyn and Manhattan are doable on weekends but an absolute nightmare mid-week.

Would love a cruise that does the itin that Royal C's Grandeur does sometimes from Baltimore, A RT, Coastal to Savannah, Charleston, space center, miami, nassau... That ship is old,,,,and the sailings often in cold months...but we'd love those ports. American Cruise line has a similar itin but VERY pricey,,

, Balto is a short flight from Long Island,..

The limo company has zero chance of a return fare from the port. All but zero from EWR. It may take 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get to Bayonne. Could take 3 hours to drive back

You're being basically being charged for 5 hours not a point to point rate. Anything under $500 is sort of fair to the limo company but more then I'd spend. Driving makes theist sense.

Royal offers, or used to offer motor coach. Don't remember price. It had a handful of pick up locations. Park n Ride lots off the lie. Decent option of you don't drive

When the boss says that there are other plans for Summit it could also mean that if the traffic warrants it, an S-class ship makes Bayonne home or to really impress the NY market, dare one dream, ..........

On a slow day, when I could have been cruising, I'm at home speculating..

Equinox was taken out of Europe due to a softening market..

Eclipse was moved to South America.. perhaps replacing Infinity's itinerary..

Edge will be going somewhere...

I'm still planning on Summit for next year..... but when "Lisa" says she has plans for Summit, a change is bound to take place. eventually

S-class to Bayonne and the Summit starts Celebrity's first "World Cruise"? We can only hope!

Enjoy!

You are right about the Bayonne Bridge. I thought I had read that the construction was completed. Seems there are still intermittent closings. Travel time to both may be similar, but the West side pier is a zoo!

The first 3 weeks of December sailings generallyare the lowest price sailings of the year due to the upcoming holidays. First week in January is also cheap. I remember tracking fares on Silhouette that winter, & they stayed pretty strong, even after final payment.

Whatever they decide I hope they decide in favor of something more than that ship's entire itinerary being either Bermuda or Leaf Peeping. People in the New York area don't need a cruise to see leaves changing color. LOL.

How about one or two longer ( 12-14 day ) cruises, let's say to the Caribbean, thrown in before the ship that is ported in Jersey begins its non-stop series of 7 day cruises to Bermuda.

We took a cruise out of Bayonne on Anthem last December that was 12 nights to/from the Caribbean. It was quite nice and it is part of Anthem's "routine" set of itineraries. Celebrity could do the same with one of their ships. The issue to consider is simply there are only three types of 1 to 2 week itineraries possible from Bayonne: North (Canada/NE), East (Bermuda), or South (Bahamas/Caribbean). Other than trans-Atlantic/repositioning.

Wow... surprised at the drive-time tolerance some are able to endure!

Four hours is about our limit. Give me the 30 minute drive to DTW and a hop over to EWR over a ten hour drive.

Either way, we'd be joining a cruise, so there is that! ;)

A few years back, Celebrity sent one of their ships into drydock to have work done, spent a few million and then announced she was either sold or transferred to another line. As you stated corporations do weird things.
